20,000 iPhone Widgets

August 2, 2007

maheshee11Plusmo, the free mobile widget service, has been optimized for the iPhone. There are now 20,000 Plusmo widgets available with a custom interface for Apple’s phone.[...] Thanks to maheshee11 for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 479Diggs).

What other users say about this:

artabn: They don’t even have over 200 or 50 available. They are no where near 20,000. Misleading. Misdirect.

osage: com1 – BURRIED

etx313: Shit is weak. Wizeeeak!

shibbay: So this site archives blogs in widget form? These aren’t really “apps”…

maheshee11: The best comment on the story, imacashew. Thanks, buddy.

If (article.description.contains(“iPhone”))

dtpollitt: I hate the New York Mets

vvaduva: The site is crawling on the iphone…AND on my laptop. They are having traffic issues and it’s basically unusable

LaSepultura: Do any of these Widgets add a video camera, GPS, or 3G?

MetalHaze: www.appleopolis.com is better…..plusmo sucks in comparison….

imacashew: JESUS….what’s with digg’s logic for putting shit on the front page? this article only has 89 diggs and 6 comments. I’m imagining something like this:

If (article.description.contains(“iPhone”))
{
frontPage = true;
}
else if ((article.diggs > 200) && (article.comments > 50) && (article.reads > 2000))

Apple Releases iTunes 7.3.2

August 2, 2007

OneManArmyApple has released iTunes 7.3.2 for both Windows and Mac. The description briefly states that “iTunes 7.3.2 provides bug fixes to improve stability and performance.”…[...] Thanks to OneManArmy for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 24Diggs).

What other users say about this:

MowMyMound: Enough is enough! Stop with the updates! I think that befoer you release the next update or next line of products, you should simply get it right the first time! I have downloaded itunes more than I’d like to think about, and it’s truly a pain in the ass. I could understand if itunes was making a major modification, but sadly, I can not spare $600 for a shiny new iPhone.

I bought the 60g video ipod about 3 months after it was released thinking, “Yea, this shouldn’t be out of date too soon.” Then about 2 months later the 80g ipod comes out! I’m simply fed up with the changes. I can’t find myself investing in any new apple products simply because the price and pace is too fast.

And if anyone knocks me for that, just loan me the cash, and I’ll get the new iphone or imac.

Sorry, I’m grumpy and I’ve got to go to work.

Danny

skemez1: Here is a direct link for the mac version:

mlavergn: Changes that might be new:

New menu item: File -> Transfer Purchases from iPhone
iPhone has a new Info:Advanced tab section

Other than those, I didn’t see anything else different.

Apple denies $2000

August 2, 2007

macman64Apple is not dealing with $2000 that has gone “missing”[...] Thanks to macman64 for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1701Diggs).

What other users say about this:

postalblowfish7: it’s a fake!

chheber: This must be fake.
Doesn’t an _American_ 22 year old collage student know English?

He constantly type “I” with lower case. He does this even though he starts sentences (mostly) with a capital letter.

MauiMac: $1,957.45 does not = $2,000.

This person needs to go back to grade school…

gracias: SCAMMER / TROLL: Look at some of his other posts on macrumors late last year, (poolin1243, same location)

“Ive gone through 3 macbooks in the 4-5 WEEKS since i bought the original one. Every Time it was something else! A clicking screen when opening and closing, a bad left speaker, Discoloration of the BLACK casing. NOWW i need a FOURTH macbook, because this 3rd one is having a static (white noise like a TV) all the time! Its rediculous how many problems im having. What to do???? What to do????? What numbers can i call to bitch and moan about this, and get some vindication etc from apple?????? What to do?”

READ MORE OF HIS POST HERE: http://forums.macrumors.com/search.php?searchid=6884557

What a liar.

