iMac design vs. Audi

August 11, 2007

titlesaysitall“We’ve already seen the iPhone’s influence on the new iMac, but the Audi? A British ConceptCar site claims the aluminum and glass casing of the new iMac reminded them of another chrome, aluminum and glass design– that of an Audi. “[...] Thanks to titlesaysitall for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 20Diggs).

iPhone bill is surprisingly Xbox HUGE (lol)

August 11, 2007

andrewcodOne of our bills is a whopping 52 pages long, and my own bill is 34 pages long. They’re printed on both sides, too. What gives? This mind-numbing detail goes on for 52 double-sided pages (for 104 printed pages!) with absolutely no variance except the size of the files.[...] Thanks to andrewcod for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 2429Diggs).

What other users say about this:

magnificenthack: Oh, relax people. I’m sure AT&T doesn’t want to spend the money printing these long bills any more than the folks who haven’t yet signed up for e-billing want to spend the time reading them. And sorry to disappoint you, haters, but AT&T/Cingular has been emailing me my bill for 2 years. Just checky the little boxy on the website and your paper problem is solved.

detayls: Another vote for paperless billing unless, of course, you have some wallpapering to do….

loft306: and now we know why it realy cost so damnd much!

Seaton: 1 word…Sprint.

Haven’t gotten a bill in years, I can look up all my previous bills (up to 3 years) and download them if I wish in pdf. Sprint also doesn’t show my data usage because I truly have an unlimited plan and my phone is connected 24/7. Yes, my bill used to look like this in the old text based phone browser days (2001). Am I saying the iPhone is using old network technology? Well, yeah, but we all knew this already. In the cellular phone industry, IMHO, the companies that have the worst service are the ones that constantly talk about their network. AT&T is a bastardized amalgamation of many small cellular companies that they have gobbled up and merged over the years. Same for Verizon. Both of these companies do nothing but talk about their network, but have horrible service. T-Mobile and Sprint seem to be a smoother ride.

vbsurfer: Buried for kidi talk on the title

Swampthing: You DO know that AT&T and at&t are two entirely different companies, right??

NewOntario: I Got a Nokia N75 from them. It’s says “Cingular on the face of the device, on the box and on my SIM card. So I’m calling my phone a “Cingular Phone” not AT&T.

Since I have an unlimited data plan now, I’ll have to be ready for a bill that is far thicker than ever before. Just fucking great. I would start paying my bills online, but then those soulless zombies at AT&T would have my credit card number.

I miss those days before Cingular was slayed and sucked dried by the evil blue sphere. “Orange Guy” I will miss you.

Damn.

cwcentral: Who knew the iPhone’s failure was neither the iPhone nor Apple.

This goes to show where the bottleneck (AT&T) in technology is nowadays. Infrastructure of not, it took less than 10yrs to goto the moon, it should be faster to upgrade an infrastructure. Thank the old businessmen of the establishment, telco MBAs, and the politicians who support them.

cwcentral: who knew the failure of the iPhone wasn’t the iPhone nor Apple.

This goes to show where the bottleneck (cough: AT&T) is in technology these days. Thanks the old-guard business men and MBAs in the telcos…

superKduper: Steve Jobs doesn’t care about the environment. He cares about locking up the cell phone, music, and computer business, and shoving drug and hip-hop culture down the throats of American youth, while making them deaf with overloud iPods

jthomp: Buried as lame. Opt out of paper billing.

cyrus007: This gives me ideas about a new ad for iPhone :)

therearenorules: that’s how all cingular/at&t wireless bills are, not just iPhone bills.

nakile: I bet this would have about 700 diggs if iPhone and Xbox wasn’t in the title.

It’s nothing new or special to the iPhone. Tons of companies do it. Not to mention you can just call them and tell them to stop it.

jonj: this is what the online only billing plan is for..

