iFuntastic v3 Released: You now have permission to go nuts

August 29, 2007

ComputerNapThe moment you’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. iFuntastic version 3 is here, and chock full of new features: PowerPC compatibility, application installation, image editing, downloading/uploading, multiple-home screens and icon re-arrangement, ringtones from iTunes and much more![...] Thanks to ComputerNap for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 800Diggs).

What other users say about this:

iLover: Anyone know how to change the screen size on the home screen? My wallpaper shows at the right and left edges. It’s kind of annoying. Thanks for the info :)

maltschul: After 1+ days of monkeying with this (and having been an iFuntastic fan since 2.0), my thoughts:
* the unshackle feature is nice: add ringtones when I want
* getting to the point of unshackle a PIA: sync iTunes, restore latest iPhone software (1.0.2) to virgin state, sync iTunes (with an 8GB phone, this is ~ an hour, plus you lose some things like Youtube bookmarks)
* adding apps is great in theory, but worthless in reality. I’ve still not found anything add-worthy (NES button response sucks, so not even that treasure from 20 years ago is any good)
* Not a fan of the Home Screen tweaks (changed names of apps to things like MobileCal and MobileMail); pages are dreadful

In short, you gain the ability to add ringtones without going through the Jailbreak thing everytime and you get 2 things you’ll likely not want to touch: Home Screen mod and adding apps. I miss my pristine Apple Home Screen. I’m now in the process of doing a full system restore and going back to iFuntastic 2.5 to add ringtones.

Mike

(One last note: this now functions with PowerPC macs. So, if you don’t have Intel, you’re only option is 3.0. Not a big issue, just stick with Ringtones IMO).

neosoul77: Thank You Lord!!!

iChainsaw: lol i went to the page and it has a picture of a car with a screwdriver with a caption saying “i’m in ur servers making things better” LMAO

coderedfilm: this new ver. has soo much wrong with it, its not worth using. I had my phone looking nice and pretty, and when i installed this, it made me restore, and now i cant get anything working the same. All my icons, all my apps, all my sounds, now gone. Skip this ver. for now. The “pages” feature is terrible.

PrinceBrand: It would be nice if they authors gave credit to the ideas and code they’ve ‘borrowed’ based on others work…

My .02 cents.
-KennX (aka PrinceBrand)

jhey: Wish there was a Windows version of this.

skottles: I wish I could digg this more than once…ive been waiting for this!

alburn: I had trouble until I moved the application to my desktop, after that it worked fine

MacParrot: Has anyone tried this using OSX86 on a generic PC? Hacking an iPhone on a hacked version of OS X with hacks of iTunes playing in the background.

But you’d probably need a hack for that.

djcraze: Working Mirror: http://www.macenstein.com/ifuntastic3mirror/iFuntastic_3.0.3.zip
As of 8:00 EDT

badjoke: The applications are listed as MobilePhone and MobileMusicPlayer, etc. Any way to keep the names simple?

Swoshmn: @zeroego
Yeah, I am sitting here still looking at the phone connected to the computer, it has been fully restored with the “iPhone is activated” text box, and have plugged/unplugged and reset the phone and application multiple times. I have iTunes disabled from syncing, and I try to “Continue” looking at the “Unshackle” screen and it sends me straight to the Troubleshooting page. I feel I have done everything right, multiple times, it just hates my pretty little friend

Je55e0wn5y0u: For some reason none of the stuff that has to do with the home screen works for me =[

Cabose: I just did the full hack.
1) you can choose not to use the “pages” function
2) I found when you do use pages, it will lock after you choose a new one
3) It looks damn nifty, but a tad slower that V2.0

iPhone hackers could face legal battle

August 29, 2007

QsKGlobalHackers have figured out how to unleash Apple’s iPhone from AT&T’s cellular network, but people hoping to make money from the procedure could face legal problems.[...] Thanks to QsKGlobal for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 35Diggs).

