Latest Macs come with 1.3 megapixel iSight camera

August 13, 2007

titlesaysitallBoth the new iMac and the Santa Rosa MacBook Pro have built-in iSight cameras that support a maximum resolution of 1280×1024.[...] Thanks to titlesaysitall for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 739Diggs).

What other users say about this:

GriesChase: The first step towards vice is to shroud innocent actions in mystery, and whoever likes to conceal something sooner or later has reason to conceal it.

okto: We knew this MONTHS ago. Buried because not news.

kickasspodcast: Yay and my 50 dollar nokia phone has a better camera yay! Hope it takes video unlike the iphone ffs
Bury this iSpam

peterman81: Where’s the word “revolutionary”?

zezerik: is this supposed to be bad news or good news? cause if that isn’t a typo that should read gigapixel… then who gives a shit

Topher06: Wow …. and? So does my cell phone and my 2 year old laptop I use at work. Next people will report that the new iMac and MacBooks come with a power cable and on/off button.

justdecent: Breaking News: Your friends were right, buying an iSight was a waste of money!

dignon: Gotta love all the MS fanboy quips. “Oh, this is SO low compared to my stand-alone camera!” WAAAAaaaaaaa!

Well, DUH!!!!!! Its a Frackin WEB CAM, you idiots. Most PCs *don’t even include a webcam as standard equipment*. Not to mention that PC webcams are usually 352×288 rez. and 15 fps. Not hi-rez, full motion capture. Gawd, you’re all such idiots… oh right, that’s why you still use PCs.

Finally, this is NOT news. Apple thinks its SO important that they don’t even list the specs for the camera on their web page… again, because its a WEBCAM. The only reason anyone is digging this story is just to piss off all the windows whiners. I did.

gta0012: Apple fanbois will some how turn this into an amazing feat of engineering. Dell’s $900 laptops have better web cams with built in + internal mic’s + headphones and they didn’t throw a stupid ass “i” in front of it. I swear if it was called the iHolocaust Apple fanbois would support it.

CompTechNSX: Buried for lack of exclamation points and use of BREAKING or AMAZING in title. (okay, this is lame)

eburetto: Can I put an Apple sticker on my toilet and call it iPoop?

tedc: Well, the article says iChat still runs at 640×480, which is just as well. It’s hard to get even that over a net connection. I guess the 1280×1024 mode would be for recording video podcasts then?

waterdrop: The new Dell Inspiron 1520/1720’s come with 2.0 MP cameras built in. And they throw in some Creative noise-canceling headphones too with it.

fiftycents: so? my new dell has a 2.0 megapixel camera… and thats still not very good. i’m amazed they were able to even make worse anymore.

buried for lame as hell

KillerX: Dugg to piss on all the whinners.

The Madness Begins with a 300-Page AT&T Bill for iPhone

August 13, 2007

bluetrevianJustine Ezarik has just got her first iPhone bill. Three. Hundred. Pages. See the video after the jump.[...] Thanks to bluetrevian for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 2180Diggs).

What other users say about this:

sigepjedi: Holy insanity batman…. I wonder what some stats are on bill sizes from AT&T!!!!

>That’s roughly 1000 texts a day
BUT… Twitter and other similar services, or even her friends, could be sending serious texts to her. This could easily bump a text count into the thousands….

cablehead: Hey check this out, iJustine could have paid off her iPhone and contract with this video: http://www.digg.com/apple/How_to_get_an_iPhone_including_the_2_year_contract_for_free

diggernaught: 30000 TXT! must be doing some adult biz/txt/pic distru for sure, she can pay that bill

joe361: The bitch has crazy eyes like her, http://tinyurl.com/88hrv.

danjal: jesus, i’m drowining in a sea of nerd druel!

lyrancorporal: iPwned.

oliver75482: This Is SPARTA!!!

pugetsound98406: http://www.mommypackmylunch.com/winter.php

So Hawt!

NewOntario: I wonder if me and my Unlimited Data Plan on my Nokia N75 could create a bill that requires a cardboard box. Aww… what the hell.

The Phone Bill Size War is on!!!

gtapro92: she has the same eyes as me lol

Yeknom: now thats what I call XBOX HUEG

Zeita: How is that humanly possible to send 30,000 texts in 1 month? I mean honestly. Why would you even need to do that? and Why would you not just pick up the phone?

emirhan: I think it is completly BS, when you choose the ebilling option. Somehow all the savings from paper, ink, postage goes directly into AT&T’S pockets. They should have pass the savings to the consumer and save the forests. Greedy bastards.

