Gaming on the Mac: once maligned, now showing signs of improvement

August 18, 2007

ZaphodBDon’t look now, but gaming on the Mac may finally amount to something more than a joke. With the official launch of EA’s new Mac gaming titles, Apple eyes a chance to bolster the platform’s appeal.[...] Thanks to ZaphodB for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 18Diggs).

What other users say about this:

tobikow: But hey, its still doing better than vista.

totorototoro: Its pretty obvious that Steve Jobs isn’t interested in gaming on the Mac (Joust not withstanding) or even the iPod. (Go back and watch his presentation of the Games for iPod last year-he can barely hide his contempt :p )

And, if Steve Jobs isn’t interested, it just isn’t going to happen. In other words, look forward to more low end graphics cards and integrated graphics solutions in the future :p

Apple recommends iTunes 7.2 with Windows Vista update KB936824

ashishmohtaIf you are getting message while connecting ipod and asking for update, check out the Vista update[...] Thanks to ashishmohta for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 25Diggs).

What other users say about this:

ilkeryoldas: iTunes + Vista = bound to fail?

Apple Bootcamp gets better

August 18, 2007

NakamotoMicrosoft employee blogs: “I think all my future PCees will be Macs.”[...] Thanks to Nakamoto for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 1830Diggs).

What other users say about this:

dandonia: I really want a mac

swean: Apple will never have my money, period.

SlipGreen: i love the troll-tastic arguments of “OMFG IT CANT PLAY GAMEZZZZZZZZZ”
…if we can play both mac and pc games that argument is no longer valid

EPIC FAIL

mac pro pcs offer power users upgradable aspects to work on their rig…
…so you can put in that new card you want…

EPIC FAIL

seriously, 18 year olds that have an entire view based off of imac ads on the internet should own one or age about 5 years before posting “OMFG NO GAMEZ OR RAM UPGRADZ LAWLW!”

canthraxp: Apple users: Functionality == bling bling

Shootfast: The volume buttons look exactly the same as they do on ubuntu

stevejobber: Too much hate on apple at digg. Go to http://www.macintoshr.com instead. Great Apple related digg style site.

PDG1: buried for being a lame story
Graphics are cool and all… but bootcamp isn’t made from good graphics
I really fail to see how this got dugg so many times…
I’m really not much of an apple fan… I don’t so much hate macs as I do the people who use them. I don’t like the Mac mentality.
it’s like people don’t care HOW it works… as long as it looks pretty
windows drivers are cool 2…
Windows has had them for a while now:P

sdlvx: God you macfags it’s a fucking bootloader. WOOP DE FUCKING WOOOO.

Rileyper: WAIT…so what the hell is the improvement

dragonopolis: Just because Steve Jobs is too damn stubborn to give one of the Largest Consumer Entertainment/Uses for a computing device (which is Gaming if you don’t know) doesn’t make it a bad OS just a “very good narrow minded ” OS.

So it is nice that Apple at least gives it customers who do love gaming an option to install an OS that does give Gamers some love.

Poor Stevey. If he only new the rush of adoption Macs would have if he supported Gamers on the hardware side (mid tier Pro or Very High Consumer model) as well as the software side (Give Developers Apple’s version of a DirectX or OpenGL and give the game developers some love which in turn will give Mac users and Gamers who want to go to Mac but don’t want to hassel with Multiple OSes some love also).

Or maybe that is why Apple doesn’t Support Gamers. The burden of all those switchers (assuming Apple did it right here folks) would put a poor strain on their hardware and even software development they prefer to just let Microsoft be the game OS and Apple can stay Small.

CosbyKillah: i have always been a fan of having 2 OSs on one computer it is more efficient then spending twice the amount of money on 2 computers when you can have one computer run both windows and mac, simply put the idea is genius and the easier and less buggy the entire ordeal get the better

qwerty69: I dugg this because Bootcamp is a good technology, but I hope nobody is implying that the drivers are perfect?

Am I the only person to press Alt F4 to try and close an application only to have the Volume decrease instead.

Apple a little more negative testing next time please.

sdlvx: Fucking macfags. The article consisted of

“The volume glyphs look pretty.”

“New windows front end gives you lots of functionality.”

What the fuck, there’s like 3 options on the whole boot camp thing. Are you macfags this fucking stupid that as soon as you see something beyond drag and drop or checking boxes, that it impresses you?

And what the fuck how is this one of the most dug stories? I think the volume thing is pretty gay. Who the fuck needs a giant translucent icon to take up half of your screen when you change the volume? It’s HUGE! And then it makes that cumdrop sound when you change it (I know, my sister has a mac) which is the most obnoxious sound i have heard in my life.

