Why iMovie ‘08 Matters

September 7, 2007

dhollisterThe new iMovie and its future, from the point of view of a Mac fan, educator, and professional editor.[...] Thanks to dhollister for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

lochness: Do Macs come with speeel chekc ?

bradyj: I’ve been able to rapidly create short home movies using iMovie 08 and have really enjoyed using it. when i’m editing something together, my main intention is to cut 90%+ of the fluff and just use simple transitions between the edited shots. I’m completely uninterested in creating DVDs, I just want to throw something up on the net to share w/ family and friends. To me, less is definitely more with this new version.

Vermifax: I’m editing two EPK’s in iMovie ‘08 and i love it. That being said, I’m not getting FCP until I know for sure that it’s 100% Leopard-ready.

ahirreddy: This is just a bunch of BS. iMovie 08 matters just as much as Windows Movie Maker. It’s sad to see that people are trying to justify it just because of insane apple loyalty. “It’s an apple product, and the new way of working with video editing must be right if apple says it is.” It’s just shameful on the part of the loyalists who keep trying to make everything apple does seem like it is the second coming. This is really annoying, buried as LAME.

mhender: Any post that somewhat criticizes the program is buried. Way to go digg, showing your true colours .

Obishawn11: I don’t understand why people hate iMovie 08 so much. Yes it sucks that there was not update to iMovie 06 in iLife 08, but personally I think Apple is on the right track for reconstructing the way iMovie works. They probably could have gone about it a little better by updating iMovie 06 for this version and offering what is currently iMovie 08 as a ‘preview’ product and called it iMoviePlus 08 or something like that until it was mature enough to become the actual iMovie. iMovie 08 is not horrible, it’s just version 1.0 (or even version 0.9 if you will). Once Apple sticks in all the features that iMovie 06 had, I think that this will be a perfect product for at least the home user to use to create fantastic movies. I commend Apple for being brave enough to realize that iMovie 06 is not heading down the correct path and starting a iMovie 08 from scratch in order to head down the correct path.

People also like to try to insult iMovie 08 as a product that 13 year olds with a YouTube account can use and Mommies and Daddies can use. WELL DUH! Apple is about being simple enough that anyone can use. What do you think the whole point is with iLife?! If you want something that a 13 year old can’t use or that Mommies and Daddies can’t use, go buy some professional software for 4x as much and quit your complaining!

I just recently made a DVD with pictures and video clips of a vacation that I took in July. I saw what iMovie 08 could do with the demo video that’s available on Apple’s website and decided to purchase iMovie 08 (the updates to iPhoto was also a big factor in my decision to upgrade). I had 400 pictures and some video clips that I wanted to put into basically a slideshow with a soundtrack to show people. I used iMovie 08 to create 2 15 minute clips in no time. I’ve seen how you do the same thing in iMovie 06, and given the choice again, I would still use iMovie 08 because of how quick and easy it is to add the pictures, pick just the portion of the clips I want and manipulate the video. It’s also much easier to preview my changes and a very small portion of the video. I did have to use iMovie 06 to piece the clips together along with an opening title screen, ending credits and add chapter markers, but that’s fine because I already had the chapter clips created in iMovie 08. Then I used iDVD 08 to create the DVD. So I used both versions of the program to accomplish my task. Yes, it sucked having to export from 08 and import into 06 just to get chapter markers and better templates for the opening screen and ending credits. But I still preferred using iMovie 08 and would start with it again if I had to redo that project or on my next project. I actually hated having to use 06 even though 06 had more features because 08 is just easier to use.

I’m a recent Mac convert. I used to be 100% a Windows user until earlier this year. I love my Mac. Everything I do on it is so intuitive. iMovie 08 embodies that. It is on the right track. Just because it lacks features does not mean it’s a bad product. Apple did not supply iMovie 06 with iMovie 08 because 08 sucks that bad and can’t live up to expectations. It’s because they knew that if they didn’t have those features in 08, they still had to provide those features somehow. They did it as a favor to us and because it was the right thing to do, not because it was their version of an apology. I have a feeling that those complaining about iMovie 08 have either not used it or aren’t looking towards the future at what iMovie 08 will become.

