Apple’s CEO Search 10 yrs ago today; “You’d need God to get the job done”

August 14, 2007

CLIFFosakaJAPANMany thought the job was near impossible as the side bar of Apple Confidential attests:“Right now the job is so difficult it would require a bisexual, blond Japanese who is 25 years old and has 15 years’ experience”; “Apple is a company that has opportunity written all over it. But you’d need to recruit God to get it done.”[...] Thanks to CLIFFosakaJAPAN for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 22Diggs).

iPhone Gets 100% Unlocked – Works On Any Network

rolsukThe iPhone is now 100% unlocked using a Turbo SIM card.[...] Thanks to rolsuk for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 18Diggs).

What other users say about this:

frem001: would people be able to offer a service to do something like this and would you have to send your own sim card to them to get it unlocked?

dssstrkl: You means works on any GSM network, which if you’re in the US is T-Mobile or AT&T

OBKenobi: That’s good, because AT&T is evil.

iPhone No Better Than Other Handsets At Driving New Customers To AT&T

August 14, 2007

CLIFFosakaJAPANSo, I wouldn’t make too much out of this, but it is an interesting observation: Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi noted in a research piece today that the Apple (AAPL) iPhone has has been no more effective than the average cellular phone at driving new customers to AT&T[...] Thanks to CLIFFosakaJAPAN for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 21Diggs).

What other users say about this:

streak: “For starters, he point[s] out that iPhone buyers are more likely to be switchers than first-time phone purchasers, which means it is helping the company take share from its rivals.”

For starters then, I take that to mean the iPhone is better than other handsets at driving new customers to AT&T. The iPhone story is about smart phones, not mere “handsets”. Considering the cost of smart phones and their associated rate plans, it does seem unlikely that someone who doesn’t own a cell phone is going to jump straight to using a smart phone. In addition, the iPhone has a high entry level cost for the handset that many potential customers may not recognize is paid for over a 2 year contract by $20/month (plus taxes and fees) less-expensive rate plans for iPhone, thus making the iPhone device itself effectively free.

Bury inaccurate.

battletops: iPhone can drive too? Man this thing does everything.

iphone $5k horror story

August 14, 2007

adzaroomy personal iphone data roaming horror story.[...] Thanks to adzaroo for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 45Diggs).

What other users say about this:

jmalin77: So basically you were too dumb to read your contract and keep up on the policies of your cell phone carrier and when YOU screwed the pooch you get pissy cus you have to pay. What kind of moron thinks he’s going to get free web access ACROSS the friggin ocean? I mean seriously, learn to take responsibility for your own actions instead of freaking out and setting up a whiny blog on the internet about it.

FknGoAway: Why would you travel without checking the rate plans first. My wife and I were is both Canada and Ireland in the past 2 months. I called and made sure I knew exactly what the charges would be. I of course ran up my phone bill a bit, but I was aware of what it was costing me. When the bill finally came and I was $25 off in my guess of how much we used the phones. It isn’t that hard to get the information before you travel, assuming it would be all free is foolish to the extreme.

streak: This isn’t an iPhone story per se or even an Apple story, but heck we’ve got an Apple forum here so why not complain where more people will read your complaint. It’s about the costs associated with international usage of a smart phone that uses a data plan. Voice calls when roaming internationally are also more expensive, but the $0.02/KB or $20/MB typically charged for data seems to be the most surprising fee. (And don’t forget to add taxes and regulatory fees on top of this). I doubt AT&T international roaming rates differ much from other carriers.

Buried in the description of the fees for international roaming is language that says you will be charged not just for the data bytes you’d expect, but you will also be billed for a variable, unspecified number of overhead bytes. Conceivably a 20 KB e-mail message could be inflated with overhead bytes to 200 KB, which would cost $4 (plus taxes and fees).

vvillovv: Seems like the mobile phone companies arn’t ready to let people become fullly mobile

mtzlblk: I have worked with all the major carrier before and they enforce on partners a strict policy of warning users about data usage and instructing them to be sure they have a data plan. It sucks that they changed the roaming policy and didn’t inform users and allowed them to rack up that kind of bill. They should actually implement some sort of system that sends a user s text message if they hit $100.00 of usage in a month, since signing up for a monthly plan would cost a lot less and anything over that amount would seem excesssive.

