Airport Extreme Updated With Gigabit Ethernet

August 7, 2007

longofestIn Apple’s press release for the iMac, they make a small note that the Airport Extreme has been updated to include gigabit ethernet. Apple’s 802.11n Airport Extreme base station had only included 10/100 Base-T ethernet, which had been a sore-spot in reviews.[...] Thanks to longofest for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 754Diggs).

What other users say about this:

chrisjscott: Last time I checked, the only other competitor to the AEBS was Linksys’ WRT350N (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1162354643512&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=4351239789B01) – it has disk sharing capability PLUS gigabit Ethernet.

Unfortunately, the reviews pronounce it a PoS. So, personally, I’m very glad to hear this news. This will make me finally retire my trusty, old WRT54G.

malliemcg: I’d much rather they fixed up/updated the USB speed w/ a disc attached (aka “AirDisk”) 1.5-2MB/sec is just plain shite.

M

scrytch: For all of the detractors – name me another affordable 802.11n router/access point that supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies? If you want best performance for your 802.11n connections, Linksys, D-Link and Netgear don’t have an answer for you.

Regards,
Shane.

liuping: gigabit make the remote disk functionality much more usable for back up programs like, say, Time Machine?

Morky: grr. just bought one a month ago. eh.

macsrock888: is apple like shy about talking about their wireless networking devices. For example when the original Wireless N Airport was released there was no announcement despite it being released the same day as an apple event, and today the same thing. I think Apple needs to let Airport Extreme out of the “closet”.

fishbert: Just what I was waiting for before buying one. =)

wjanoch: Yawn… Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad to see it. Just don’t think it changes much, and the way Apple announced it tells me they agree. One more thing that will be there in that OLD Apple product years from now when the technology finally catches on and there are products that actually make use of it.

Yes, Gigabit gets a lot of use these days, but not in the places you’re likely to find an Airport Extreme Base Station.

Wm

strum40: Now I don’t have to look at full websites now, not just plane text. I’m surprised it can handle so much traffic for being such a small terminal.

pandapoo: Oh Great! That’s brilliant when I already dropped the cash on one last month! This should have been included from day one! ..almost wish I’d bought a linksys..

scabbers: I like my airports to be the opposite of “extreme” these days.

jabberwolf: 3 ports, day after everyone else institutes the same technology, and over price it.
Now paint it white and take away any buttons.
Ahhh now we can call it Apple !

eleven: I happy about this as well – but I’ll still be using my dd-wrt’d linksys. Apple seems to be listening to it’s customers more and more. Though it was hard understand how they could have left off gigabit ethernet in the first place.

Buckeye70: So everyone who already bought it gets screwed when Apple adds something that should have already been in the router.

iPhones automatically ready for new Web Gallery

August 7, 2007

cape_daveApple iPhones are offering post to a .Mac web gallery for users without 1st synching or connecting to a computer.[...] Thanks to cape_dave for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 591Diggs).

What other users say about this:

imrichbitch: iphone r only 4 losers that cant afford a nokia n95

mobilehavoc: For the last time it’s not a timed update because then all .Mac users with an iPhone would have the update at the same time. They basically updated people’s .Mac accounts which triggered this feature on the iPhone. This is why some people have it and some people don’t.

Not rocket science at all but amusing to see how easily people are impressed.

THEMACGOD: I’ve had my .Mac account on my iPhone since i got it… the iPhone, that is.
Anyway, no extra button, no matter how many resets, syncs, etc. Maybe when iLife ‘08 gets in this weekend, the problem will resolve…

Although, the upgrade to 10gb disk space/100gb transfer a month was seamless, but GREATLY appreciated…

citrik: One down side is that it looks like you need iPhoto 08 to create a “Gallery”. Kinda weak that you can’t create it from the .mac page…

poohat1000: http://www.ipicli.com did this WEEKS ago

Dagreenman: Oh, yeah thats nice. Now, about Flash and java……..

joshHighland: If the image is over 300K, AT&T will charge you $0.50 per image to send. With the 2.0 megapixel cam that you cant scale down, most pictures are over 300K.

schavira: Don’t they have a deal with Yahoo? Why not make a Flickr sync?

jabberwolf: The iBeta continues.

vinterstille: So exactly like any phone can do with a small free mobile java app from http://shozu.com and flickr? Every time i take a snapshot with my aging Nokia N70 it asks me if I want to “Save to Flickr?”

totorototoro: So it knows who has .Mac accounts, and updates their iPhones selectively?
(no .Mac account here, no update :) )

xoineg: looks like you need a .Mac account for it to show. I don’t use it so mine has nothing, but my friends has it already.

dusingaz: hmm, mine has not updated.