AcesFullMoon: I’m completely amazed at the complete lack of common sense displayed by most of the people responding to this story. Before posting I recommend reading his blog, then looking at the clarifying comments made on here since then. When you’re lazy and you just post a response without gathering all the information, you look very stupid. Obviously, poolin1243 exaggerated the direness of his situation, but in his situation, who wouldn’t?? Actually, it’s not “obvious” because it is plausible that his class, a graphics design class for those of not keeping up, would require a Mac laptop. However, as someone just pointed out, he stated that he needs to buy a Mac Pro, so unless he made a typo, he needs to purchase a new desktop computer, which doesn’t make alot sense. So, I agree that parts of the story don’t make perfect sense.

However, people looking to punch holes in it at every turn need to think their arguments through a bit more. He doesn’t have a receipt because his parents weren’t really thinking and didn’t keep it; I would personally be shocked if parents could put their hands on a receipt for anything they’ve ever purchased. Not real bright, but not atall uncommon. For people asking how he already has CS3, he stated he got it from an internship. I think it likely he already has a computer, but needs/wants a new one. It is also conceivable that he simply has the software on CD and no computer to run it. If he got CS3 from his internship, how is that far-fetched? As far as needing to turn the matter over to police…are you serious?? I don’t know how on the ball your local police are, but I don’t see the police from my hometown getting to the bottom of something like this. Obviously, his strategy of posting his story on Digg has been highly successful; if I were in this guy’s situation, I don’t think I’d be too worried about getting to the bottom of what happened. I would simply want my f’ing money so I could buy the computer. Best way for him to get his money is to get Apple’s attention. How to get the attention of a computer company?? I dunno–use a computer maybe?? Or the internet?? Seriously, I’m sure Apple has a team of top lawyers to get their back. I don’t think they really need the support of the Mac community on Digg.com.

tubeblender: thought he was 25 not 22 years old

tubeblender: Did anyone bother to Google this idiot? (mainomega)

Sunbun: This happened to me at WalMart a year and a half ago.

I received a certain bag of choice crap from this one website. It contained a six-pack of calendars, in retail condition, wrapped, with a WalMart barcode.

Like any other person who has their own share of calendars, I went to go return it. They gave me around $80 in store credit.

I go home, check the gift card balance, and find it to be $0. Turned out someone wrote down the card number and, thinking I stole the calendars, zeroed the balance of the card. I drove back to WalMart and, after a two hour wait, got back the amount in cash.

So yes, if they think you stole something, they will probably screw you over like this. It’s not a rare occurrence.

michaelschmitt: “why did i get the gift card in Chicago and go up to Wisconsin (milwaukee)

well my Girlfriend (who is wonderfully supportive of this fight) lives in chicago, and i simply was there for the weekend. So i took it with me figuring i could just take care of it if we ended up going to the mall or i did or something. So monday rolls around, and i drove back up to milwaukee. I went to the local apple store, and tried to use the gift card. Plain and simple.”

Okay, I must be confused. I thought you said “i was just going to return the cs3, get a gift card, and get a mac pro (which they didnt have any refurbs in the store at the price point so i was going to wait and get it in milwaukee)”

f8tbrautmehere: “On my other laptops I close the screen all the time while they are doing stuff so the screen lasts longer (maybe just in my head) and better battery life. But since we got the 17″ MBP I noticed this put them to sleep so now i just turn off the lcd using the brightness button and close the lid leaving about an inch open so it doesn’t go to sleep and doesn’t over heat.”

Just Google this douche. It was an entertaining few minutes of my time.

michaelschmitt: poolin1243 aka macman64, why two digg accounts?

“i got my cs3 from my internship.”

Cool. You already had a copy of CS3.

“I am a 22 year old college student who now does not have the proper computer, or the money to buy a new computer for my classes.”

That sucks. At least you already had a copy of CS3. Too bad your parents knew that you needed a copy of Adobe Creative Suite 3 – Design Premium, but they didn’t know you already had a copy. How did they know that you needed this particular software without knowing that you also needed a computer to run it on?