Apple Beats Microsoft at its Own Open XML Game

August 11, 2007

IceBurrgApple’s release of iWork ‘08 this week is embarrassing, not for its maker, but for Apple’s rival, Microsoft Corp.”This was the ultimate insult to injury,” Gartenberg said. “Not only has Microsoft not delivered the ability to read and write Open XML in its Mac Office, but at the end of the day, Apple was the one who delivered.[...] Thanks to IceBurrg for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1415Diggs).

What other users say about this:

jabberwolf: Just a thought? Comparing this with a new format basically instituted by Microsoft, to a product Microsoft has not released yet?
Wow Macfans using an OPEN SOURCE and amazed they can do it. Hmm no wonder MS has the markets and Apple does not.
That’s why its open source guys!!

nashashmi: management has gone very awry at Microsoft. what could explain such lateness.

Don’t blame Microsoft! This is the result of opensource. Microsoft must admit.

hoyanf: All good thing’s do come to an end…
For every beginning there’s an ending…
For every new born there’s death…
It’ll depends on how fast it’ll go…

Document standard that still stands till todate is PDF…

dragonopolis: Please People…..

Comparing iWorks08 suite is like trying to compare Microsoft Works to Word. That said……..

iWorks08 is a very nicely laid out Desktop Publish/Word processor for the price and target market. I like Apple’s take UI design.

Basically what I am saying is if Apple can do this good of a job on a Consumer Home Office Suite I probably would probably be blown away by their Profession Edition if they ever did release one. Microsoft could never get it right with Works which quite literally sucked so they just convinced every home owner that they needed to buy the Microsoft Word/Microsoft Office Suite which is way more than any home owner needs.

For those trying to compare Numbers to Excell that is stupid. Numbers wasn’t designed for speed it was designed for simplicity and easy of use something that is more important the average user. If you need that much power in an office suite then wait for Microsoft’s next release for the Mac.

In a way, I believe that iWorks is sort of a warning to Microsoft. Basically Apple’s telling Microsoft that they can fill the low/mid end office segment in software better than They can and sort of giving Microsoft an “Idea” on where they would go if they did decide to compete. I believe that is why Microsoft still supports the Office Mac side. Microsoft really doesn’t want Apple to step in that “Pro” category. Apple does software pretty good and seems to have a better grasp at User Interfaces compared to Microsoft. Plus Apple doesn’t seem to have any problem supporting any file format in their software.

Matter of Fact, I would be surprise if Apple doesn’t already have a backup plan should that a “Pro” need arise.

That said, Microsoft Office has a huge loyal following and a big advertising name. Apple saves a ton of Advertising Dollars as well as development costs/headaches. Serves both Apple’s and Microsoft’s interests to provide a Mac version of Office.

Sidzilla: There are a couple of reasons that Microsoft hasn’t shipped a product with Open Document support for the Mac yet. First, whatever Microsoft ships is the defacto standard, and it’s up to everyone else to try and work around that. Like it or not, that’s just the way it is. Second, the Office version of Mac is the red headed step child at the picnic, no one wants or cares about it. It’s a pain in the ass to port it over to a Mac version, so they only do it once every four yeas or so. Does this let down Microsoft’s Mac users? They don’t care. 20% of their market will still have to buy it or be incompatible with the 96% of the world that uses Microsoft products. Is all this a good thing? No. Microsoft needs to be taken down a notch to reignite competition and innovation in it’s software products. The best thing for Microsoft would be if another office package became popular. Look at all the good Firefox did for IE7. Good luck to Apple and any other software company that can give Microsoft a run for it’s money.

