Growl 1.1 Released!

September 8, 2007

cohman2001They skipped a few releases, but there’s a whole slew of new features to enjoy including: a global positioning system, close buttons available on notifications, and a totally redesigned applications tab.[...] Thanks to cohman2001 for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

thetinguy: Is there an Azureus plugin?

vagarach: The best thing is that adium comes with growl, I would never have known about this brilliant software otherwise!

wontstoptalking: I’m still on windows…

LordPengwin: A network compatible Java implementation can be found here. It provides an API to send growl messages as well as a simple utility to receive and display them. I don’t know if it’s compatible with the new version but works fine with the previous one.

http://homepage.mac.com/stevevm/JGrowl/JGrowl.tar.gz

cbartlett: Growl + autotest + rpsec for Rails development = simple awesome. Thank you Growl developers!

Kevin108: Nobody knows what Growl is, so some additional subject info would have been nice.

Jalexster: Either I’ve gone blind, or logging support has been removed. Why has logging support been removed? I can’t find it anywhere. Growl is practically dead to me now.

biocandy: Growl is brilliant!…

Why is the Music Video notification so slow in this update? It’s not running as smooth as previously either. I hope there’s a little bugfix out soon.

festivalman: I’m loving Growl 1.1, but I can’t seem to get Mail to work with it. I’ve installed everything, and even ran that defaults command I found on the google groups, but it’s still not coming up under mail/prefs. I’m seeing no direct answers on the growl cocoaforge forums either. Anyone have any ideas?

joecritch: Close buttons! Finally.

SpoBo: it killed growl for me :s The icon is still there in the preff pane but when I click on it it just keeps loading :s That sucks balls! GrawlHelperApp is running though … need some help :D

ciphex: awesome. growl is an excellect piece of software.

MCDupree: Do you have to uninstall your previous version before updating?

thesportoflife: get rid of the .info domain. growl isnt a cheap viagra site. good job on the new version tho!

eliasg: Awesome, one of my favorites and a definite must-have for all Mac users.

iTunes 7.4.1 ringtones workaround discovered

September 8, 2007

shunpikeEnjoy it until 7.4.2 come out (another 10 hours or so?)[...] Thanks to shunpike for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

clyde2801: You guys paid 600 bucks for a freakin phone, and now yer bitchin about 99c ringtones???

zongamin: Seriously – having a ‘ringtone’ other than a simple ‘ring ring’ or even ’silent’ is surely of interest only to kids. Grow up.

zbeast: you don’t have to use Itune to load ring tones on your phone.
You can be sure that there will be 1/2 dozen applications out there that will let you take your non drm’ed music and
make it into ring tones.
Just wait dont worry.

rodzilla: workaround doesn’t work for me, anyone have better instructions

geost: Does anyone know of a program I can use to crop aac songs? Does audacity read aacs?

DaveClarkOne: How many ringtones does one need such that 99 cents paid to Apple is a big deal?? This is hardly worth front page Digg news. Buried as lame.

lookoutforchris: I’m still on 7.4.0. All you have to do is get an AAC file (m4a extension), change the extension to m4r, and then copy the file to /Your Music Folder/Ringtones and if you have “sync all ringtone” checked it will sync any file in there. I’ve also found no limit for ringtone size, the largest ringtone I’ve synced is 9.5MB. Now that I have all the free ringtones that I want I’ll upgrade to 7.4.1 and see what’s up.

BruB: How many freekin’ ringtone do you need anyway.

ThreeDee912: I think this is more of AT&T’s fault. AT&T makes a lot of money by charging people for a shit quality 30 second music clip. I think Apple left these ringtone workarounds in iTunes on purpose.

“It’s not a bug, it’s a feature”…

MedHead: This reminds me a lot of SONY’s actions with the PSP, making updates that were pretty much just made to break homebrew applications.

Vektuz: Can’t you just use mp3 ringtones on that device? There’s like a billion and one programs to do that. You can even tag the ringtones with ‘ringtone’ as the genre, and make your usual playlist not include those files (yay smart playlists).

DesertSessions: Well, none of the workarounds worked for me. So I’m just gonna sit here and enjoy this Sonar tone. I feel like Denzel Washington.

djdole: Maybe I’m missing something, but I followed all the each and every step in this engadget article and the only thing it did was place the m4r files in the “Ringtones” directory which allowed them to be displayed in the ringtones tab.
But even there, AND selected to be synced, iTunes still wouldn’t sync the re-renamed m4a files to my phone.
Just displaying them in iTunes doesn’t help much, for me at least.
:-/

fascfoo: YOU DONT HAVE TO UPDATE IF YOU DONT WANT TO.

Stop freaking out about 7.4.2 or 3 or 4 or 5….you don’t have to update if you don’t want to. get all the damn ringtones you could ever want and THEN upgrade.

IsmailOo: cant you just not update?

TV out locked in new iPod classic and nano

September 8, 2007

obeezyThis is rather disappointing. According to iLounge, Apple has re-designed the TV out functionality of the new iPod classics and nanos so that they no longer work with older third-party TV out cables and docks.[...] Thanks to obeezy for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

zybch: Seriously, what does apple have to do to drive people away from their players?
They really seem to want to fuck the things up so severely that the iPods are going to become totally unusable!
I guess the dumb apple fanboys will still buy them no matter what though.

djphatjive: Is this article about Microsoft?

