The free unlock appears to have been achieved by the usual suspects according to their conversations on IRC. Apparently multiple hackers are exploiting the same buffer bug that the iPhone Sim Free people used to achieve their unlocks, but it is their own independent free unlock.[...] Thanks to wjrothman for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
manuelg: Guys, we are in the presence of one of the very few mistakes in recent Apple history (or not?). Perhaps “naively” Steve Jobs was looking after some quick profits and fall into the trap of “Corporate America”. Why all over the world all GSM companies gives you the freedom, and still some guys believe that attaching contracts to phones will keep loyal customers. Telecoms outside US have learned that lesson. Freedom of choice. That is what, at the end, will prevail. Love the Iphone, but still limited in capacity/capabilities. I will wait for the 16Gb/3rd Gen Iphone… Next December… Holiday season…. What a Coincidence.?
HappyScrappy: Worked for me. The only tip can can give (besides the chmod +x on the page) is that you need the termcap file from geohot’s original hack and you have to put it in /etc (not /usr/local/etc). If you don’t, miniterm will refuse to run with a message saying it is missing termcap.
Any, I’m unlocked. Hope it stays that way. If you read engadget right now, you’ll see Apple turned back from the “we don’t really mind if people make 3rd party apps” message to “your 3rd party apps will likely break with future updates”. In other words, they WILL break.
oliviacond: http://www.mediafire.com/?71h321y9113
snowisfun: ok so i am going to sign up for a tmobile plan tomorrow or so. any phone they sell that has a sim card will work right? also what would be the best plan? will the sidekick plan work, or is the 5.99 unlimited web good enough?
ccldude: Does someone have the tutorial for a mac instead of PC? Can’t wait to unlock the phone but I am using a mac.
onyxkill: http://newlegion.com/iphone.unlock.htm - Mirror Tutorial
bsonline: The CEO of iPhoneSimFree has written an open letter in light of this recent development.
To my loyal customers,
Sometimes, this is the shit you have to deal with. I really appreciate your money. However, there have been numerous death threats…. hmmm…..
Ok, I’ll give you a 20% refund as a credit to our store, so that you may purchase additional copies of iPhoneSimFree.
In conclusion,
Sent from my iPhone.

TellarHK: What I’m curious about now, is whether anyone can confirm or deny a T-Mobile Blackberry SIM will work, with full data.
MrViklund: AT&T and Apple have made an agreement and I think that people should respect that. But it seems like it’s a sport to hack every Apple product.
aforsberg: great job, oh 1337 haxxorz whose pw3nage is beyond the comprehension of a n00b such as i. i… i think i love you…
lothar250: Here’s the tutorial:
http://www.freeiphoneunlock.com/guide/
JWhempner: If I get an unlocked iphone and I am already with AT&T do I need to get a new plan or can I continue to use the same plan?
haid: What about data connectivity? Under AT&T it used edge. Under T-Mobile, can one surf the internet at a non-WIFI locale?
Don’t tell me it uses T-Mobile’s 3G, because then everyone explodes.
elguapo1976: Good work guys - time for an iPhone to ship to Australia me thinks.

Now that iPhoneSIMfree is in the wild, the iPhone Dev Team folks that started all this hackery have been looking to see how the iPhoneSIMfree hack works, and seem to have landed upon the solution. Apparently the thrust of what the iPhoneSIMfree folks figured out[...] Thanks to navotvolk for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
nunomartins: Do you think the iphone has a killer design?? check this out http://www.digg.com/apple/Review_ColorWare_iPhone_paint_job
risotto: I can confirm: it works! You still need to have an ssh server installed on your phone and login to the phone. Stop the CommCenter daemon and then dump the rom of the baseband using NORDumper and get the FLS file from Apple’s firmware image . Don’t forget to chmod 700 the iUnlock executable and off you go! Don’t forget to restart the CommCenter daemon…
pengas: UNLOCKED BABY!
Can’t wait to try it out myself…
MrViklund: AT&T and Apple have made an agreement and I think that people should respect that. But it seems like it’s a sport to hack every Apple product.