DrunkenBatman goes on racist tirade at C4 Mac dev conference

August 14, 2007

AmazingSycoAt the C4 Mac developer conference this weekend, Drunken Batman got on stage to discuss why black people don’t use Macs. To quote some of the conference attendees, ‘SOMEONE NEEDS TO STOP THIS ASS!’ and ‘this warrants a walkout’.[...] Thanks to AmazingSyco for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 584Diggs).

What other users say about this:

reddcell: Next year’s speaker will be me and the opening title will read “Mac users don’t have an F’ing sense of humor.”

Aichon: One account of the panel where the alleged racist comments took place:
http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/383/drunkenbatman-is-not-a-racist

Sounds like it might not be as black and white as some would believe.

DonJuanMAC: I don’t feel it is an issue that should be dragged on. MACs are the best computer systems on the market!!

fvjohnson: Apple needs new “I’m a Mac…” commercials. The PC should be played by Sam Jackson, the Mac could be Cramer.

macdimeno1: ClintLugert: That song is fucking funny! My new theme song even! Lets also add all the stupid muthafuckas who say this isn’t racist to the ass beating list! Please! Talking bout…”He was just making and observation.” Who in the hell sits around and thinks of stupid shit like what racial group uses what OS and brand of computer. I think some of you really don’t know what racism is!!! It just goes to show that there really are a bunch of stupid muthafuckas on this planet!

rexprime: what he should have said is average people don’t use macs(ipods/iphones don’t count), 90% of the homes i am in on a daily basis are pc homes. Do i find the comment racist no, i do find it pointless yes… and yes i am a black man

serpicolugnut: It’s pretty sad the morons here who are convicting DB haven’t read the account of what happened. Making an (incorrect) observation about the cultural makeup of the Mac user base is nowhere near racist. But in the Digg world, all that matters is a sensational headline so you can get your Diggs.

I’m no fan of DB, but I’m even less a fan of idiots who cry racism when there isn’t any.

fuzzy76: This is totally wrong, and the slide had nothing to do with racism. It was a badly chosen example. Buried for inaccuracy.

ClintLugert: I just keep hearing this song by Wesley Willis in my mind:
http://www.benquilter.com/files/I%20Whupped%20Batman%20Ass.mp3

macdimeno1: I’m black! I own 5 Macs. I converted my fiance, her mom, her brother, my mom, my brother, my 3 sisters, at least 5 of my friends and countless people who I have met in passing, to mac (all black)! I went to a historically black collage, Howard University, where they put in a 2 story computer lab with over 100 G5’s in 2002. I just found out this summer they have updated it with over 40 new intel iMacs. In class, most notes are being clicked on mac portibles. I laterally know of thousands of African Americans in a very small area that use Macs heavily.

This guy probably doesn’t have any friends, let alone black friends! If he did, he would have gotten beat up before his transition to that slide was complete. This is also a sad day for the mac community. Forever we have been viewed as the creative, intelligent, free thinking types. Now it shows that some of us are close minded and ignorant.

Lets just ignore this guy and not give him anymore attention than he already has gotten. I forgive him because he is ignorant.

P.S.
Though I forgive him, it is my duty as a black man who loves macs, to punch him in his muthafuckn mouth when I see him.

QueenOfSwords: I’m not sure what’s up with DB. I used to read his blog right after daringfireball.net , but he hasn’t blogged since May, and when he did, it was about beating up a fellow called “Vinay Venkatesh” http://www.drunkenblog.com/drunkenblog-archives/000767.html .
It’s seriously nutty, as in I’m actually concerned for him. Does anyone know him personally, and if so, is he on his meds and ok?

samsara1981: How are we supposed to assess this if it’s being presented so totally devoid of context?