“i was just going to return the cs3, get a gift card, and get a mac pro (which they didn’t have any refurbs in the store at the price point so i was going to wait and get it in milwaukee)”

Okay, so you wanted to buy a refurbished Mac Pro workstation. No laptop required for use in class then. You were just required to buy a Mac.

“and for those who havent been in competitive college environments in 25 years…give it a try…then u will understand how easy it is for a class to be dropped based on requirements…”

Yeah, prerequisites are a bitch. If they didn’t require you to have a laptop for use IN class, however, how would they ever know whether or not you owned a Mac, and why would they care, as long as you had access to a Mac?

“(i just convinced my mom to buy a white macbook for her business :)

Good. I was hoping you knew the difference between a Mac Pro (which you wanted to buy refurbished) and a MacBook Pro or MacBook. Your school just wanted you to have a Mac, but it didn’t have to be a laptop. So why would they drop you from class if you didn’t need a laptop? Were the instructors opposed to the use of their own campus computer labs?

“we students do have problems getting in labs, its hard when theirs 10 computers and 20 people trying to use them!”

Oh. So they would let you use the labs, but the labs were too crowded. I can see why that would make you drop classes. I’m sure all the other students waiting for computers were about to drop classes, too. Most big campuses have several computer labs, however, and they are not too crowded late at night, except when mid-terms or finals approach.

“and who are all you people to be the judge and judgement and know all about the requirements of my school’s program.”

You did submit this to Digg, did you not? macman64 joined Digg in August 2007 just to submit this story. Are you not poolin1243 and macman64? You invite judgment any time you call attention to yourself. I mean, don’t you see the little thumbs down / thumbs up icons all over this site? Judgments all over the place.

I hope you get what you deserve, whether it’s a $2000 refund, or . . . something else.

postalblowfish7: what a whiney blogger. don’t like what people have to say about you and your parents? don’t post stories about you and your parents on the internet. “this is the last blog i’m ever going to post” – lol whatever.

nads: Bloody hell, what is wrong with some of you lot? WTF concern is it to you that he believes he needs a computer or not? it’s none of your business.

Seaton… LMAO at you.

Green Flag #1 – He produces a receipt showing the transaction.

Green Flag #2 – His PARENTS bought the gift, not everybody is a warez whore or price savvy to know where to buy PC software at really cheap prices.

Green Flag #3 – He was given a GIFT, when was the last time someone told you what gift you were going to be given, before you got it? Your life would be very boring if that was the case.

Green Flag #4 – Why would you believe it to be a police issue straight away? Surely the police have more serious criminal work to be getting on with? Obviously it then did get very serious and the police were informed.

Green Flag #5 – Would you go to all this trouble for the possibilty Apple MAY give you a gift? If so, that’s a lot of trouble to produce a fake ticket, luckily find out a gift card to be yours be sued many miles away AND public announce your Apple case number for many many apple employees to check. I don’t know where the whole poor student thing came from but yes he must be middle-class for his parents to afford such gifts, lucky him. Move on. The story is that Apple may once again try and deny accountability for a problem on their end.

moracity: Story is BS:

1) If he already has CS3, how can he not have a computer?
2) No one gives someone a $2000 gift without a receipt.
3) How would he get store credit if he can’t even show that the software was purchased from Apple. You can get CS3 from anywhere.
4) If he wanted a MacBook, why didn’t he just get one instead of a gift card?

Nothing in his story makes sense. I don’t believe for a second that he was given a 2000 gift card without a receipt for the software.

AC/DC Gives iTunes the Finger, Goes Exclusive with Verizon

August 2, 2007

Apple Exploring MultiTouch Interface Gestures

What other users say about this:

ironman110: the future is bright and its mouse- and keyless!!!juhuuuuu! Everybody steals, it`s who makes it their own that counts. Just like songs!

jmander: Reply to BOFH2’s comment of :
“since this is apple what are they going to do with the middle finger gesture?”
My answer would be:
Save it for the “Windows” key?