And for those that are complaining about the price, iMovie 08 is not the only thing that comes with iLife 08, so you’re not paying $70+ for just iMovie, you’re paying it for the entire package.

sq2shooter: Even Apple is aware that iMovie 08 would not live up to expectations as an upgrade of 06. This is why it is the only program included in iLife 08 that leaves the previous version of the program on the hard drive when it installs. Yes, believe it or not, iMovie 06 is left in a folder after install so you can do the basic editing that iMovie 08 has been stripped of. This speaks volumes as to what Apple knew would be the reaction to iMovie 08. This program was obviously designed for 13 year olds with a You Tube account.

justusbruns: It really stimulates you to be creative, I hate to wait long before I see the result, I’m not a perfectionist I like simplicity and a quick nice looking result, if you want to have everything at the right time beginning, you should better use professional products like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro

sq2shooter: This guy has no idea what he is talking about. iMovie 08 is an abortion of epic proportions. You don’t believe me? Go to apple.com support forums and look at the iMovie08 posts. This stripped down version of iMovie 06 is pretty much universally hated by everyone.

Gizmort: As a professional video editor for 20 year using FCP and everything else. iMovie ‘08 is revolutionary. So amazing. Truly is the first product in a long time that has made me excited for the future of my industry.

mrgoat: He didn’t really say why it ‘mattered’. Aside from it’s fast.

xike: Fine, improve an app…but don’t remove functionality in the process. Backward compatibility with previous iMovies: visual effects, chapter markers, plugins, audio editing, etc…

That’s like praising a new version of Notepad.exe because it’s more intuitive, even though it doesn’t support numbers, and it can’t import previous .txt files without replacing all white space with ascii smiley faces.

ewcost: Check out our review… http://macfilmmaking.com/archives/218

fugrank: @t0ny

because you love apple?

aa90digg: Even the earlier version of Imovie should never be compared to Final Cut Pro or even Final Cut Express for professional or semi-professional editing work. I think one guy manage to make a professional documentary using Imovie (Carnation I believe) and it was good because the guy is a really gifted writer and he had a good story to tell, not because of the editing.

The main problem right now in Imovie is the inability to set In point and Out point. And the way to modify your clips is really precarious.
Lots of people complain about the audio limitations and the inability to set chapter markers. You can get around that by opening your Imovie project in Garage Band. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but it works quite well that way, and it’s actually closer to the professional work flow (Sound-editing wise).

What interest me the most is the interface. I thought it was completely backward at first, but after using it I feel that Apple is trying to re-invent the way things are done in the editing world, to shake some concepts about the job by remodeling them. Some of those new concepts might stick, maybe none of them won’t, but it’s damn interesting. And very daring.

(P.S: I allow myself to open my mouth so lengthly because I’ve just spent a couple of day playing with Ilife 08 and I work professionally in the post-production world. This those not make me any more right or wrong than anybody else. This is just an opinion)

iPhoneSIMfree shows us demo of iPhone unlock app, backend — now due Monday

September 7, 2007

arbiterofcool“So the iPhoneSIMfree guys have some news today. First up, they called to let us know they did in fact delay the launch of their iPhone SIM unlock software (which was clear by the fact that no one has it yet) — but it’s now due Monday, and they’ve promised us iPhone SIM unlocks for five lucky readers.”[...] Thanks to arbiterofcool for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

Vektuz: I’m confused too. Why does it cost money to unlock a phone? Isn’t it just software (hax) that runs?

SirZRX: *confused*

joel8x: Engadget should not be reporting on this. It’s no different than any typical eBay scam. Lets mock up some phony application to make it believable so a few thousand more suckers “pre-order” a product that does not exist.

MajorPain: Yeah I am wondering if it’s not now useless with the latest Itunes at 7.4.1. Anyways those guys at iphonesimfree.com are taking way too long for an update.

Top Ringtones at topringers.info

jceagles81: isn’t this ap useless now bceause itunes 7.4 bricks the hacked iphones and 7.3 apperantly has some security buffer overflow flaw

StephenCIreland: anyone know where we can download the demo app ?

pentak: Only T-Mobile? Sorry, that’s not an unlock.

h00ligan: so the only thing that you are losing with t-mobile is visual voicemail then>?

preshit: Atlast a reason for us international users to rejoice ?

iphoner: Is it true that they sold or is this bs? http://digg.com/apple/iPhoneSIMfree_purchased_Undisclosed_Buyer_and_Amount

FvKdUp: The main reason iphonesimfree is selling in bulk is because once they release their software it’s just a matter of time before hackers bypass the licensing and offer free unlocking. The resellers are going to be stuck with extra licenses, and iphonesimfree banked on resellers buying loads of those things. That and it’s definitely better from a legal stand point. i still cant wait

sambam: These guys sold the company already:

Exclusive: iPhone Software Unlock Confirmed on Video

September 7, 2007

diskopoDespite confirmation from reputable sources like CNN and Engadget, there were still people unsure of whether iPhoneSIMFree actually worked. The reason? The lack of video proof. BambinosKrib: Hold up, T-mobile is meant to be a decent network in the States?
Hell, in the UK T-mobile is utter pish!

springo: I still think this a scam. How do we know it was not hardware hacked before the video/during the video? Release the damn software if you want to be believed… Oh wait, you can’t because it doesn’t exist! But you’ll be rich by the time we get to know that, right?
http://digg.com/apple/iPhoneSIMfree_purchased_Undisclosed_Buyer_and_Amount

zincozinco: why is he not making the call from the dock as he was trying – until it picked up T-mobile- the next frame he has the mobile in his hand. its all just bogus – dont buy it. its one of the biggest scams at the moment. its like i have this car and it runs on water – wanna see me fill it up – ops new frame new car and it revs perfectly – god im so boooooooooooooooored of all these … i have a an unlock fopr the iphone…………

very: Funny We Never Get to See How the App is Loaded on the iPhone

mshanly: Someone will reverse engineer it to remove the authentication feature, meaning that it won’t phone home and you will be able to unlock your iPhone for free.

akf2000: re: torrenting/ pirating this s/w – it’s doing a ton of phoning home with the iPhone’s IMEI to verify the licence, and who’s better at protecting their own software than hackers?

tirofiban: I’m all for programmers getting paid for their hard work. But really, how many people are going to do this? All the cell phone providers seem about the same to me. There are easy ways to get out of your cell phone contract (ie roam a lot until they end your contract) to switch to AT&T. Is AT&T that bad? Plus I think the visual voice mail is highly underrated as a feature. I have trouble seeing who exactly these hacker’s target market is. I wish them the best, but I can’t see how this is going to make them rich.

Vektuz: I really dont understand why they charge to unlock a phone? Why does an industry that does this exist? Surely the same people who can hack AACS or other crazy protections can also hack this stuff, and release the unlocker for free? Or am I mistaken and there’s some material cost involved here?

giveer: Watching that was like that part in Office Space Where Peter’s trying to leave the office and his Mac keeps throwing status bars at him?… yeah…

pengas: Bullcrap… Lets wait till monday and see whats what.

zdiggler: don’t worry soon as one copy of the software deployed to paying customer you will just be able to BT it.

databoy: Get a life and live with commercial reality. Everyone wants something for nothing. If I came up with the idea I would sell it to the highest bidder and so would you.

If you want to unlock your iPhone read this article: http://apcmag.com/7122/how_to_hack_and_iphone_and_get_it_to_work_in_australia_using_your_mac

OR wait until a better phone comes onto the market. At the end of the day it is only a phone. If you need to have one in your pocket 24/7 then you are living a miserable life. Go out, get laid and get rid of the stagnant sap. you will then can think straight.

axelbrush: I bought 200 licenses and I received the same email! When will I get my damn unlock licenses? I am sick of these guys playing with our money.

HappyScrappy: It is notable that this email came about when iphonesimfree sent an invoice out to a group for payment (by wire transfer to San Marino) and that group transferred the money. This email then came back, saying the group should send the money again, to a different account, because “they’ve been acquired”.

It’s really starting to look like a scam.

mobilehavoc: If someone really did buy out iphonesimfree.com it could turn into a very bad business move…all it takes Apple is to block this software unlock in their next update and they just lost on their “investment”. I guess they’re hoping to make a ton of money as fast as they can while this works and for that reason I don’t get all the delays!!

Xploder06: I really don’t trust these guys, think about it, you’re sending them your IMEI number to use as a license to unlock your iPhone, what’s stopping them from reporting all of those IMEI numbers to the respective carriers and/or the police?

