Quartz Composer, like Cover Flow, is one of those cool little gems of independent Mac software that Apple has acquired. Even though they weren’t created within Cupertino, these apps have changed the way we use and even think of Mac OS X.[...] Thanks to msaleem for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 428Diggs).
What other users say about this:
McduffyAdonis: Women will forgive anything. Otherwise, the race would have died out long ago
pinchies: Ive been making my own for just over a year. Does anybody know of any forums for .qtz file sharing? – thanks in advance
NSResponder: You could also go right to Apple’s developer web site, and start with a rather better tutorial:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/GraphicsImaging/Conceptual/QuartzComposer/index.html?http://developer.apple.com/documentation/GraphicsImaging/Conceptual/QuartzComposer/qc_creating_qcp/chapter_3_section_1.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001357-CH203
-jcr
sdm011: The first videos of this podcast are video tutorials for quartz. They helped me start to learn it. http://ubergeek.churchtechtalk.com/. Also check out the Apple’s quartz programming guide if you want to learn how to turn these into native mac applications.
Quartz Programming Guide:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/GraphicsImaging/Conceptual/QuartzComposer/qc_intro/chapter_1_section_1.html
PowerCat1: Upon reading the title, I thought I was gonna read about a way to create quartz crystals
jtb4: Um, thanks for the “tutorial” that basically advertises joining your RSS feed.
veritech: I found the post before it got posted on digg, and i’ve been playing with it for an hour, i can see that it has the ability to be very powerful.
Looking forward to working it into my apps.
samsoffes: Quartz Composer has been in os x for awhile now. It’s purpose is to create and manipulate graphics in realtime. It is going to be a big part of 10.5
dgtljunglist: Making screensavers with QC is really slick, though unfortunately they do tend to run just a bit slower than native ones…
You can do stuff like pick up mic levels or the ambient light sensor. I think there was even something about MIDI control…
chiliwilli: soooo… what’s the purpose of Quartz?
elfprince13: 104 diggs and only 3 comments. i love it when that happens
seattle98104: don’t tell anyone, but you can make your own custom filters and titles with QC for iMovie …
on imoviehd.app do show package contents and find the example quartz compositions and modify and save new ones.
h3xley: I’m pretty sure Apple made Quartz Composer themselves…

Kick the crap out of Glass Joe for old time’s sake.Instructions:Throw uppercuts to the face or jabs to the stomach by tapping the screen. Dodge left or right by tapping the lower left/right corners of the screen.Tips: Tap screen *slowly* if you get knocked out. Punch opponent directly after he takes a swing to get a stun punch.[...] Thanks to Nirgaul for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 17Diggs).
What other users say about this:
Nirgaul: You can’t block, but you can dodge a punch. Tap the icons in the corners.
mrfcobf: Very cool, but how do you block!?
CAcute: Holy moly! My eyes are deceiving me. I have to find someone with an iPhone so I can see what it looks like there. Freakin’ awesome! Kudos to you!!!!!!!!!!!
coursevector: Awesome
sondun2001: Classic
conbot: Looks neat! Too bad it doesn’t run natively.

“AppleWorks’ last breath was masked by last week’s iMac, iLife and iWork announcements – Apple has discontinued the product,”[...] Thanks to titlesaysitall for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 904Diggs).
What other users say about this:
BrayanTennison: No animal is so inexhaustible as an excited infant.
romeosc: Just because they no longer support it, doesn’t mean it won’t continue performing!
I have MS Office/word /Excel and I still use Appleworks since it works better than iWork!
pantuky: Hip-hip hooray! Now if the MacOS would only follow…
CobaltScribe: I have many fond memories of the Apple II version. This was back when an 80-column display mattered and hard drives were still considered exotic and not essential. I always found humor in the message “Carefully saving file”, as if anything regarding a floppy could be done with care. It’s rather like the passing of the Model T and the typewriter. Now rarely used items, but highly significant in their day.
Solstice: Good. The whole idea of “integrated applications” was great when computers couldn’t multitask and had no UI guidelines. It used to be a total bummer to have to quit your word processor to launch your spreadsheet. However, now that multitasking is ubquitous, a bunch of smaller apps can easily take the place of one giant application.
froggiestone: I LOVE the new imovie editor from apple. really awesome, and im not even a fanboy.
You can see the whole 1 hour keynote (the imac one) on apples HP somewhere.
naio: LOL, Crappleworks.
8bit_Hero: did dvorak predict this?
spiderworm: Nothing is official until Netcraft confirms it.
robwilkens: Anyone taking bets on how many years (or months) till they pronounce iWork to have no more iLife?
dagamer34: iWork still needs some work. No database program or drawing/painting app.
Mattman723: Now I’ll never recover those files from my iMac G3…
Diggernaut: I’m still mourning MacWrite
BLACKEAGLE: isheep freaks
ascotan: Released in 1984?? And its still around??
God it should have died 15 years ago.

If Mac owners were feeling left behind by all the upgrades Skype[...] Thanks to maheshee11 for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 658Diggs).
What other users say about this:
corrosion: And still they didn’t make a GNU/Linux version with support for video!
pixeldust: Me and some others seem to have a problem with this beta not correctly displaying our contact lists. If I have mine set to show my address book contacts when I restart Skype it only shows my address book contacts and nothing else unless I fiddle with it, then if I restart it the settings don’t seem to be saved. If I disable show address book contacts then it works fine.
miniboss: Does this have the video conference recording that they added to that last Windows beta?
ffleming: sweet, i was hoping for some blogspam
yeahbuddy: nm
astrosmash: Do they still have that free Skype-to-phone deal going on, or is it just Skype-to-Skype now?
corsairstw: Skype for mac has video…
Eagon: pretty lame tbh, I don’t need integration with address book, I need video
Labonline: This upgrade imports your address book contacts. This is a nice feature
mywhitenoise: Fuck Skype, I deleted that application as soon as they started charging for local calls.
TheKorn2: SO THE FUCK WHAT? Seriously, WHO GIVES A SHIT??!? It’s a *point upgrade*. WHOOPIE-DAMN-DOO!
Dhalgren: I want a command line skype that ties into my asterisk server… Get working on that.
allywilson: Where, oh where, is my VIDEO CONFERENCING?! I’ve been waiting a long, long time – and still nothing!
theholotrope: Direct linkage:

akanights: Mmmhhh… and linux ?

You can clearly find their design mojo in the new iMac as well as in other modern design pieces, like Telefunken’s own flat TV panel or Loewe’s Xelos, which many people could mistake with the new iMac from a distance. The flat Telefunken and Loewe, however, don’t capture the classicism of the the old 614 curves, its retro charm.[...] Thanks to orelses for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 25Diggs).