InstantLiving1: She’s a media biatch, trying to be the next rocketboom. Has anyone seen her standing in line for the iPhone? Those videos sucked so much. Now she has another moment with her phone bill.

rimmel: Jesus, yeah she’s hot… maybe she shouldn’t have been texting her 16 boyfriends 200 times per day without unlimited texts on her plan…

Skype on iPhone. No, seriously.

August 13, 2007

FoofySHAPE Services, a Stuttgart, Germany-based company well known for making mobile IM clients has just announced Skype for iPhone, an iPhone optimized website that allows you to access Skype via the browser on the iPhone. You can try out this for free for a limited time.[...] Thanks to Foofy for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1644Diggs).

What other users say about this:

snap326: Hmm, i am not a lover or hater of the iphone i guess if already didnt have 3 phones i would think maybe of getting one.. then again i already have a blackberry and 2 other cheap-o phones. For now i will stick to my buddies asterisk box over in the uk….

GuneyTatar: İ guess they have it in SHAPE because it belongs to NATO and it is used as a military base.

marcomc2: I Love Germany.

StiGUP: maybe it’s me…or maybe it’s the article. But this site seems to show that skype im plus voice is available in beta for the iphone..give it a look guys you be the judge
http://www.shapeservices.com/en/products/details.php?product=skype&platform=none

tehtuxpenguin: Still..we need Wi-fi. No Wi-fi, iPhone is dead. Too bad iPhone does not support 3G.

websyndicate: DevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopersDevelopers

BWhaler: unbelievably cool.

zdiggler: I had a website that work together with a program, How its work is, you goto their website submit the number you want to call, its connect to your PC which running Skype+The software. Your PC then make a Skype call to number you want and your phone number on conference call, you can make international calls with skype rate. But you will be using up your skype out credits thought.

Real Skype on the phone be, you use the built in mic and speaker to use phone, I don’t think iphone browser Safari have access to the mic on the phone which could be a huge security hole.

ATJxTPB: I don’t get it… Isn’t the iPhone made for VOIP? I mean, my iPhone has been on Skype for over a year now…

Blastermega: I wonder how many people this “development” will appeal to. Unless you are using an alternate SIM card with a cheap Data plan (required for use of this Web-based app) and want to say about 10-20 bux on the voice/msging, then this is just a casual development. (Or a target of flaming because the story has “iPhone” in the name)

angelleye: Just like all the other features I’ve seen on the iPhone…I’ve been using Skype on my PPC6700 for more than a year now. Or at least since however long ago it was that Skype released Skype Mobile. Why is it that Apple people think these are new features just because it’s a new Apple product? Really makes me laugh.

condormcs: …but its an iPhone!…

Lazyboy0172: I thought it was a joke until I saw “no, seriously” in the title. Thanks!!!

jabberwolf: Great service for a mediocre phone !!

morphie: I have skype and 3G on my notebook. Does it make it better than the iPhone?

7 Reasons Why Keeping the iPhone Locked Down is Stupid and Arrogant

August 13, 2007

sepultura“The iPod is a locked down device when it comes to easily adding software. you’ll know that with some trickery (ok, a lot of trickery) you can do things like install Linux on the iPod, and customize the interface somewhat. But all of these changes are hacks, outside the purview of the typical Apple consumer. Which leads us to the iPhone.”[...] Thanks to sepultura for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 727Diggs).

What other users say about this:

turbovince: Unfortunetaly, business is not simple as “it’s my device, let me do whatever I want with it”.

gailwin: 3. Arrogant Reason #3: Its like Verizon. And people hate Verizon

HAHA!!!! THIS IS SOO TRUE!
If Apple wanted to lock down the fucking iPhone, why didn’t they deploy it on the lockdown carrier itself: Verizon?

It’s MY device. Let me do what I WANT with the bloody thing!

Same thing with the GSM Locking shit. I own the bloody device. Let me use it how i want to.

batmant: Arrogant? Apple? Nahhhh…

whiteyMcBrown: I don’t understand the amount of complaining.. If you don’t like what this device has to offer, buy a different one. There are a lot of good phones out there. Apple’s offering is plainly laid out on the table. Don’t act like you’re worse off than before… Every other device that you loved is still out there. Think of this thing along the same lines as an iMac… Before you purchase it, understand the limitations and see if you’re willing to live within them.

dgruzew: I really don’t get all this press over a phone that plays music and has a browser. Who cares. Quit writing articles about this damn device. If you think its stupid buy a blackberry or windows mobile device – they do the same thing and more, cost less and have more software.