I swear I’m so tired of you macfags running around. Why don’t you buy an OS that is actually coded, and not some shitty compilation of FOSS software and Jobs and fatass Woz jizzing over the iFace for a year because that’s all they have to do is make things look pretty.

DIE MACFAGS.

If this retard is going to switch to OSX because of pretty volume controls and a watered down shitty windows utility, he’s a dumb fuck. I really don’t care, because if most of the people in the CS field are this retarded, It’s all going to be like a walk in the park for me.

subtle: It’s so tragic that this lameass article made the front page just because it said: OMFG Mac FTW!!!

Memnochxx: I think the solution for the trackpad is not to use it, get a thinkpad, and use a trackpoint. There. A trackpoint and 3 mouse buttons. It’s the best setup.

iPhone Apper: Add iPhone web apps to the main menu

August 18, 2007

koregaonpark“Tired of going all the way to MobileSafari on your iPhone to use web apps that were built with the “sweet” iPhone SDK? Provide iPhone Apper with a URL, name, and icon… and iPhone Apper will provide you with an application to install onto your iPhone.”[...] Thanks to koregaonpark for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 594Diggs).

What other users say about this:

yesman4v: this is my comment

andycr512: When I read the title I saw “iPhone RAPper…”

I really didn’t need that mental image this early on.

vvaduva: I just refuse to run jailbreak on my phone – I can see it coming…version 1.2 coming out bricking all jailbreaked iphones. I can’t get myself to take that risk

dansmeek: oh shit. i thought i broke my iphone! not from this app, but from jailbreak. all in all (w/debugging and such) I may have jailbreaked my phone over 100 times. What’s worse is I had two apps (terminal and lights) that would have proved I voided my warranty Jailbreak failed, and then lost connection with my iPhone. iTunes did not recognize it. I could turn it off and on (sort of, it took 2 minutes for it to turn on, and while graphics were displayed, they were not able to be manipulated). Lots of solutions I tried. I then hoped that connecting the phone to itunes in recovery mode would work. Thank god. The first time I tried it, it did not work – i don’t know why. Second time it did. I found it weird cuz iPhone wan’t even registering with the iTunes. Only iActivator could even telling I was attemping to connect it.

So basically, I think that if you use jailbreak enough times, you’re phone might get fucked. I am going to be more careful and use that program less. The iPhone was very weird….. it was running at about 1/100th of the speed. I’m putting my ringtones on, a few apps, and then just letting it be until apple gives a real update.

I still think Apple would refund the phone if I had managed to break it. It would be bad PR.

krokodil: Vote for this feature, so Apple may add it:

http://iphonewishlist.net/story.php?title=Home_screen_Allow_users_to_modify_it

I know, they are reading this site

mobilehavoc: So fucking lame…so I have to hack my iPhone through an elaborate process to allow me to even install this and all I get is the ability to add 3 BOOKMARKS on my homescreen. Because clicking bookmarks in Safari is so fucking difficult.

This has to be THE lamest iPhone tool ever.

pr5owner: what if you add to many icons to fit on the home screen? how do you scroll? flick the screen?

websyndicate: freaking sweet. Thanks for the open platform Steve Jobs

wowatmz: http://www.wowatm.com

battletops: There is no reason Apple couldn’t have allowed at least this.

Rice: I don’t even have one, but this excites me.

alexkehr: Using this or any other third party app will terminate the warranty, right?

PhrosTT: since when can u install stuff w/out hacking it?

A 300-page iPhone Bill?

August 18, 2007

ironblackiPhone owners getting their first AT&T wireless bills have been posting videos and complaining on message forums about bills as thick as Moby Dick that detail every call, every text message, every moment spent on the EDGE network.[...] Thanks to ironblack for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 30Diggs).

What other users say about this:

streak: I use my iPhone a hell of a lot for web and e-mail – 10X as much as my previous Windoze Mobile and Treo smart phones, because Safari actually works! My (paper) bills are rather small. I don’t use SMS at all.

kajoob: And if they didn’t, the same people would be screaming, “What is AT&T hiding from us?!?!”. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Just log on here: https://www.wireless.att.com/ , and then on the very first page you see, click “Sign up for paperless billing”. Not only did you just save a tree, but we don’t have to see these same whiny dupes on digg anymore. Win/Win!!

Got a fresh Mac? Start HERE

obeezyNot having most of these tools is like having half a Mac.[...] Thanks to obeezy for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

Photoshop CS3
CandyBar
Google Notifier
iSereal Reader

and of course… UNO. :)

stevejobber: Too much hate on apple at digg today. http://www.macintoshr.com is a great Apple related digg style site.

mdman: You mean, Apple does not supply all you need? for all that money you pay?

datdamonfoo: Let me be the first to say that having a complete Mac with all these tools is still like having half a PC.

