iPhone Copy and Paste: Proof of Concept [VIDEO]

August 8, 2007

RATIOhere’s a video mockup of what the missing Copy and Paste might look like on the iPhone. done in the style of the Apple iPhone demo videos.[...] Thanks to RATIO for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1614Diggs).

What other users say about this:

Ben174: Is it just me or is everything on Vimeo extra-funny.

KirinDave: Funny video, but the actual interface demo’d is worthless crap. “Select mode?” Yeah, that’s just what we want to introduce into the iphone text editor. Modality.

Instead, why not have selections be grabbed from the loop mode when a second finger touches the screen and drags? And clipboard history? It’s a nice feature for geeks, but its superfluous for the iPhone. Apple’s already patented the copy and paste gestures, they just need to get the selection mode down.

It’s videos like this that remind me how good Apple is at what they do.

criskywalker: I know…

missilesilo: dugg

bloominoctober: “Thanks for watching. I love you.”

Priceless!

fidunderground: hahahhahaha….this is totally LMAO!

Crispuk: I thought digg had a video section.

identifiedlogo: I’m thrown out of the loop here…Apart from the copy/paste idea…what the hell is going on around his mouth???????????

jc7012: it’s sideburns

sp1nm0nkey: I’ll probably get dugg down for this BUT, this is incredibly un-apple. See… pinch zoom is cool because it’s obvious, put two fingers, and pull, you’re making the interface more in sync with how you’d think it’d work. Why would tapping with a second finger have anything to do with copying? You’d have to put it in the manual or something for people to get it. It’s just not obvious. What happens if you’re selecting and you touch the screen with another finger accidentally? Now you have this copy dialog that people have to click through, which is really difficult because if someone hasn’t read the manual and doesn’t know that it exists, they’ll wonder how they got there, and get frustrated by how to get to it again.

Bulldogge16: That was an awesome video, dont have an iPhone nor a Apple, but that was pretty well done…

RooDoG: I was not expecting that… BRAVO!

dman84: Great video! I also like the idea too – although it does reuse the same touch sequence, I’m confident that a proper GUI would still make it intuitive to the user… If Apple doesn’t make use of the idea, I hope they at least consider the ending.. ;o)

SeanG: This may be obvious… but the copy/paste functionality is already built into the iPhone, there just isn’t a UI for it. Right now you can “copy/paste” a URL into an email by tapping on the address bar in Safari, then tapping the Share button. It starts an email for you and the URL is in the body – presto.

So whenever Apple does release the update, they’ll just be adding the UI, not the functionality. Cool eh?

mmxtreme: Seriously, that’s pretty awesome. The gesture looks very natural and simple to use. The clipboard popup is great too. Awesome work and the lipsyncing is really funny.

Where are the EA Mac gaming titles?

August 8, 2007

serffIn June, Electronic Arts co-founder Bing Gordon took the stage with Apple CEO Steve Jobs during the Macworld Expo keynote speech , announcing that the game maker was to once again release gaming titles for Mac OS X. Gordon promised that promised that the first titles to ship for Macs in July. It’s now Aug…so where are the games??[...] Thanks to serff for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 770Diggs).

What other users say about this:

zunigbab: The only Electronic Arts that EA excels at is the one where they are Reliably Unreliable!

Apocalyptic0n3: Seeing that they said Macworld was in June made me really not want to read this article. People need to get things like that straight. Macworld is in January. WWDC is in June.

tashpool: Enough with the bashing. People on Macs want to play games and EA came out and said they were going to release a number of games in July. No word yet from EA or anyone else for that matter, so now it’s time to wonder what the heck happened.

And no, you PC lovers, just because a game is coming to Mac doesn’t mean it’s not going to come out for the PC.
No, I didn’t buy my Mac thinking I was going to get all the games that PC gamers get.
Yes I know Macs are not as easy to upgrade.
Yes I bought a better looking, much quieter, and more secure OS computer; can we get back to question of where are the games now?

cwoolf34: CrossOver, Cider, and Wine. All are making PC games work on the Intel Mac.

krasht: I always thought that August was the month for these games for Mac.

Now pondering. At least Blizzard support the Mac ;)

mdman: First, Mac hardware is overpriced… software is sometimes incompatable, and frankly, right mouse button guys!
as for Games, Mac always sucked when it came to games, and hardware upgrades are difficult.

For 1/2 the price you can build a much more powerfull Pc.

sprech: Just buy the Apple Macbox…ahh hold on.

Miroresh: Who cares?

Zippo: Let’s be honest, Macs are aimed at designers, media makers, and regular consumers. Save for the Mac Pro, none of them are easily upgraded… and most gamers aren’t going to shell out for a Mac Pro. It makes sense for gamers to buy a PC because they can buy the custom, separate parts and build a computer themselves.
I’m a Mac man myself, but if I was a serious gamer, I’d likely have a PC as well for gaming… that or dual-boot Windows.

bkedersha: Suckers! That is the point Boys and Girls! The Mac market share is small. Porting games over is way done on your MS Project schedule. Apple could have ruled the world, but the screwed up, so F’EM! Linux is the future!

ICasualty: i believe there was something about when or closer to the release of leopard.

samfishercell: Unfortunately there are still people in the world who buy computers for things other than games, yet still want to play games on them. After using both macs and PCs for years I opted to get a mac to run my design software on. I still have a PC that I game on, but I’ve still been on the lookout for games for my mac that I can play every now and then. Truth be told, I was actually waiting to go pick up BF2142, but it looks like EA doesn’t want my money (EA not wanting money…riiight..). I think it’s pretty ridiculous that EA has just floated by their promise, especially since people online have already been able to pump out Cider ports of many of these games already.