37prime: Time sensitive software deployments. Apple has thought about the iPhone a lot. I bet if we could dissect the source codes, we’ll find some other time sensitive software “deployment” already installed in the iPhone.

gorgonzola22: This is news?

First live dot Mac web gallery

cape_davePlay with a real, live dot Mac web gallery.[...] Thanks to cape_dave for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1435Diggs).

What other users say about this:

jason777: someone please CLONE THIS

leksdraven: It’s worth noting that QuickTime 7.2 (the application itself) is required by Apple for others to view YOUR videos using the service. They even disable the download link if you don’t have QT installed–how Apple of them. So much for Linux users and other non-Apple *NIXes…(sigh) this is what open-source development gets for building the foundation upon which OS X is built?

Seaton: The resolution on that underwater video is amazing.

alanism: i likes. especially the album/preview rollover effect. the carousel is nice, and if anybody that plays with flash- you can find it here: http://www.n99creations.com/vieweg.php?id=5

Wilarico: Nice… too bad its not free, Picasa rules!

sjalloul: Nothing really new, just a CSS and JS nothing that isn’t out there already!

DarkSideOfOrder: Gallery loads quite fast on the iPhone over EDGE via redirection to an iPhone optimized page.

Once you select a particular photo gallery all the photos download into Safari’s cache and display in thumbnail format. Has a similar look to the iPhone Photos application. Selecting the photos and switching between them is a breeze.

Video loads pretty fast ever EDGE as well however their quality is not that great. Apple was probably more interested in having someone with an iPhone download the videos fast and compromised its quality.

Still the site looks impressive on the iPhone.

plaxx: btw, the rollover-scrolling mechanism is patent pending!

movd: Nice the elite colleg clique is going for a ride.

jtray: Sitting at work click on the link and I get “We recommend a newer browser.
For the best experience with .Mac Web Gallery, we recommend:
Windows
Safari 3 Public Beta or later
Firefox 1.5 or later
Internet Explorer 7 or later
You can use your current browser, but you might not have access to all features.”

Guess what browser I am using? Funny I have been recommending a new browser as well. Oh well I will take a look at it when I get home.

MightyMack: The javascript is about 10,000 lines of code!

imacreep: It’s an easy way for amateurs to make a portfolio or a website in a “flash”.. .Mac is not for everyone and yes it’s true can be replaced by a bunch of other apps but just for the ease of use, it’s amazing. I use to have it when I worked for Apple, I had a full acount for free but lost it when I left the company. I never paid for it again since I didn’t find the use for it… it still doesn’t mean it’s not a great idea for customers that need to connect with others, save work, publish and broadcast all over the world.

amorica: The WOW Starts Now!!!!!. Sorry Microsoft but apple got my WOW :-) all i got from Vista was a YAWN :-O

modemlooper: Its actually the fake steve’s family LOL

PiMPSP: Are you kidding me?…theirs nothing on that page that you cant do yourself with numerous programs out there and host em on your own servers if you wish, on top of that some even add more functionalyt like adding comments etc…etc..I cannot be the only person seeing this lame attempt here.

Official – iWork ‘08 Trial Download

August 7, 2007

TimmyGUNZApple has posted a 30 day trial to iWork ‘08 which features the all new spreadsheet application called “Numbers.”[...] Thanks to TimmyGUNZ for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 641Diggs).

What other users say about this:

edLarsen85: I just downloaded the trial but when i try to install an error: “iwork08trial” can’t open. error in the pack (999) shows

What dos this mean? and what do i do?

plz help iam a newbie whit an ibook G4

LeeSoong: Bought my copy already – thanks Apple – $79 for an M.S. Office replacement!

Only Open Office on Ubuntu can beat that.

Sefus: my god. thats it. I’m unclicking the apple news button.
omg apple! *giz* :-/

BamaMac: Being using the trial all day. Numbers is a worth adversary to Excel, but it is missing some advanced functions (I do a lot of regression analysis) that I still need for work. However, I have a feeling it will be my go to for most spreadsheet work. Keynote continues to be much better than Power Point. Pages has greatly improved. It was always a decent Page Layout program, but the word processing capability has been increased dramatically. I might actually be able to type papers now. Does anyone know if there is any EndNote compatibility now with Pages?

zioxide: Just tried it out. Pages 08 is very nice now that it has a dedicated word processing mode. I’ll probably start using it over MS Word 04 for research papers.

Keynote rocks as always.