FredB7: Inaccurate!
See: http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/383/drunkenbatman-is-not-a-racist

wonkknows: love and peace!

Apple’s new iMac Core 2 Extreme, Mac mini benchmarked

August 14, 2007

1KrazyKoreanHot on the heels of last week’s benchmarking of the 2.4 GHz iMac, the folks over at Primate Labs have updated their iMac performance comparison charts to include scores from Apple’s top-of-the line 2.8GHz iMac Core 2 Extreme, as well as the new Mac mini.[...] Thanks to 1KrazyKorean for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 715Diggs).

What other users say about this:

GreatDrok: Heh, I’m still running a 1.42Ghz G4 Mac mini which I bought when they first appeared. I upgraded it to 1GB and stuck an external firewire 3.5″ drive on it and it runs pretty sweet. I wouldn’t want to do serious number crunching on it but as a little workstation it isn’t bad and I don’t intend to upgrade it for another year at least. The performance difference between the internal 2.5″ drive and the external firewire drive is something like x4 so I run the entire operating system on there and it feels almost as quick as my MacBook Pro. Of course, it also has the advantage of not having to run Office under emulation so for that it beats the crap out of the MBP.

mleh: Hey that’s great and all, but will the 2GHz Core 2 Duo mini handle 1080p x264 content?

DaleoftheUK: So a Mac mini and an iMac weren’t carved into a bench? lame.

rowlodge: so there the same or slightly slower mac minis at least in both of today’s models, it wasn’t necessary to include G4’s or pre dual cores.

Jeeverz: picking one up, when i get back to school wewt !

shieldss: Hey Apple: how about an option for a dedicated graphics card to support dual monitors in the mini? I don’t want to use a 3rd party device that doesn’t work 1/2 the time.

waif69: It looks like I will be buying a 2GHz mini to replace my 1GHz G4 instead of waiting a few more years until the family budget gets better.

cybe: Great little machines, but I believe my Mac Mini (Core Due 1,66Ghz) is crashing due to overheating, it tends to get very hot on the bottom. Have it standing on a big chunk of metal now which seems to help, not sure yet.

Waredgo: Let’s face it – most of us expected a chart comparing these Macs to Wintel PC’s right?
I was expecting that too and still wish it was one.
I have nothing but respect for the Mac platform – if I see an apples to apples comparison between the two platforms, I’ll go with the one that makes more sense for me.

TheNevadaKid: Here’s a real world benchmark for everyone…A few days ago I set up the new 24″ iMac for a client. The display is far and away the best I’ve ever seen. Much more vibrant than my own cinema displays. It was fast, responsive and rendered a 5 minute clip on HDV video with a title, some color correction and 4 simple cross dissolves in less than a minute. It’s an obvious step up from its predecessors and does exactly what it was built to do.

The iMac is intended for home and office tasks not high end video production. I’m not sure why people complain the GPU is slow when it doesn’t neet a 70 mHz refresh rate with 160 fps. The graphics card is lower power and more efficient at what it’s intended to do – render a beautiful image for home users.

locodude: I’m so hot for a MacMini. I have absolutely no real use for one, I just want it because it looks zexy.
Can somebody please help me find a good excuse to buy one? ;-)

fanclerks: So basically this is a review of someone reading some charts off another site? Why couldn’t he just point to that site instead of trying to pretend and making content for their own? Woop de fucking do!

Shivetya: www.barefeats.com

the new systems (24″ hd2600 ATI) are slow slow slow compared to last models 7600gt

unitedkronos: Has anyone benchmarked games on the new Mac Minis yet? I want to know how well they run Half-Life 2 and CS:S so I can replace my main system with one.

MMaster23: wow .. who would have tought a faster clocked core is faster then a slower core :o

this could cure aids and cancer!
*sigh*