Result:
Hundreds maybe even thousands of unusable iPhones (even on AT&T)
iPhoneSimFree walk away with tons of money

New iPods do component video out, iPhone apparently will too

September 7, 2007

MrBabyManApparently the holiday-friendly gadgets support sending component video out with a new cable the Apple Store is selling. While the iPhone likely doesn’t do this just yet, the feature could easily be included in the promised firmware update that will bring the iTunes WiFi Store before the month’s end.[...] Thanks to MrBabyMan for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

st3vo: Now only if the new iPods supported x264 .mkv files..

csipod: It needs usb input and vga output :) And a joystick….THEN I’ll want one. Hell they’re awesome as it is people get em free while you can http://istuff.freepay.com/?r=39009517 and then worry about the updates later. This is going to be an amazing little platform.

h00ligan: congratulations, and welcome to news that was all over everywhere including digg a long time before this post.

pixelperfect: Wouldn’t there need to be an onboard TV-Video Chip? Therefore, if the iPhone doesn’t have one, no firmware update is going to magically add one.
From what I can tell, they were able to add a TV-Video Chip to the new iPod nano’s cause they are large enough to fit one.

sn00kie: Just did a live chat with apple and asked them. It wont let me copy and paste but here is a snippet.

Lori:
Yes ok, I have just confirmed it will work for your iPhone. Please don’t worry!

Me:
so even though the iphone icon isn’t there, it will still work

Lori:
Yes, please don’t worry. It does match up under the specs for the iPhone

Me:
Where did you find this

Lori:
The same place you did, and I have access to the tech specs

badtz: This is not true. the component cable only carries the video on the new iPods, and for the iPhone only AUDIO. There’s a little disclaimer on the page regarding this. Interestingly, the same disclaimer is not written on the page for the video out cables via composite.

HappyScrappy: New iTunes 7.4.1 out.

Guess why.

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/-297776.php

DelMonte: I’m impressed and surprised that the tiny iPod nano 3rd gen can also output 640×480 composite and component video.

Pureeviljester: another first on Apple’s list for the handheld device industry that will revolu- oh wait.

cool feature to have though.

FDL1: “Word on the street is that the video out function on the new line of iPods is locked if used in conjunction with old video cables and docks from third parties. Apparently, the new iPods will only work with cables featuring Apple’s authentication chip, leaving long time video iPod owners in a bind if they have iPod video gear lying around.”

imatt: I’ve been using my iPod and a cable that came with my camcorder to watch shows from my iPod on TV for about a year now, what’s new about this?

ShinRaTDR: “component video output is supported only by the 3G iPod nano, iPod classic, and iPod touch (480p or 576p for the former two, only 480i or 576i from the iPod touch for some reason)”

That has to be some kind of oversight or misprint, why the hell would they put lower quality output on the higher end iPod, makes no sense for any company, especially Apple.

IanPatterson: I don’t care. I ‘m still pissed about a how low the capacity is. I would buy one if it was bigger

monsterofNone: cuz you need component video out to faithfully reproduce that low-def compressed video on your huge TV screen.

UltraMegaFilms: If they are planning to go this far, why not HDMI?

Apple wants to slash TV show prices in half, aggresively drive iPod sales

September 7, 2007

Ecstasy99 cents per show – There apparently was more to NBC’s decision to pull its shows out of the iTunes Store than we were led to believe. Apple is reportedly pushing the concept of cutting the prices of TV shows to 99¢.[...] Thanks to Ecstasy for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

krahzee: I never got the pricing scheme for TV shows from Itunes. At $1.99 per, you can’t burn them to DVD. So in effect, to catch a 24 show season, you have to pay almost $48 on itunes, then pay $48 for DVDs to keep it. THey want to drive DVD sales thorugh the roof? Give people who buy a whole season of shows on itunes a coupon for that boxed set with thier purchase. Something like $15-$20 off would do. Sure they might not make a ton of money on the itunes downloads by giving a gift certificate, but they’d sell a heck of alot more boxed sets.

MKREdit: Don’t get me wrong I love cheap stuff but I think Apple is backing itself into a corner. Trying to force a price point down these media companies throat is only going to give them a reason to jump ship. The relationship between media companies and Apple is a symbiotic relationship. If apple continues under the notion that the media companies need them and they don’t need the media companies this could end badly for apple

SoxFanNH: Just get a HD Homerun for $160 bucks and record all you want for FREE with HD quality…

fLUx1337: I would pay 50p (~$1) per episode of each show, no more… (in the peak of the season, I watch like 10 shows, so thats £5/$10 per week, £20/$40 a month!!)

I dont know about advertising, but I highly highly highly doubt each person watching (some shows have 5mil+ viewers remember) generates $1US.

Saying that though, us in the UK pay like $4 PER episode anyway, plus we only have the crap shows mainly, so I doubt we will get anywhere near $1 here!