Rumor: iPod Hi-Fi facing end of life

August 29, 2007

1KrazyKoreanThe Apple iPod Hi-Fi is one of the stranger products that Apple has created in its 21-year history. It was first released in the spring of last year, and has been just plain out of price range for many people. Add to that the sea of cheap “good-enough sounding” alternatives and impulse buys become more difficult to justify.[...] Thanks to 1KrazyKorean for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 525Diggs).

What other users say about this:

Codee: I love Apple but always hated that thing. It was doofy.

DaveClarkOne: Probably the most uninspired thing to come out of Apple.

JuliusErving: Apple’s 21 year history? Shouldn’t it be 31 years? Surprising typo.

mrraven200: I’ll stick with my Yamaha pre-amp. 120 w/channel Yamaha power amp and Phase tech PC-80 speakers from the thrift store and pawn shop. 100 times better sound for less than half the price.

Trioxin: I would get one if they built AirTunes in. Its a feature that would really set it apart.

shieldss: The HiFi needs to become the WiFi. How great would it be to have that form factor without the need for an iPod? Stream your iTunes library, display library contents on a small screen and allow navigation with the remote. Just plug it in and it is ready to go. Make it like the Apple TV but for music.

ih8apple: I dont think this was there bigest blunder:

$99 cases that you had to take the iPod out of to see, anyone?

ausfahrt: If Bose = better sound through marketing (which it may I have no clue) then Apple = …. do i need to fill in the blank? Ok then! Apple = BETTER PRODUCT THROUGH MARKETING!!!!

steamedlice: Good. Get rid of it. It’s just eating up retail space. As a shareholder, I was very disturbed by it’s introduction. The fact that it’s a poor seller just confirms the notion that the customer is always right.

pyrates: I had a feeling this was gonna happen when Steve Jobs in his arrogance said he would replace his million dollar stereo system with one of these. Reality distortion field must have been working overtime then, and even then it didn’t help it.

bingobongony: I love how this acts like the HiFi failed becuase people figured their cheaper systems were “good enough”. No, it failed because the HiFi was just as crappy quality as those “good enough” systems, even worse, but way more expensive.

mabhatter: the trouble with the Hi-Fi is that it doesn’t do enough. It’s “only” iPod speakers and not much more. I’d love one for my living room as it’s quite small, Hi-Fi is perfect, but lacks inputs for more than 1 item at a time. If they update that thing, perhaps add AirTunes from the Airport express, they will have something cool. It’s the perfect “dorm room” match to Apple TV, iMac, and iPod, but there’s no inclusion for setting along side a TV set and DVD player or Video game system. It needs more inputs, in different types.. analog, digital coax, optical… Then it needs to secure the iPod MUCH better, so that the iPod in dock is portable.. in the present incarnation it just hangs off the top, very nice for looks, but you can’t carry it that way.
It was an “almost” product, that needs more features to be interesting.

HappyScrappy: Agreed the Hi Fi is LOUD as hell.

It sounds pretty good too, but the defining characteristic has to be its volume.

I was at an outdoor party with almost 300 people and someone had put music on (good thing ASCAP didn’t catch us!) and after listening for 15 minutes I looked over to see where the music was coming from, expecting to see at least a wedding DJ-sized setup and there was just an iPod in a Hi Fi, blasting out the tunes. Rather impressive.

It was still too expensive for my tastes though, I didn’t need an ersatz PA and so I didn’t see any point in paying for one.

cctoronto05: I want one… I think it sounds waaaay better than the other units available… I’d like one in black though… it is perfect for taking outside… it runs on batteries if need be!
Go to the store and compare it to the others… you’ll find there is no comparison.
If they discontinue it, I’ll have to buy one sooner rather than later (I was going to buy one next spring).

blueangel01: Go to an Apple store and try one out. It blows the other speaker docks out of the water. The sound is really rich, and it gets louder than hell.

Wireless iTunes Store to debut Wednesday?