Finding games for my mac has been more difficult than expected, and I don’t feel like robbing myself of 30GBs of harddrive space just so I can run windows. Mac games are in more than short supply, there’s no need to point that out, we’re very much away. But seriously, gamers are gamers. It just sucks that EA made such a big show about supporting mac, but doesn’t even recognize the platform on their website.

Oh well, I would gladly sacrifice EA games on my mac to make sure EA stays the heck away from Ubi :)

TheNewFlesh: Even though EA is having troubles porting some existing Windows games to mac using Cider, some nice folks had ABSOLUTELY no problem making some unofficial ports of the Grand Theft Auto series recently. Check Mininova for the Cider base files… I finally got out of Los Santos in San Andreas!! Works excellent with my PS2-knockoff gamepad :D

Sorry powerPC users, all Cider-based games = intel-mac only.

L0g1X: If you want to play games then just by a Windows computer. It’s not like back in the days when you had to get a loan to buy a computer. Mac isn’t for everyone, no matter how much Mac users try to tell you that it is. I’m a web developer and I learnt everything on a Mac in school so I got a Mac. But eventually I switched to PC because it didn’t meet my needs for certain software (and games :P ). I was skeptical about Windows, but once you try it, you know that all the rumors about it getting viruses, crashing, and being slow are all just rumors. My computer never crashed. Occasionally my software crash (just like it does on a Mac) and I can end task it. I never got those “blue scream of death”, viruses, Y2K, or anything my instructor mentioned. They both feel the same, but I just use my PC now. I never use my iMac anymore because I can do everything on my PC. But some people dedicate their Mac for graphics, photos & documents and dedicate their PC for games. That’s an option, but I’m sure you’ll eventually get tired of switching between computers and just using a PC instead. Now something that I miss about my iMac is that everything matches and it looks great. But now their new silver/black style makes you buy everything again to match it.

Azio: EA develops most of their games for every current platform — Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, PSP, DS, Game Boy Advance, Wii, even cell phones — but not Macs. Which shows us just how worthless Mac OS is as a gaming platform.

Where’s the Mac?

August 8, 2007

onethumbThere’s a huge, gaping hole in Apple’s lineup between the iMac/Mac mini and the Mac Pro. Most of the market, both home and work, buy something in between, but Apple still doesn’t offer it. They missed their chance, again, yesterday. We don’t want to buy Dells – bring back the Mac![...] Thanks to onethumb for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1739Diggs).

What other users say about this:

Kmfan: MAC does not give their customers good options on purchasing their products. Dell has a decent payment plan, but MAC does not.

simmux: My take: if you buy an iMac and then change it you don’t “throw away the monitor”. You change it too.

If you need more than 24″ of display and can afford it then you can afford a MacPro.

If you need to play games you don’t need a Mac. You need a console or a PC. Nothing wrong with buying one of the two instead of a Mac.

If you need a computer then you need a Mac. And the iMac is an excellent bargain.

techmaster7b: Actually, you have a problem if you want to buy a mac. Why are you even on the internet anyway? You should not be allowed.

macgurrl: Perhaps Apple just wants us to shell out money for a new computer every 5 years or so, when all the hardware begins to break. I have imac with a perfectly good monitor, and I know any day now, the motherboard will break, and I’ll be left with a perfectly good screen, that I can’t do anything with.

ifknot: Wow I bet Steve Jobs is reading this just now and thinking “hmmm yeah! these guys are so right get me the r&d dept” as an informal poll digg me up if your agree, digg me down if you don’t

jydesign: Where’s the “Mac Shuffle”? – I also see an opportunity for a lowest-end Mac, something wimpier than the Mac Mini. I’d call this the Mac Shuffle, it would have 256MB of RAM, run the stripped down version of OSX found on the iPhone, and rather than let you choose what application you want, it would randomly present you with an app. Turn it on, and hey you are going to IM today! (of course you could ’skip’ to the next random program, or go thru app in alpha order). It would be the perfect cheap computer for those with short attention spans! You’d need to bring your own: monitor, keyboard, mouse; power cord.

I’m kidding of course, and would also like to see a Mac that’s not as kickass as the Mac Pro, but better than the iMac or Mini. I already have a Cinema display, don’t necessarily need a Mac Pro, and a Mini ain’t enough – so this premise while not unique is spot on.

qwerty69: My one thought about the iMac has always been to wonder why it does not have Video in???

I have a friend who has a 17″ iMac G4 and although it’s good for most things he does he would see quite a performance increase if he upgraded to Core 2Duo.

Why can he not buy a Mac Mini and hook it in to the iMac’s display?????

ryanwarnersteel: Why has no one mentioned that which apparently must not be named….. Sell a MacOS that is compatible with a computer that you build yourself.

Anndruh: On my freshman dorm floor (2003-2004), over half the kids (40) all got the same “back to school” Dell laptop. By the end of the first semester, over half of THOSE (23!!!!!) had fried. The craptastic fans weren’t cooling the computer down and therefore the motherboards cooked.

I guess you could use the overheated piece of plastic and metal to reheat your ramen noodles…

Skidmark66: oh this is stupid, bury me . .

djalam: MAC’s are for mentally challenged people who thing windows is too hard for them to use…the same exact people buy iphones because “smart phone” are too hard for them to use where as smart phones are alot better with better featers

figshta: So true that I want to Digg it twice! I was hoping to the “Mac” would be released back when the G5 was about to go Intel… But all we got was the Mac Pro.

iamlutheran: I e-mailed Steve Jobs about this a long time ago. Apple needs to wake up and realise that some people want more power than a Mac mini but not as much as the Mac Pro. A mid-tower case would be cool, sort of like the Mac Pro. The thing would sell like hotcakes IMO.

NeoRicen: The market for a >iMac

nickthedude: yeah bring back the 7,000 different models of performas!