BOFH2: since this is apple what are they going to do with the middle finger gesture

ipodwheels: After Microsoft released “Surface”, surely this is not very original. The worst thing is people see this and say, wow, Apple is really making another innovation. C’mmon guys… we are smarter than that.

jmander: This coompany has been around for awhile now. Does the same thing…
http://www.frogpad.com/

amrush4th: patents suck it, I can’t believe people can patent touching. So if I fondle my wifes boob in wrong finger combo apple will sue me?

pr5owner: what the hell kind of gesture is Cut and paste? you need 3 contact points but it says you can do it with a thumb and a finger? what kind of mutant hands do apple employees have?

mergatroid: I could see a future Apple laptop where the mechanical keyboard and mouse are replaced by a MultiTouch glass similar to the latest iPhone. Apple invented the mouse, then replaced it. Cupertino does it again!

Imagine …

astrosmash: Their laptop hardware is already capable of multi-touch gestures (e.g. two-finger scrolling), since the last iBook revisions in 2004. It’s just a matter of adding it in software.

brokensince1982: im multi touching myself right now.

KirinDave: A lot of these are just modifications of the gestures that the old MultiTouch FingerWorks keyboards used. I am a little surprised to see they actually seem to have used nearly the same gesture set as the old keypad panel gesture set.

I’ve heard Apple bought FingerWorks, so I guess this makes sense.

listrophy: Hello, Minority Report. My, how I’ve lusted after your control scheme for years.

imikedaman: Apple patents things all the time. Don’t read too much into this.

cheddarbek: 300 gestures PER HAND!?

Jesus, that complicated an I’d have thought it was a Microsoft patent!

TomPlansMedia: no way theyre planning four and five finger gestures on an phone. i think multitouch will follow coverflow as the shit we start seeing everywhere

Can Your Mouse Last 18 Years? A Mac User gets her money’s worth

August 2, 2007

CLIFFosakaJAPAN“I was working on invoices on my Mac,” she told me. “And my mouse just died.” Jo’s Mac is a Mac IIci. We’re talking a circa 1989 computer; We discussed the mouse’s problem. It was the clicker. It wasn’t clicking anymore. Not bad when you consider that she’s been clicking with it for 18 years. I think she got her money’s worth.[...] Thanks to CLIFFosakaJAPAN for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1445Diggs).

What other users say about this:

tmcdigg: Old computer equipment were made of HARD plastics, these days.. EVERY piece of computer equipment is made from FLIMSY cheap and brittle plastic designed to break in 3-5 years. However, look at the cost.. you can buy 3 replacements with the cost savings..

Something tells me the product designers and Chinese manufacturers are getting too cheap and LAZY at not making products better. Who’s with me in thinking it’s a scam to keep people buying and buying? We need to start tracking the average lifespan of products so we can start putting our money on companies to make products which last.

dstz: “Heck, my 1984-vintage Apple IIe still works. Should I call the press?”

Only when it fails.

DustinR: My old Kensington trackball had lasted 12+ years. I had bought a replacement of it and that one broke before the old one did. If I could find it it might still work today.

michaelbolton: i’ve been using a Razer Diamondback for a year now – daily 3d modeling and drafting work, as well as heavy FPS usage on both my PC and Mac – the thing still works exactly as it did the day I bought it. I’ve literally beat the shit out of this thing and its still in mint working condition. I highly recommend them.

As for the article, I’ve gotta wonder how much use that thing got.

Daiken: I don’t get it. I have a mac mouse from like 86 and it still works…

Ogedei: My keyboard is 16 years old.
I have been active on IRC and MOOs. None of the letters have worn off.

It is an AT style keyboard I use an adaptor to plug it into my P4.

Rock on.

