iPodwizard for Mac Donation Drive

August 4, 2007

l3lackJ4ckiPodwizard.net is hosting a “Donation Drive” to help get a professional coder to develop the highly popular iPodwizard program for the Macintosh operating system. Please show your support.[...] Thanks to l3lackJ4ck for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 49Diggs).

What other users say about this:

guitarjockey: I want this so bad. If I had they money I would proudly donate.

PsychoAzn: >< can’t donate… yet…
don’t own a mac but i’ll try donating neway…
.asian (krn ipod)

ichaelmay8: I’m not a mac os user(i use windows and linux), but I agree that that this program is needed on more platforms. Who said that modding was windows only? I’d contribute to the fund, but I’m a broke teenager. Sorry.

xFilthyxJesusx: … and in a month most iPods will be replaced by iPods running OS X …

That would be awesome.

ipodhcker: Much needed to expand the database of ipod modding mac users.

TheAcidQueen: We need this bad. The iPod belongs to mac users >_>

*Que Mac Hatrid*

l3lackJ4ck: This would be a major advancemnet in the mac ipoding world! no more need for winblows!

Apple adds iPhone iPod Hi-Fi Tone Control support

August 4, 2007

titlesaysitall“Along with documented security and Safari bug patches, and several undocumented but user-discovered changes to other applications, Apple has updated the iPhone’s software in version 1.0.1 to enhance iPod accessory compatibility. When docked in an iPod Hi-Fi speaker system, an iPod Hi-Fi menu now appears under Settings, enabling the iP…”[...] Thanks to titlesaysitall for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 30Diggs).

Pirillo lists 20 reasons he’s happy with Apple iPhone

August 4, 2007

charholly9Chris Prillio, Lockergnome founder, has come up with 20 reasons why he’s keeping his Apple iPhone; this after his earlier “20 Reasons” why he didn’t get an iPhone on the very first day piece.[...] Thanks to charholly9 for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 31Diggs).

What other users say about this:

danny951: “Don’t buy it for the hype – TRY it for the hype, but buy it because you’re tired of the shit everybody else keeps shoving into your pocket.”

Nice way to look at it.

Ireland: “you have to try it in person – the commercials don’t do it justice”
Keep in mind people – this is coming from a fairly well respected tech geek and sceptic – wow, I’m impressed.

streak: “18. I don’t want to admit it, but I’d just as soon have this thing with EVDO than a tricked-out something-else with 3G.”

I believe he means EDGE, not EVDO (which is 3G). The point is, it’s better to be accurate (with HTML rendering) than fast. EDGE gained a bad reputation in part because EDGE phones are generally older and configured with slow processors. In contrast, the iPhone has a faster processor (620 MHz) than perhaps any other phone available today. This speed makes up for much of the slowness of EDGE, while the accuracy of HTML rendering makes any waiting worthwhile. EDGE coverage is also much broader than any carrier’s 3G coverage. 3G phones may have faster raw throughput (when in a 3G coverage area), but they are hampered somewhat by slower processors and… why bother with them anyway, when they can’t render HTML worth beans?

If you already recognize the value of a smartphone, because you already own one, then switching to an iPhone may be a no-cost, all-benefit decision, because the iPhone unlimited data plan is half the price of the data plans for other smartphones ($20/month versus $40/month). After taxes and fees, the savings over 2 years makes the iPhone effectively free.

Macenstein’s “Mac Chick of the Month” (August 2007): Lauren Reeves

August 4, 2007

CLIFFosakaJAPANThis month we present you with the lovely, Lauren Reeves, a former Alaskan ABC news reporter turned NY actress, comedian, and model – and of course, a bonafide Mac Geek! (How BIG a Mac Geek? Well, she sent us her submission in APPLEWORKS for crying out loud! I mean, even WE don’t use AppleWorks!). A regular on Letterman, SNL, and Conan O’Brien…[...] Thanks to CLIFFosakaJAPAN for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1281Diggs).

What other users say about this:

franklinbluth: She’s pretty. And she seems down to earth for the most part.

tecratour: Ok, she likes Fight Club, Chili Peppers, AND Bikes?? I’m in love.

Not to mention shes gorgeous.

macsrbetter36: I’ll show her that my PowerBook isn’t the only thing of mine that’s 17″

aliceinreality: is this the best they can do? she barely understands what she’s even saying.

using Appleworks is a big tip off, so is calling Apple stuff “Mac products” and the fact that she hadn’t touched an Apple product until she got a video ipod.

ghall: She looks plastic in the first pic.

beggersfunk: She is awesomely cute but my first Apple Product is the Vide iPod..he shouldn’t be a Mac Chicks untill she season out. Oh well eye candy regardless

whiteyMcBrown: She’s fantastic!

hoovcluck: I find it interesting how Apple, the icon of the modern liberal, objectifies women like this.

Not to mention the amount of pollution caused by the I-pod batteries.

bitspace: Uh… “I just got a new and improved G5 about two months ago.” Yeah.

iStunT: “Hopefully never, two wrongs don’t make a right, if you take my meaning.”

Actually they do. Kinda the same way two negatives make a positive.

Boondoggle: I could care less if she uses a Mac, personally, I’d rather just see her twat and be done with it.

sleastack: She’s nice but I cant tell what she looks like without the crappy RETOUCHING…

Vicujozobenaxod: This isn’t news, this is porn for Mac users. They probably get off on the idea that a hot chick likes what they (and 4.6% of computer users) run, and they use a formula to calcuate the improved odds of getting laid by whipping out their Macbooks in a public place.

GuinnessGoblin: She kind of looks like a Barbie…

shawnz: she couldn’t go a day without using her “g5 and iphone?” i wonder if she even knows what the OS in OSX stands for.