Kyderdog: Text Edit Plus is my favorite Text editor.
http://www.tex-edit.com/
Tex-Edit Plus is a scriptable, styled text editor that fills the gap between Apple’s bare-bones SimpleText and a full-featured word processor. It’s fast, efficient, and has a clean, uncluttered interface. It’s also great for cleaning up text which is transmitted over the Internet.

Noobist: my god… i’ve been using a mac for a few years now and omg… these apps are friggin genious! there were quite a few i had never heard of, friggin brilliant!

maybe u shud name this “ALL MAC USERS, CLICKY OR DIE!”

wish i could digg it twice

saltedlolly: What no Growl? That should be on their list for sure…

Scorp888: Yawn…another duplicate, this was posted what 3 months ago?

C’mon, it’s not even a great list…

yabos: This is a good list. I haven’t heard of about half of these apps before even though I’ve been using OS X since 10.0 and even tried out DP3 and DP4.

escapedspecimen: kismac link is dead, and as far as I remember it doesn’t work with airport extreme…

rimantas: where is X-Chat Aqua? :(

darkmotion: so much for out of the box ;(

astride: Yes! that’s definitely right, quicksilver and adium r the best and most important, thanks for the website! i really like it, it has to be bookmarked though

ninja0: hello i am a mac: windows (aka PCs [which also means linux too??] according to the commercials.) sucks. eat it.

ryanwarnersteel: yes, but can anyone direct me to a good texas hold’em mac program??

EA Finally Delivers Those Mac Games

August 18, 2007

BLONGOYo! The Apple store finally has those Mac games EA promised this summer. This week, plenty of Mac sites (with writers who have never heard of this thing called the X-BOX) have complained about the ship delay.[...] Thanks to BLONGO for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 956Diggs).

What other users say about this:

DarkDx: Why the hell didn’t apple put 8600s or 8800s in their new iMac? I guess Jobs was in crack or something

theboozer: More games on the Mac is never a bad thing.

anarchy99: this is such crap there not native there running in cider which is a mac implentation of cedegra
if you want you can make your own games using might and magic V (or compile cedegra source which is free)
i made ea mac lineup before ea released it just cause they pissed me off pretending to support macs
heres how using need for speed carbon as a example:
1) you need and NFS Installed with no-cd Crack
2) download Heroes of Might of Magic 5 for osx
3) apply crack on it and see if is running (if it does your good to go)
4) Do show package contents on the heroes app and go to “Contents/Resources/trnasgamming/c_drive/Program Files/” and put there Your Need For Speed installed game
5) Copy this dlls from windows into c_drive/windows/system32/: d3d9_24.dll to d3d9_32.dll (you can find this dlls on the web too)
6) Open Info.plist from Contents folder and change Cedega Game dir and Name to:
CedegaGameDir
c:Program FilesElectronic ArtsNeed for Speed Most Wanted
CedegaGameName
c:Program FilesElectronic ArtsNeed for Speed Most Wantedspeed.exe

Spinney: why don’t they just dual boot and then BAM the entire Windows game catalog

bigredsk10: Will you be able to play the mac C&C3 on a LAN with a windows computer?

LMN8R: New iMac owners – have fun playing games with that piece of shit HD2600.

*still utterly baffled why MacBook Pros have a superior graphics chip to iMacs*

Septimus: Wow. Native Mac games, which aren’t actually native. Man EA sucks. Wonder how much of a performance loss there is with Cider?

nizam: for those of you complaining about the intel gma 950 issue, that damn thing can’t even support hardware transform and lighting. that right there cuts off its ability to play a majority of games.

xqb4dpx: Dugg for beginning the description with Yo!

jakelowe1: i have a Macbook Pro 2.16GHz intel core 2 duo, 2gb RAM, 128mb ATI x1600, 120gb 5400rpm, 6x DVD-DL drive, 15.4inch 1440×900.
will any of these games run smoothly and with reasonable graphics. would having 3gb of RAM instead of 2gb make a big difference?

wandomike: Mac = Not a games Machine.

skoles: So these will not work at all for the PPC Macs?

HideoKojima: A bunch of shitty games, how exciting.

Bytor: Aren’t these just packed up with some converter like wine, they are not actually coded for Mac. It would be interesting to see how much slower they are as a result.

Trat: Cool, finally we Mac users get what we deserve. Let’s show our gratitude back. I’m firing up the piratebay as I type this!