3G iPhone with 16GB set to drop on November 12th

September 8, 2007

CommodusApple may launch its iPhone campaign in Europe with a 3G-capable iPhone with enhanced storage, according to what appears to be a leaked ad from T-Mobile Germany. The ad promises HSDPA Internet access (up to 3.6Mbps!) and 16GB of flash. Hope you didn’t buy that $399 iPhone assuming it wouldn’t get better![...] Thanks to Commodus for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

MakJak: yes, this is an Interesting news for all mobile phone users who like to buy best 3G mobile phones. i found some other 3g mobile phones at http://www.3mobilephonedeal.co.uk

CarzorStelatis: The good news is that the EU Competition Authority will probably force Apple to release an unlocked version. So as long as you don’t mind paying shipping fees, import taxes etc. Americans should be able to get one too.

jun8119: 16GB flash. Must be because the new high capacity 16GB flash cards are coming out next month. 32GB flash cards are to be released in January. Gee I wonder if a 32GB iphone will be out before Q2 next year. Why couldn’t they just make the iPhone flash card slot? Well I’m not buying because its not compatible with Orb. HTC Anyone?

amoeba: this one needs an ‘obvious’ tag.
Apple’s marketing strategy:
1) Make product
2) Release product (to early adopters)
3) Release updated version (to pull in more customers and get the early adopters to upgrade)
4) Profit!
5) return to step 3

jabberwolf: And the rumors start to help the sad Apple stock rise again !!

boristheflorist: I read an interview with the head of vodafone just today saying they didn’t negotiate for the iphone contract here in England because there was no 3g compatibility. If Apple isn’t telling their potential carriers I very much doubt an advert that calls an iPhone an iPod is correct.

PradaPete: ywah this ad looks just about ugly and crappy enough to be a genuine t-mobile ad. I buy it.

pixelmatrix: I am not going to fall for this—it seems unlikely that Apple would do that so soon after they just dropped the price and pissed everyone off.

DaleoftheUK: I really wouldn’t be surprised to see the European version being 3G. And with the new 16gb iPod touch and the lower iPhone model been dropped, not odd to see a 16gb version. For a phone 16gb is good, if I was still buying a touch (ipod only kind of device) then I’d want more storage.

MrColdheart: 70euros for 400 min… wow thats retarded (around 85$ u.s.)
I think id pay less if i was roaming in another country with my american service.
they seem to get all these cooler gadgets but then the pricing is outragous.

rowlodge: if they cant tell the difference between an ipod and iphone they dont understand what gig means either it may be a massive translation mistake.

xtlosx: am i the only one who doesn’t give a shit about iphones? Who cares….

beggersfunk: i hope it comes to Japan. Damn it can’t wait.

chrisrad: 3G? bring it to australia and i’m there.

rdas7: 3G is one thing. MMS support and a camera for video calling is another.
Oh, and while we’re there, can we have support for using this device as a wireless modem please?

iTunes Store slip-up reveals future rental movie options?

September 8, 2007

Does Apple Still Covet The Enterprise?

September 8, 2007

thinkingseriousWith the release of iWork ‘08, the new iMacs, new hardware RAID options for the Xserve and Mac Pros, updated Airport Extreme base stations, and bumps to the Mac Mini, the billion-dollar question, “Is Apple ready for the enterprise?” is again in play.[...] Thanks to thinkingserious for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

kenkirk: What many people do not realize is that most of the businesses in the U.S. and rest of the world are small to medium sized companies. Is it such a bad thing to NOT go after the Corporate 500 and instead go after the hundreds of thousands that make up the SMB?
The typical SMB needs only a couple servers and a RAID or two for their operation, which usually means they do not have the IT expertise of larger corporations. Why wouldn’t you want a server and RAID system that are easy to implement and administer, especially when you need your time to do more important things?

CiDaemon: Apple has been “ready for the enterprise” for a long time; in fact, Apple workstations are a common occurrence in many professional commercial fields: special effects, movie production, CAD…it’s not that Apple hasn’t had commercial presence, it’s that they’ve never pushed it much, especially to the non-professional sectors. Personally, I don’t think they should try to be IBM or Dell; their products are generally seen as higher-end, specialized workstations and systems rather than run-of-the-mill spreadsheet/e-mail machines. Just look at all of the softwares named int e summary–when’s the last time a legal office or other non-IT-centered enterprise needed RAID, or iWork? The Apple computer has never been a huge presence in casual business because the Apple computer isn’t directed toward it, and I see no incentive for SJ to try it now; Apple makes more on their $2000+ machines then they ever would on sub-$1000 ones (i.e. the ones used in Enterprise) and this maintains their status as high-end, professional devs.

Hands On iPod Touch Video Review

September 8, 2007

ilkeryoldasFrom Japan[...] Thanks to ilkeryoldas for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

arcticblue: I actually watched this when it was live. It aired pretty much right after the new iPod was announced. My wife woke me up to watch it with her and now she wants one probably more than I do.

ilkeryoldas: can anyone translate what they are saying?

kris33: Gotta love Japanese TV. So much unnecessary text on the screen, but they somehow manage to make stuff you have already seen new and exciting by adding music and sounding excited.

This is a better example of what I’m talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9He5MdxLEU

lebsoljah: Bunch of idiots

Millions are ready to pay ridiculous prices for worthless technology

God bless Americrap

twrife: 1. Move to China.
2. Pay someone that is making .05 $ a day to smuggle one to you for 10$.
3. Come back to the USA.
4. Profit!!!

K3ITHK: It is a good thing this is in the video section.

corporalclegg24: Their set is soo decorated its unbelievable.

barnis: I live in Japan and I cant stand the way they still insist on using cardboard posters with peel-offs to show any text or charts…not to mention the Barbarella studio

battletops: Videos like this (with text and graphics flying everywhere) make Apple’s marketing department cringe.

PhireN: How on earth did the Japanese get the ipod touch first? Not that I have anything against them, its just I expected it to pop up in the US first.
