Apple’s release of iWork ‘08 this week is embarrassing, not for its maker, but for Apple’s rival, Microsoft Corp.”This was the ultimate insult to injury,” Gartenberg said. “Not only has Microsoft not delivered the ability to read and write Open XML in its Mac Office, but at the end of the day, Apple was the one who delivered.[...] Thanks to IceBurrg for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1415Diggs).
What other users say about this:
jabberwolf: Just a thought? Comparing this with a new format basically instituted by Microsoft, to a product Microsoft has not released yet?
Wow Macfans using an OPEN SOURCE and amazed they can do it. Hmm no wonder MS has the markets and Apple does not.
That’s why its open source guys!!
nashashmi: management has gone very awry at Microsoft. what could explain such lateness.
Don’t blame Microsoft! This is the result of opensource. Microsoft must admit.
hoyanf: All good thing’s do come to an end…
For every beginning there’s an ending…
For every new born there’s death…
It’ll depends on how fast it’ll go…
Document standard that still stands till todate is PDF…

Comparing iWorks08 suite is like trying to compare Microsoft Works to Word. That said……..
iWorks08 is a very nicely laid out Desktop Publish/Word processor for the price and target market. I like Apple’s take UI design.
Basically what I am saying is if Apple can do this good of a job on a Consumer Home Office Suite I probably would probably be blown away by their Profession Edition if they ever did release one. Microsoft could never get it right with Works which quite literally sucked so they just convinced every home owner that they needed to buy the Microsoft Word/Microsoft Office Suite which is way more than any home owner needs.
For those trying to compare Numbers to Excell that is stupid. Numbers wasn’t designed for speed it was designed for simplicity and easy of use something that is more important the average user. If you need that much power in an office suite then wait for Microsoft’s next release for the Mac.
In a way, I believe that iWorks is sort of a warning to Microsoft. Basically Apple’s telling Microsoft that they can fill the low/mid end office segment in software better than They can and sort of giving Microsoft an “Idea” on where they would go if they did decide to compete. I believe that is why Microsoft still supports the Office Mac side. Microsoft really doesn’t want Apple to step in that “Pro” category. Apple does software pretty good and seems to have a better grasp at User Interfaces compared to Microsoft. Plus Apple doesn’t seem to have any problem supporting any file format in their software.
Matter of Fact, I would be surprise if Apple doesn’t already have a backup plan should that a “Pro” need arise.
That said, Microsoft Office has a huge loyal following and a big advertising name. Apple saves a ton of Advertising Dollars as well as development costs/headaches. Serves both Apple’s and Microsoft’s interests to provide a Mac version of Office.
Sidzilla: There are a couple of reasons that Microsoft hasn’t shipped a product with Open Document support for the Mac yet. First, whatever Microsoft ships is the defacto standard, and it’s up to everyone else to try and work around that. Like it or not, that’s just the way it is. Second, the Office version of Mac is the red headed step child at the picnic, no one wants or cares about it. It’s a pain in the ass to port it over to a Mac version, so they only do it once every four yeas or so. Does this let down Microsoft’s Mac users? They don’t care. 20% of their market will still have to buy it or be incompatible with the 96% of the world that uses Microsoft products. Is all this a good thing? No. Microsoft needs to be taken down a notch to reignite competition and innovation in it’s software products. The best thing for Microsoft would be if another office package became popular. Look at all the good Firefox did for IE7. Good luck to Apple and any other software company that can give Microsoft a run for it’s money.
Ossuary: Me thinks that the finger hath flippeth…
threemagic: I’m sure when MS made XML the standard for Office and other platforms had to conform, they thought to themselves.. we should feel embarrassed.
whiteyMcBrown: Please stop writing MS with a dollar sign (M$).. it’s not clever. Yes… they have a lot of money. “But will it blend?” is also finished. Besides all that, I’d consider myself a pretty average user (read: not power user) when it comes to office suites and I’m using iWork ‘08 at home, now… For me, It’s fantastic! I’m not sure what other people are doing with their spreadsheets and word processors but a suite like this for $79 (CDN) is absolutely awesome. I think Microsoft should include a toggle in Office to switch from “crazy.. too many options at once” to “simple”. To be fair, my work PC doesn’t have the new office suite with the Ribbon, yet; It may fix my usability problems with MS Office.
mirzar: Well i really dont think this is going to effect Microsft – i mean would you bother caring about 5 percent of the market?
with that said, however it seems that microsoft is slowing down its growth
ghall: Microsoft couldn’t care less about the Mac. They just need to make something until there agreement with Apple expires, the I guarantee, they are gone. Apple is now a serious threat to Micro$ofts market-share, and by phasing out Office:Mac, they could kill a lot of potential sales for the Mac. I think Apple realizes that, and they are in the perfect position for Mac to be taken seriously as an office platform with the iWork ‘08.
McDavies: When does the 5 year agreement between MS and Apples start. Office 08 may be the only release
ascotan: Have iWork 08. Numbers is nice, but it’s still not quite up to Excel’s speed of dealing with huge data sets. I routinely work with 4meg tab-delimited files and Numbers is slow compared to excel.
That being said – it’s nice to have a office replacement that is not Microsoft. Been struggles with spreadsheet for a while now.
Microsoft’s ‘bloatware’ is being delay because it takes time to recode 10 million lines written using MFC. Not surprising really. $80 for an office suite from apple? Check please!
nabilanwar: I am very happy with Keynote and use Pages when i’m taking notes in class. However I write my papers with Word to be on the safe side. MS Office 08 on Mac scrnshots look pretty sexy, hopefully it functions well too when it comes out.
cinmachina: The sooner you learn that apple doesn’t beat microsoft at anything but selling peripheral devices, the better off you’ll be.
rec0m: Has anyone actually tested this feature before they post about it all over the net? Last time I tried to open a .docx file with Pages ‘08 I get “The xml document isn’t in Word format.” which is ironic because I just saved the file in Word 07.