AnotherThought: had mine for 6-7 yrs still snooping around the mouse pad and going strong…

oyourmom: My G5 mouse has been abused like crazy (LAN parties, dropped on concrete, me slamming it against the desk as hard as i can when i loose in counterstrike, diablo games, all that stuff) and it still works just as well when i bought it. The only thing bad thats happened is the weight cartridge comes out but i just threw that away.

itsjenjen: That’s great, but why on earth would you want to use an antiquated system? The mouse is dead-now it’s time for an upgrade!!

subxero37: Old hardware was just built better. Many computers from the era work beautifully, while newer computers have problems left and right — overheating, bad capacitors, bad power supplies, failing hard drives, you name it.

I’m still using an IBM Model M from 1984. My favorite keyboard of all time. Only downside was it had to be modified to work with newer boards since the Model M’s logic levels are a bit weird. Just a couple 4.7k resistors and you’re good to go.

plexxer: I currently use a DEC keyboard with my machine. I am not exactly sure how old it is, but it has a PC/XT switch on the back.I take it apart and thoroughly clean it every couple years.

In comparison, I just had the keyboard replaced on my wife’s 14″ G4 iBook because some of the printing on the keys was disappearing.

MBHoy: Her hosting didn’t last 15 minutes.

http://www.duggmirror.com

MBHoy: Shame her hosting doesn’t compare.

HydraulicToast: Almost 1000 people dugg a story about how this womans mouse broke? I’m a self admitted Apple fanboy, but even I know that this is ridiculous.

MrTeQ: The mouse lasts longer than their hosting provider..

Apple Files a Very Sophisticated iPhone Gesturing Patent

Is Apple Building A Photoshop Replacement?

August 2, 2007

CLIFFosakaJAPANApple is going to use this new image editing suite as a club against Adobe. I’m not completely sure why yet, but apparently Apple has decided that things will go smoother for them if Adobe isn’t in the way.[...] Thanks to CLIFFosakaJAPAN for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 43Diggs).

What other users say about this:

MrSarcasm: Yeah, but it will probably only run on MACs, so no BREAKING: KILLER now, or later.

wild: From the first comment about Flash: “It is a horrible resource hog and many (most) sites that use it use it badly.”

Thats completely wrong. They don’t support it on mobile devices because there isn’t a mouse interface. A lot of the code in flash is designed around mouse based interaction. When you have a device that only records the touch of the mouse, and not a hover state, it makes flash inoperable. Add in the complexity of the iPhone’s multi touch screen, and you really screw up the works.

Stop spreading lies about flash, just because YOU don’t like it. A lot of sites are using it well.

Chewie67: I’m not sure Apple is working on a Photoshop killer. Many have tried, and thus far, no one has succeeded.

Granted, Apple stepped into the video market with Final Cut and very quickly began to eat Avid’s lunch. So if anyone could do it, perhaps it’s Apple.

Honestly, I think Aperture was simple a shot across the bow of Adobe. It was a way to say “Look. Either you get your act together and keep pumping out quality versions of your apps for the Mac, or we’re going to step in and wipe out your Mac sales completely. Oh yeah, then we’ll release a Windows version, and start to chip away at your big cash cow.”

Seems like it worked, doesn’t it?

tjordan83: Lol, replace Adobe. Good Joke.

crackah: At least they didnt use killer….

nacc: Adobe does get in the way.

bradspry: I’d like to see Apple do for Flash, what Preview did for PDF. Preview is fast, not perfect, but fast.

dssstrkl: The reason why the iPhone doesn’t support flash is the same reason why no other mobile device supports flash (or Java). It is a horrible resource hog and many (most) sites that use it use it badly. There are any number of flash-heavy sites that if I leave open for any number of minutes, my CPU usage flies through the roof. If flash can have that kind of effect on a macbook pro, I think it would simply annihilate my iPhone.

Aperature was not a competitor to any Adobe product when it was released; Lightroom was a response to Aperature, not the other way around. Apple and Adobe have their issues, but I just don’t see this one.