Numbers looks nice. Sure it could use a little more polishing, but remember its a brand new v1.0 app. By Numbers 2 or 3, it will be amazing.

craftyshrew: I imported a very complex expense report that hasn’t converted well in other “Excel Killers”. Everything came over fine and even recognized the difference currencies I use. The only two things that Office has over iWork is Mail Merge (Probably because I haven’t messed around enough) and integrated label templates (Which i guess I can just use the converted .doc ones from the Avery website). So, this is far more than I expected!

yanked: Having used Numbers a bit yesterday, I’d say it’s an okay clone of Excel, but a bit underpowered. The main issue for the simple spreadsheet I was using was that Numbers can’t do a scatter plot with lines (dates on one axis, prices on the other). Plus, there seems to be a large bug in setting the axes for the scatter plot, where it mixes up the X and Y ranges in a weird way. Nor does it automatically format the graphs nearly as well as Excel does (jumbled lines and messy decimals). I’m no fan of MS, but Numbers feels a bit unpolished. However, it does snap the graphs to a grid in a nice way that formats the spreadsheet cleanly if you’re going to print it.

rebotfc: Couple of deal breakers for me, although i hate MS Office ‘04 I cant quite wipe it just yet.

1) Subtotal function doesn’t import, this is essential for summing over only visible cells. For instance you would combine it with a filter to show the cost of a subset of records.

2) Slow scrolling on some tables. 500 records with columns A to V, its very slow to scroll, admittedly there is a mix of text , formulas and numbers but I don’t see how its slower than Rosetta Office ‘04.

So yeah i’d love to use this but for a couple of essential ( and not really that super-business-user features) it’s unworkable.

vystral: OOOO SPREADSHEETS!!!!1!!1one

forgive me for shitting myself with excitement…oh that’s right. Apple makes them uber-cool looking. Well, hell if my spreadsheets LOOK cool, then screw gaming or pr0n. I’ll just do my finances instead!!!

cricoste90: MS OFFICE FOR THE WIN!

Liamiskinda: I am sad to see a typo ….. :(

robwilkens: That’s *3* “iWork is coming soon” articles on the front page in 24 hours. Everytime apple gets trashed, they raise another one up hoping no one will catch on to their scheme. It was spam before and it’s spam now.

jermm: Anyone have a key they can “spare”?

boyasunder: I downloaded and tried this last night to edit a Word file from work. It imported it and let me work on it just fine. However when I exported it back into a .doc (doing a normal save seemed to put me on the path to saving it as a pages doc) it didn’t so such a good job. When I opened the “new” .doc file, a lot of the lines we no longer rendering on the page… and the fonts were screwed up. For some damn reason everything I’d worked on had been reduced to 10 pt.

It was easy to fix, but seriously, they should clean up exporting if they want people to really be able to interoperate with MS Word.

First Hands on With new iMac and new Keyboard

August 7, 2007

CrazyRussianEngadget just got their hands on the 4th gen iMac. And all they can say is “it’s all super sexy”[...] Thanks to CrazyRussian for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1491Diggs).

What other users say about this:

DejuanHobson: A benevolent man should allow a few faults in himself, to keep his friends in countenance.

nofear1az: Man you guys are hard… I mean so critical. What is your deal?
I actually find the new iMac design very nice. I have never been a huge fan of the iMac series; except for the big arm iMac, because of the thickness, chin, and too much white. But I really fell in love with this new iMac design. I like the contrasting silver/black colors and the chin is not as badly noticeably as in previous models and is much thinner now.

The glossy screen doesn’t bother me anymore because I have a Macbook and it has never been an issue with glare and I use it everywhere except outside.

It surprises me how critical people are with change. I never heard anyone mention so much about the chin or the chicklet keys on the Macbook, yah, at first they talked about the chicklet keys but it wasn’t so loudly ridiculed like I hear now. Why?

Is there anyone out there that does like this new iMac? is everyone so angry because they went away from the white? I’d swear someone killed your dog or something as you spew off in here

I almost feel I will have to be a closeted iMac user so I don’t get so much hatred for liking the new iMac design.

ifknot: In the UK PC World are still selling the old models at full price, & claim to know nothing of the release of the new iMac today!

JuliusErving: I personally think that the new design is far and away better than the old one. I thought the white color and shape of the old iMac basically just portrayed a boxy / ugly looking monitor. I even liked the design of the earlier iMac a lot better pictured here:

http://www.wired.com/news/images/full/02imac_hero_f2.jpg

The black / silver finish is slick and stylish. Not sold on the keyboard, but then again it’s not unheard of to buy a different keyboard than what comes with a computer.

I definitely agree that there should at least be an option for glossy and matte on the monitor. My macbook is glossy, which i haven’t had too many problems with aside from really bright areas, but I’m sure people would like the choice. Intrigued to check it out next time i’m in the apple store. iMac was long overdue for an update.

clyde2801: Long story short: it’s Jay Leno on a diet, and the jury’s still out on the keyboard.