I am so sick of the iphone, someone should write an article about why I cant cant listen to a tech podcast or read tech blog without this damn device being discussed

dugg down cause iphone sux ass and I don’t want to hear about it anymore

hadi: and unlock it now ,here is a HOWTO:http://hadi.wordpress.com/2007/08/14/iphone-unlocked/

fuzzywitman: I can see why it’s stupid but arrogant? Dugg down just for the retarded title.

mikesown: They’re almost positively developing an SDK as we speak. Apple isn’t stupid- it knows what its customers want. The problem with developing an SDK is that it’s tough. Apple doesn’t have to just maintain the API bearly enough for its own programs to run- it has to maintain them well enough that ANY program will run without a hitch. Moreover, they have to polish their development tools. For internal development, they probably have a much more complicated system than a traditional SDK has. Additionally, they have to make up documentation. For the limited number of applications which they made in house, they probably didn’t need (much) documentation. But to create, document, and maintain a stable API is hard work. Much harder than most people think.

It’s also not something that should be rushed. If Apple released their internal SDK towmarrow, you can bet that people would instantly start creating apps the day it came out. What happened if Apple then decided it wanted to deprecate a large portion of the APIs a month from when it was released. Developers would be very mad at Apple: “What!??! I spent a month and hired 5 people to develop my application and NOW you say I have to rewrite half of it?”

Apple probably wants to have a stable API that works well along with tools to support it. I applaud them for taking their time in this matter, as it is one for which a lot of time is required.

turbovince: Buried for redundant as fuck. Nothing new in there.

THEMACGOD: It’s their first god damn phone… let them make sure they’ve got it right before they let everyone in with potentially damaging software.

This won’t even be an issue in a year’s time.

liuping: I’ve had various smart phones over the years, but whether it’s Palm OS based or MS Mobile, once I start add even a few simple apps, they get unstable.

I think Apple will release a widget SDK at some point, but not until they have it so tightly secure that it cannot cause any problems with the over all function of the phone.

The main market for the iPhone is not the hackers, and gear heads. it’s meant to be the smart phone my mom would like and use. and in that regard it is succeeding.

jeffyjones: This and other similar opinions lack context. I can say with a great deal of certainty that the reason this is a closed platform is because of technical concerns, namely keeping the phone a stable platform. Most people who write code know this is the case, and while they might be frustrated with it, they understand it.

What it most certainly is not, as some will imply, is some kind of goofy power game on the part of Apple.

xqb4dpx: do you think ALL the cellphone companies in the world want to implement Visual Voicemail?

techmaster7b: 1 reason for buying the iPhone, ignorance.

havesometea: It isn’t stupid and arrogant from a support perspective. Unlocking it would allow all sorts of stupid things to be done on the phone to which the stupid end user with call support and say…”muh phone be’s broken”…and when the tech support person tries to figure out what is wrong they find the stupid end user installed who knows what on their phone.

Review: Apple’s new 24-inch iMac (aluminum)

August 13, 2007

koregaonpark“The mid-2007 overhaul of Apple’s iconic desktop is the first true evidence of a switch in Apple’s design direction since the company’s switch to Intel processors. But while it represents two steps forward in terms of ergonomics and performance, pro users may find the iMac taking one step backward.”[...] Thanks to koregaonpark for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1012Diggs).

What other users say about this:

chrismag1979: Your 20-inch monitor would be useless once you upgraded your computer after 2-3 years. I even compare this with my Macbook and i’d prefer it better because that iMac is just like a freaking laptop where you cannot upgrade and the monitor is stuck.

Ndric: Funny how even the legit criticisms are dugg down here.

jockser: Do they give special gay discount ?

Ilikesheep: The new iMac is fantastic! I’m buying 12 just so I can cuddle them and whisper sweet nothings at them. I’m also going to put ‘Intel Inside’ stickers all over them. Oh yes ………. :P

mooboy322: sweet

Konstantinopol: I really wanted to buy one of these but the GPU is way too mediocre to consider.

weirdlookinguy: Where is the Mac? Seriously Apple…. pull that stick out of your ass and release a tower w/ similar specs to the iMac. I hate built-in screens.

neumero4te: Aldan Malley has bad grammar.

NoSlack913: Does Apple hate your wrists? seriously a “Flat Keyboard” is sooo early 1990’s I hate typing on a laptop because the keyboard really starts to cause me wrist problems… Anyone with carpal tunnel or wrist problems try this thing?

whiteyMcBrown: I totally understand why some people wouldn’t want a glossy screen, but I have to say, as a designer, that I prefer the glossy screen (and went for it on my Macbook Pro)… it’s true that it can reflect glare in non-optimal conditions, but if you’re a designer, you should get something that will look the best when you CAN control conditions (which is most of the time, especially for a desktop). The colours are better than a matte screen. The contrast is better than a matte screen.