Journeys inside the iPhone’s SDK – iPhone text editor app released!

August 4, 2007

dchartiTUAW delves into the iPhone’s OS using hacker tools and produces the first iPhone text editor app![...] Thanks to dcharti for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 472Diggs).

What other users say about this:

dclinton: Looking forward to when the API is opened up fully.

pcpimpster: Why does the title say SDK? it should say “IPhone hack kit”. An SDK is a planned and supported kit which would be released and endorsed by Apple. This is neither of those. Thats why you can only do really cool stuff like edit text… Friggin gahey.

sukimashita: It’s interesting to see how the Internets is able to bend almost anything to it’s liking when there is just enough demand/interest for it.

astrosmash: The reason the iPhone didn’t ship with a 3rd-party SDK is that
1. There were higher priorities (e.g. making the iPhone work, which they barely got done in time)
2. Security issues: They need to ensure that developers/hackers don’t have access to the raw cellular network.

One way to safely secure 3rd-party applications is to sandbox them inside a virtual environment (Java, Flash, Applescript, etc) and to disallow all native code. I thought this would be the way Apple goes, but these new *native* Cocoa applications may force Apple to get the security right, at which point a native Cocoa SDK could be released publicly.

With the speed of the hardware, size of the screen, and the unique touch interface, the ability for developers to write real Cocoa applications and take advantage of technology like Core Animation could be the iPhone’s real killer feature.

SteveNojobs: I want an App that improves my love life, increases my IQ, lets me choose between multi-touch and tactile feedback, makes me look good and costs less than $10.

Oh wait, that’s the iPoor.com

danny951: I love all the attention the iPhone is getting from 3rd party devs. It’s actually funny — all the haters keep saying, “just wait until more people are using Macs. They’ll get hacked up just like Windows”, when actually it seems that all the attention that has been given to the iPhone, the Apple TV and even Macs lately has only made the respective platforms BETTER!

So I’m sayin’ — BRING ON THE ATTENTION!

danny951: I think it’s time for someone to start a “My Dream iPhone App” competition.

superkendall: Apple has already had one iPhone update out, yet it seems most of the hacks still work – so obviously even though such work is unsupported, Apple condones it (or at least doesn’t care if it proceeds).

My guess is they’ll care more if someone does get network unlocking, but probably will still not try to prevent other hacks.

Icebird: And this is different from Notes because…

kaje: Sweet…Notes without…the notepad…

nicarley: Over the next few weeks I think you will see all kinds of applications running on the iphone. I hope Apple will be forced to embrace 3rd party development! I for one welcome it! Thanks to the hard working software developers behind all this!!! I am waiting for the bluetooth modem hack that allows me to use Edge on my Macbook when in remote locations. Or maybe some router like functionality that serves up Edge over Wi-Fi. Ahh one could hope!

smurf22: I like this actually, if the iphone was unlocked we’d have crappy apps you pay for. Instead we get ones that are free.

d3matt: When it said text editor, I was thinking that VI had been built for the iphone

superpixel: Tom, not sure what that means, but around here we call it DOPE! srsly, when are we going to see Pong, Doom, Hexen, a GBA emu, and (naturally) an Apple ][ emulator on the iPhone? get coding Erica Sadun! Oh, and I’d like ActiveX too, since I feel these iPhones are way too secure.

TannerC: Great! Now all the iPhone users can edit their Notes.

iPhone screenshot utility released

August 4, 2007

dchartiTUAW has developed a command line iPhone app (no, not a web app) that can take screenshots![...] Thanks to dcharti for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 710Diggs).

What other users say about this:

wafu: After some tweaking, you can get up to 6 frames A SECOND.. here’s how to do it. Basically, you have to compile the source to change the output to .pdf, which outputs much faster (as it’s the native image processing on OS X). Here’s proof – video made from the .pdf outputs (keep in mind it’s 6 frames a second, so it’s a bit slow).

pr5owner: HTF did this hit the front page? SCREENSHOTS?!?!?!?! i have 3 diffrent screen shot prorgams on my wm phone and i didnt even install them! it came with other programs (WM6 custom rom, resco photo viewer, cool camera app)

zezerik: I’m still waiting for the iPhone to wipe my ass and make me breakfast

IncognitoCraven: This is not Freshmeat. Stop karmawhoring with every nigglet of pointless Apple drivel.

Sidzilla: I have taken it upon myself to bury as lame any story with iPhone in it. They are great, but enough is enough. To paraphrase Groucho Marx, I like my cigar, too, but I take it out of my mouth every once in a while.

yingjai: Digg is now known as iDigg. (Oh yeah, burried as lame.)

robwilkens: Burried as duplicate.. There was a story about the ‘first iPhone app’ yesterday which included information that it might be able to run other programs (i suppose including a screenshot). I suppose the next breaking story about this application for this phone would be that it runs vi or you can type ls and see a directory. _The breaking news was the first app was made, that was old_

nzknzknzk: Seems to work quite well, http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8166/foo0tc2.png

britkev1: Nice and all but really needs a GUI attached to make it really useful.

TaintedWisdom: “iPhone screenshot utility released”

Too bad it still can’t take pictures rofl.

wikimart: Screen Shot : http://www.fileegg.com/imageview.php?quickkey=839883C98BE96CB9&thumb=5

floydax: WOW, an internet communications device with a screenshot utility?! Awesome !

AxiomShell: Wow … digg is slowly becoming the Tucows/Softpedia of iPhone homebrew.

rebotfc: For all the closed minded haters, this app is great for taking screenshots of all the upcomming iphone apps being developed. No more will you have to rely on dodgy out of focus videos.

Basically if you ain’t got something constructive to say get the hell out the apple section.