Ossuary: Me thinks that the finger hath flippeth…

threemagic: I’m sure when MS made XML the standard for Office and other platforms had to conform, they thought to themselves.. we should feel embarrassed.

whiteyMcBrown: Please stop writing MS with a dollar sign (M$).. it’s not clever. Yes… they have a lot of money. “But will it blend?” is also finished. Besides all that, I’d consider myself a pretty average user (read: not power user) when it comes to office suites and I’m using iWork ‘08 at home, now… For me, It’s fantastic! I’m not sure what other people are doing with their spreadsheets and word processors but a suite like this for $79 (CDN) is absolutely awesome. I think Microsoft should include a toggle in Office to switch from “crazy.. too many options at once” to “simple”. To be fair, my work PC doesn’t have the new office suite with the Ribbon, yet; It may fix my usability problems with MS Office.

mirzar: Well i really dont think this is going to effect Microsft – i mean would you bother caring about 5 percent of the market?
with that said, however it seems that microsoft is slowing down its growth

ghall: Microsoft couldn’t care less about the Mac. They just need to make something until there agreement with Apple expires, the I guarantee, they are gone. Apple is now a serious threat to Micro$ofts market-share, and by phasing out Office:Mac, they could kill a lot of potential sales for the Mac. I think Apple realizes that, and they are in the perfect position for Mac to be taken seriously as an office platform with the iWork ‘08.

McDavies: When does the 5 year agreement between MS and Apples start. Office 08 may be the only release

ascotan: Have iWork 08. Numbers is nice, but it’s still not quite up to Excel’s speed of dealing with huge data sets. I routinely work with 4meg tab-delimited files and Numbers is slow compared to excel.

That being said – it’s nice to have a office replacement that is not Microsoft. Been struggles with spreadsheet for a while now.

Microsoft’s ‘bloatware’ is being delay because it takes time to recode 10 million lines written using MFC. Not surprising really. $80 for an office suite from apple? Check please!

nabilanwar: I am very happy with Keynote and use Pages when i’m taking notes in class. However I write my papers with Word to be on the safe side. MS Office 08 on Mac scrnshots look pretty sexy, hopefully it functions well too when it comes out.

cinmachina: The sooner you learn that apple doesn’t beat microsoft at anything but selling peripheral devices, the better off you’ll be.

rec0m: Has anyone actually tested this feature before they post about it all over the net? Last time I tried to open a .docx file with Pages ‘08 I get “The xml document isn’t in Word format.” which is ironic because I just saved the file in Word 07.

Mr. Jobs, please open up the Apple TV

August 11, 2007

luckkAn open letter to Steve Jobs requesting a development kit for the Apple TV.[...] Thanks to luckk for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 58Diggs).

What other users say about this:

keyboardduder: I digg, but I would have to agree with the majority here that there is no business-reason in opening it. And thats all Apple is anymore right? Crafty and stylish business practices disguised as hip, pop culture. Although nobody wants to buy Apple TV, and nobody has a damn clue of what it actually is, there is no sure-bet money in it. A few nerds would buy one and mod it, then theres no more money for apple after that. Steve would rather make you buy one of his computers to do the same thing and more as an opened Apple TV for about 5-10X more than the price of the Apple TV. Opening the Apple TV would be a profitless decision as much as I’d like it to happen too.

meshman: “Apple TV is a closed system”

Exactly. How naive of you to even think of writing the letter. Once Steve’s done laughing at it, he’ll wipe his ass with it. He can’t have you using the Apple TV as a universal device. No no, you have to buy your media from the iTunes store. You’re not playing your DVD’s and you’re not playing your DivX content either. Apple doesn’t sell that. You will buy what Apple says you can buy and you will play that content where Apple says you can play it. Now go ask for an iPhone SDK. Steve needs more toilet paper.

kenvsryu: Hhahahaha so you’ve never heard of Apple before?

shmatt: appletvhacks.net wants AppleTV opened up? Shocking.

luckk: Thanks, vault. There is already a not-so-official BackRow development kit by Alan Quartermain, which makes developing plugins for the Apple TV much easier. But it is still a hack.

vault: Dugg for a good cause, but I think an AppleTV SDK would be on the backburner for Apple unfortunately, given everything else they’re working on.