/me sticks with BitTorrent until the major TV show makers stop messing around….

monsterofNone: if i could grab my favorite shows for a buck i’d cancel my direcTV contract. this is a move to compete with satellite ans cable TV providers.

diggmemphis: I think that Apple may be getting itself into trouble. They’re being overly agressive in trying to set and control the distribution price of content that’s not theirs. So what if NBC wants to sell their shows for $5. Guess what happens when no one buys it? It drops back to $1.99 then $0.99 or whatever. Apple is over-reaching and leaving the content creators of music, film and television in a deflationary race to Zero. I mean 10 years from now (when inflation is up 20% from present levels), how much will a new song sell for? If you think they’ll be a $1.19 on iTunes, you’ve lost it. They’ll be $0.79 or .69. Apples going to force the other guys elsewhere.

Skidmark66: apple know what they’re doing, NBC do not . . .

deadbaby: At 99 cents I’d probably just stop pirating entirely if the selection was improved.

goldenratiophi: If this happens, I WILL no longer pay for cable TV for the 2 shows I watch. Anybody with me?

cthellis: I think it would behoove studios to go that route. Why? Because right now digital sales do NOT cannibalize DVD sales, as the digital copies trade a bit of convenience for extra cost, less quality, lack of extras, etc.

But you know what? If they halved the cost (and perhaps gave a “$20/season” straight charge for 22-26 episode blocks, which your typical season is), it STILL won’t be cannibalizing much from DVD… that will simply be the “holy crap, cheap!” charge that people will be willing to pay AS WELL. DVD prices have been continually dropping and are going to continue to do so (as they compete with each other), so it’s better for them to position this kind distribution as the way to make MORE money. Someone unwilling to pay $40+ for digital-only copies when they can pick up the DVD’s for less are much more likely to grab them as impulse buys and convenience factors if it costs them a negligible amount. DVD sets will still be there for all the extras (and the more universal playing) and such, but now the digital downloads become an enhancement. They also still have their “moving to HD” to keep premium prices on content from here on in as well. But along with “premium” should come “value.”

I suppose they don’t want to make it a precedent, as in the future we may get to having digital distribution be the ONLY method used, but even then I see us moving to more of a subscription base anyway, a la cable/satellite TV, with tiered charges and extras. You’d think at the very least they’d push to offer rebates to people who DO buy both, as they’re simply making more than people who buy only one or the other.

Also, people are by and large willing to buy more than twice as many shows at ~$20 each than they are at $40 each. That’s simply the way it goes when you grease the wheels and make them not have to think about how EXPENSIVE something is.

Avian00: I hope this turns out to be true. Am I the only one who thought the $1.99 per episode was pretty absurd? Seriously, it’s a freaking TV show! Unlike a movie, which has a high production value and is (generally) a complete story, TV shows have a much lower production value and almost no replay value, since one episode usually doesn’t come close to completing the story. If it’s a good series that goes on for years, I’m going to watch the episode once and never again. $0.99 is starting to become reasonable in my book, but I think $0.49 is really where I would exclusively buy my shows online and stop watching them on TV (or using bittorrent).

allenm7: Go Apple. Fight the good fight.

kerplunk: Alright, now let’s make song prices 25 cents.

Anevilweasel: Honestly, the only thing that has kept me from purchasing television episodes on itunes is price. why pay the same amount (or more) for a lesser quality digital download that takes up HD space when I can purchase a DVD (or HDDVD) with better quality, extra content and pretty packaging?

With a lower price I’d be wiling to pick up that episode that I missed or my Tivo screwed up on recording (which happens too often). I’ll be honest I’m waiting patiently for a service that will let me rent movies or TV episodes that is cost effective, usuable and at least descent quality. My cable VOD is quirky and limited, Unbox is currently a pain to use and no TV episodes though I love that it downloads directly to my Tivo. iTunes is pricey, not organized as well as I’d like (though better than other solutions), and can be a pain to watch on TV, Xbox Marketplace I like but has a HORRIBLE interface for choosing what you want. Not to mention the prices are on par with iTunes and Unbox which in my mind are a little high for the quality limitations.

Hope for the future.

MichaelE777: We all have our disagreements with President Bush. Immigration, U.S. Attorney firings, Iraq , Darfur , etc., are all hot topics these days. The following “speech” was written recently by an ordinary Maineiac [a resident of the People's Republic of Maine ]. While satirical in nature, all satire must have a basis in fact to be effective. This is an excellent piece by a person who does not write for a living. It is sent with the author’s permission.