August 29, 2007

genericwhiteguyWednesday will also bring “wireless iTunes Store sales” to the iPhone and said iPods. MacDaily’s source also claims that the iPods will indeed be Mac OS X-based, and that we should “Prepare to be stunned [with] iPod’s new capabilities.”[...] Thanks to genericwhiteguy for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 26Diggs).

What other users say about this:

rusty_g: i don’t think they will use edge or 3g due to the fact that it is just an ipod, it’s not a phone, it doesn’t need to use those networks for it’s capabilities. It should only by wifi…

SystemJinx: I’m sure the iPhone could download iTunes purchases over Edge and Wifi. However TV shows and movies over Edge would be painfully slow.

We need an iPhone with 3G capability.

DJCult: If this is true and I can purchase songs wherever I am, I will be very broke, and Apple will be very profitable.

DiggedyDoo: Suhhhhweeet. Sorry if this is a dumb question… but wireless over a wireless network, or also over Edge for the iPhone?

Apple updates AirPort Extreme firmware to 802.11n draft 2.0 spec

Do you Know what Apple Command Symbol Means ?

August 29, 2007

FameMoneySomething you might not noticed …[...] Thanks to FameMoney for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 2033Diggs).

What other users say about this:

tallguy: its on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E2%8C%98 or just search for ⌘, additional info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_key

brundlefly: Huh. The power of Christ Commands you.

yankpats: My last name is Hans…. and I feel like a Saint…. I had no idea apple honored me.

HarleyQuinn: How about Apple and even Microsoft get rid of the BS special keys and leave it at ALT or CTRL and sometimes FN. For a company that loves to oversimplify things, you would think an Apple keyboard would be rid of some of this. Add to the confusion that some call it the Apple key, some call it the Command key. On a “standard” keyboard it is in the ALT position.

*nix and MS seem to agree on basic keyboard commands (i.e. CTRL-C for copy NOT APPLE-C) 2 against 1 Apple, get on board.

(I use all three OS’s and this keyboard nonsense drives me crazy)

bleutuna: What’s weird about the Swastika is that EVEN THOUGH I know it’s older than the Nazi party, meant something else, was stolen, etc – it automatically evokes this immediately feeling of disgust/fear and anguish within me. I can’t help it. Its very odd.

deadnoob: once again, just in case anybody didnt know, thats not a swastika. its a buddhist symbol

a swastika is the mirrored image of that. im not sure why they dont say that in the article…

komarovsky: If you search that site for “Apple,” the 25:18 page is the only result given, even though the page oddly never mentions Apple. How then does Google know to give the page as a result?

rnawky: Yay apple supports Hitler.

unknownzero: stoooooooooooooopid

blinkgreen: I just want to point out that the swastika wasn’t first used by the nazi’s. They stole the symbol and turned it into a monster.

blinkgreen: That’s really weird, I’m currently reading a book by James Rollins and that specific symbol keeps on popping up. It’s odd how something that calls your attention, then about the same time you hear/see it again. It’s like some strange kind of deja vu.

alexiusca: 
:)

iChainsaw: the command key means command when it is on a keyboard. if you rip the symbol off the keyboard…it is whatever you say it is.

Unr3a1: Is is just me, or is the right loop larger than the left loop?

rplantz: Um, so let me get this straight…Apple is anti-semitic?

Apple rumored to be in talks with Volkswagen over “iCar”

August 29, 2007

Andy.DVolkswagen has “confirmed” to a German paper that the company is in talks with Apple, and speculates that the two could be developing a subcompact “iCar.” While we’d love to jump in on that one, our Magic 8-ball is telling us something much more reasonable.[...] Thanks to Andy.D for providing this nice story on Digg (more than 30Diggs).

macjunkie1: Old news, Volkswagon already have produced an iGolf, it is basically a golf with an iPod connection, the iPod can be controlled through the head unit of the car.

Steve Jobs’ not-so-secret plan to take over the world is going well

August 29, 2007

CLIFFosakaJAPANAT&T may want to watch its step. Jobs has shown he’s willing to chuck an inconvenient business partner–as he did with IBM, which once supplied Apple’s processors–if they stumble.