TriTech: One thing that Apple has missed the boat on is sound. Where is the surround sound? It is 2007, stereo doesn’t cut it.

musicbear: “…But while it represents two steps forward in terms of ergonomics and performance, pro users may find the iMac taking one step backward…”

The iMac is for home users. That big horking expensive Mac Pro tower that you hook a 30″ Cinema Display to is for pro users. So yes. A pro user buying the iMac for pro work to replace their Mac Pro tower would be a step backward – either that or they’re just a big fucking idiot.

zdiggler: My monitor lived through 5 different system builds and still solid! its a tube Sony 21″ CPD-G520 refurb 1600×1200 anything higher then that I’ll have to squint.

ModernTenshi: Anyone know a good place to buy the older model iMacs? Since I’ve been hearing the old nVidia 7600’s in the previous models are better than what’s in the newer models, I’m considering buying an older model if I can find one. Preferably the 24″ with the 256MB card.

davidrools: I never understood putting the computer in the monitor. Most monitors are still good to use after you want to replace the computer. Plus you don’t have as much choice when it comes to screen size and style, height adjustability, etc. Then you’ve got to use laptop components (memory, mobile CPU) to fit it in there (fortunately they didn’t shrink the HDD down to mobile size). And ooh you can run dual displays just like a PC but, uhoh, they won’t be at the same level unless you sit your second beauitful monitor on top of a stack of books or something. Lovely desktop.

All gripes aside, it is a pretty machine and perfectly suited to your basic desktop apps, but damn you pay a lot to do just that.

Videoconferencing on the iPhone Now Working

August 13, 2007

orelsesIt looks like video-conferencing is now working on the iPhone using the Wi-Fi connection and its built-in camera. Ken and Greg Aspeslagh hacked the application at the C-4 Developer Conference’s Iron Coder Live this weekend, winning first prize.[...] Thanks to orelses for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 842Diggs).

What other users say about this:

jabberwolf: What hack?
These are still web apps, this one just accesses your iPhone camera.
Doesn’t skype have something like this already that actually has voice from dialcom ?

Buried for iPhone story that deserves a yawn.

Masna: I like turtles.

slapded: cell phones will not be cool until there is real 30fps video conferencing

mara00jade: Can I get that guy’s phone number who made it? I’d like to video conference with him :)

Aanidaani: Kinda stupid considering the camera and display are on opposite sides.

aaronvegh: I was there at the conference when this was announced. It’s an awesome hack, but nobody should confuse it with being “video” conferencing. The system sends JPEGs between the phones, at a pretty low framerate. Anyone imagining it as a 30fps system would be quite disappointed.

Still, very, very cool, and a lot of fun. That was the whole point, after all. :-)

halik: Hah while it’s a neato coding hack, the mirror thing is just idiotic. Please just leave it as a proof of concept, who in their right mind would drop 500+ bucks on a top of the line phone that needs a mirror thing to do videoconferencing.

digitallysick: A $500.00 + dollar phone that need to be hacked to preform functions that we should of had 2 years ago. Maybe 4 years from now it will run “skype” , and have a no crippled bluetooth. Really though, i think the iphone is nice, but not for the asking price.

tucsonwc: It would be better if Apple put an actual video camera, with a higher resolution inside the iPhone.
They are already enjoying a huge markup on the hardware, why not put in a decent camera?
And one that could just use iChat and yahoo messenger and skype?

Perhaps they won’t be as stingy with the 3G version of the iPhone.

in2deep: Wow this thing does have all the tricks!

imikedaman: This new breakthrough is all smoke and mirrors.

CraigJ: The best news here is that is confirms that the hardware is capable of video capture.

bansai: iphone is not built for video conferencing
1) note the lack of frontal camera
2) note the usage of EDGE representing 2 generations behind current technologies

Ub3rg33k: While its an impressive feat, why would anyone want to videoconference on an iPhone?

thonnie: Eh? Video conferencing on GSM? Totally not worth it. 3G >>>>>> GSM

Mac mini installed in a Corvette

August 13, 2007

krnlpncPictures and video of a Mac mini installed in a 5th generation Corvette.[...] Thanks to krnlpnc for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 17Diggs).

What other users say about this:

IMacMikeG3: I want one for my bronco. That is the coolest thing I have ever seen, especially the touchscreen which I think the new iMac should have had.