NickLindeman: The new keyboard reminds me a lot of a calculator which was never a good design in the first place.

dliuzzi: Why on Earth did they decide to make the new Bluetooth keyboard compact??? I totally love the super-thin profile, and I would have definitely bought one… if it didn’t miss 35 keys. I found it stupid that I now have to decide between wireless OR full-size when the previous generation had both. I no longer see the point in using an external keyboard that is now an exact replica of the one in my MacBook.

turbineseaplane: No Matte Screen Option = No Purchase.

jocknerd: Its pretty obvious Apple’s designers have the iPhone on their mind. Please Apple, for the sake of your Mac business, keep your iPhone designers away from your Mac designers.

deadbaby: I love the chicklet keyboard style. The spaces between the keys allows me to type with reckless abandon without worrying about fat fingering nearby keys as much. I notice a marked improvement in my typing on my MacBook vs. a standard PC or Mac keyboard.

eatbeefjerky: Meh. If you REALLY need something with a super small form factor… it’s cool. I can still build a better system much cheaper, even if it isn’t in a cute little tiny case. Make it do something new, then we can talk.

UnderWurlde: Well, I for one will wait until I get my hands and eyes on one before emitting any “Oh it’s fuggly!” comments. I wasn’t too impressed at the beginning, as I was expecting a revolution, not an evolution of the present form-factor, but it is growing on me. As for the glossy screen, I hate them when they are powered down (mirror anyone?) but when they are up and running, they are a lot less reflective than the past CRT monitors due to anti-glare components within the glass.

I’ll be buying one nonetheless, just might wait until Leopard is out, to replace my 1st gen G5 iMac!

danny951: I’m typing on the new keyboard right now (wired) while using the new iMac at my house. I was at the Southlake Apple store when the first units came in the door. They didn’t even have them when I got there at ~2:05pm CST today. I was a bit shocked, but it was awesome to watch them unbox the two demo 24″ units in front of all of us.

Anyway, I have to say the new keyboard is nice to type on, easy to feel where you are on the keys, etc.. I type around 85 wpm and the new keyboard doesn’t hinder my typing speed or anything like that. I find that I can very comfortably rest my wrists on the table, instead of using some sort of wrist support (yes, I know you are not supposed to rest your wrists at all, but I do most of the time cause I’m lazy! haha).

I should say though, that I also have a Macbook, so I am used to the keyboard feel, but pretty much any new keyboard you buy is going to take a day or two to get used to the feel, so that is not really a big deal.

One other thing about the iMac itself: I am very glad I got to see it in person before looking at the photos. Actually, I did see some photos on my way to the Apple store courtesy Engadget’s live blog, but they were hard to make out. Looking at the new iMacs in person is like looking at porn. I was practically drueling watching it being unboxed. My first comment was, “I love the black bezel around the screen”. I always liked the new Plasma TVs and LCDs that had black glossy bezels because it makes the screen punch out even more. I love this on the new iMacs, but again, had I only seen it in pictures I might not have thought that.

Also, because of the black bezel, the “leno chin” looks much less obtuse. Add the new black Apple logo and it doesn’t look out of place to me like the chin on the old iMacs. The black backside of the iMac is just so smooth looking. I am in love with this new machine now. It is actually a friend of mine’s who I just “converted” to Macs :) — I will be ordering a 24″, 2.8GHz C2E in about 20 minutes for myself!

-Danny (self proclaimed fanboy)

coolbru: All these people dissing the keyboard probably haven’t tried one. I have an awful Microsoft “comfort curve” keyboard (which replaced an Apple “Pro” keyboard that I wore out). The letters wore off several keys within a week and my error rate increased dramatically. Then I got a MacBook, on which (to my initial wariness and great surprise) I can type way faster and more accurately. It’s difficult to say exactly why (I really like the light action), but it just works better for me, and shows no sign of wearing out. I’ll be getting one of these as soon as I can.

mnewlin: I guess the new (?) iMac’s design is not the quantum leap we saw with the introduction of the iMac G4 or G5.

The combination of glass and Aluminium does not really work as well as the polished white iMac look. The black border around the screen even seems really out of place. The whole thing comes off as a failed attempt to grant the new iMac a “professional” aura, when it’s not aimed at that particular segment.

I have checked the Apple Store and there is no way to select a matte display finish, which is a HUGE mistake. This alone might put many people off and rightfully so. The reflection on Engadget’s pictures seems dreadful.

Comments about the keyboard are speculations at this point, since no one has really been hands on with it yet. But I get the impression that there is such a thing as too flimsy.