The speech George W. Bush SHOULD give:

BUSH’S RESIGNATION SPEECH

Normally, I start these things out by saying “My Fellow Americans.” Not doing it this time. If the polls are any indication, I don’t know who more than half of you are anymore. I do know something terrible has happened, and that you’re really not fellow Americans any longer.

I’ll cut right to the chase here: I quit. Now before anyone gets all in a lather about me quitting to avoid impeachment, or to avoid prosecution or something, let me assure you: There’s been no breaking of laws or impeachable offenses in this office.

The reason I’m quitting is simple. I’m fed up with you people. I’m fed up because you have no understanding of what’s really going on in the world. Or of what’s going on in this once-great nation of ours. And the majority of you are too damned lazy to do your homework and figure it out.

Let’s start local. You’ve been sold a bill of goods by politicians and the news media. Polls show that the majority of you think the economy is in the tank. And that’s despite record numbers of homeowners, including record numbers of MINORITY homeowners. And while we’re mentioning minorities, I’ll point out that minority business ownership is at an all-time high. Our unemployment rate is as low as it ever was during the Clinton administration. I’ve mentioned all those things before, but it doesn’t seem to have sunk in.

Despite the shock to our economy of 9/11, the stock market has rebounded to record levels and more Americans than ever are participating in these markets. Meanwhile, all you can do is whine about gas prices, and most of you are too damn stupid to realize that gas prices are high because there’s Increased demand in other parts of the world, and because a small handful of noisy idiots are more worried about polar bears and beachfront property than your economic security.

We face real threats in the world. Don’t give me this “blood for oil” thing. If I were trading blood for oil, I would’ve already seized Iraq ’s oil fields and let the rest of the country go to hell. And don’t give me this ‘Bush Lied; People Died’ crap either. If I were the liar you morons take me for, I could’ve easily had chemical weapons planted in Iraq so they could be ‘discovered.’ Instead, I owned up to the fact that the intelligence was faulty.

Let me remind you that the rest of the world thought Saddam had the goods, same as me. Let me also remind you that regime change in Iraq was official US policy before I came into office.
Some guy named ‘Clinton ‘ established that policy. Bet you didn’t know that, did you?

You idiots need to understand that we face a unique enemy. Back during the cold war, there were two major competing political and economic models squaring off. We won that war, but we did so because fundamentally, the Communists wanted to survive, just as we do. We were simply able to outspend and out-tech them.

That’s not the case this time. The soldiers of our new enemy don’t care if they survive. In fact, they want to die. That’d be fine, as long as they weren’t also committed to taking as many of you with them as they can. But they are. They want to kill you, and the bastards are all over the globe. You should be grateful that they haven’t gotten any more of us here in the United States since September 11. But you’re not. That’s because you’ve got no idea how hard a small number of intelligence, military, law enforcement, and homeland security people have worked to make sure of that.
When this whole mess started, I warned you that this would be a long and difficult fight. I’m disappointed how many of you people think a long and difficult fight amounts to a single season of ‘Survivor.’

Instead, you’ve grown impatient. You’re incapable of seeing things through the long lens of history, the way our enemies do. You think that wars should last a few months, a few years, tops.

Making matters worse, you actively support those who help the enemy. Every time you buy the New York Times, every time you send a donation to a cut-and-run Democrat’s political campaign, well, dang it, you might just as well FedEx a grenade launcher to a Jihadist. It amounts to the same thing.

In this day and age, it’s easy enough to find the truth. It’s all over the Internet. It just isn’t on the pages of the New York Times or on NBC News. But even if it were, I doubt you’d be any smarter. Most of you would rather watch American Idol.

I could say more about your expectations that the government will always be there to bail you out, even if you’re too stupid to leave a city that’s below sea level and has a hurricane approaching.

I could say more about your insane belief that government, not your own wallet, is where the money comes from. But I’ve come to the conclusion that were I to do so, it would sail right over your heads.

So I quit. I’m going back to Crawford. I’ve got an energy-efficient house down there (Al Gore could only dream) and the capability to be fully self-sufficient. No one ever heard of Crawford before I got elected, and as soon as I’m done here pretty much no one will ever hear of it again. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to die of old age before the last pillars of America fall.

Oh, and by the way, Cheney’s quitting too. That means Pelosi is your new President. You asked for it. Watch what she does carefully, because I still have a glimmer of hope that there are just enough of you remaining who are smart enough to turn this thing around in 2008.

So that’s it. God bless what’s left of America. Some of you know what I mean.

The rest of you, kiss off.