PabloMac: Pardon me; is this the line for free iPhone unlocks?
NsinU8: If the Iphonesimfree people werent so greedy and charged say $25 to unlock the phone nobody would really be anticipating this as much. Greedy bastards….. Steve Jobs cant issue a credit to the early adopters of this one.
Enuratique: Looks like some intrepid Diggers read my comments from a few days ago

CasaMan: Sep 11 20:38:51 [geohot] guest184, keep explaining

Sep 11 20:39:49 [geohot] wow, thats a big bug

iPhone ringtones became available late last night. It looks like fun, but will cost you another buck. Considering that you can make your own we’re wondering: Will you buy iTunes ringtones? From results now, momentum is in 1 direction…[...] Thanks to verge for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
timusca: If I had an iPhone, then yes…. I absolutely would. Its worth $2 to me to not have to open an mp3 in Audacity and start cutting things out for a ringtone.
Besides, Cingular charges $1.99 for ringtones on other phones, and you DON’T get to choose the section of the song you want. This makes it a half-decent deal in comparison.

Apple s believed to be working towards starting the new service some time in the fall which would offer a 30-day rental for $2.99[...] Thanks to CLIFFosakaJAPAN for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
roffelmeh: zomg is comcast gonna block this traffic too ?!
RufusJSquirrel: Whoopty fucking WHO GIVES A SHIT? Keep eating the DRM they’re feeding you. I can’t believe how much Apple dick Digg people suck.
InsMan: The benefit would be that you do not have to wait for the hottest movies due to inventory shortage. If they make it like pay per view then I would pass as they always seem to show movies that have been out for a few months on DVD.
acidbathfan: It’s still just speculation at this point but the article did mention a Financial Times article on the same subject which means it will probably happen sooner than latter. I remember the Financial Times warning people that the PS3 was going to be a financial drain and present a lot of difficulties for Sony over a year before it was released.
openthinker: I’d BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR! Hyuk Hyuk Hyuk!
digitallysick: I would buy an apple tv without question if they can offer this type of service. It would be amazing
Rileyper: ooo another way for apple to rip you off Maybe i can get $100 store credit
gfitzgeraldmd: Yes! If they can manage to get 720p, I’ll drop Netflix and buy an Apple TV the same day.
Masonsmith: you should then be able to apply the rental price towards purchase if you want to keep it.
Aurash91: well, its cheaper than going to Blockbuster… and a heck of a lot easier.
austin63: “but would prevent them from being copied, according to Financial Times”
Well if the financial times says it, it must be hard.
dudefaceguyman: I have to admit, if that’s true It’s one step closer to actually making the Apple TV worth purchasing. Good prices for rentals. Some more needed updates for the Apple TV and maybe I’ll consider buying one in 2 years! =D
Seriously, what was the point of the Apple TV without even online movie rentals on iTunes? It supports 720p and their TV/Movie content isn’t even DVD quality..What the hell?! Sure it’s fine and dandy for iPods, but for your TV. Pass. Apple TV should never of been released until at least the rentals were available and price was a lower.
Even if you looked at the Xbox 360 as just an media player and ignored games. It’s still worth purchasing more for a media center. SD and Hi-Def movie and TV rentals/purchases, option for an affordable HD-DVD player accessory, and now supports up to 1080p. The 360 is a gaming console. Gamiiiing Consolee. It’s sad that even ignoring the awesome games the 360 has, it’s still a much better purchase then the Apple TV in media comparison..
msam924: “believed to be working towards starting the new service some time in the fall”
can it get more vague?
bmc31190: I’ll just keep torrenting.
jydesign: Yes, finally! (or is it still just hopefully?). OK what kind of idiot studios would have rentals on Amazon Unbox, but not want to also allow for people to rent and play movies on an iPod? Now that all iPods but the shuffle have video playback, that’s a huge untapped market that’s not being served, and that also WANTS to be served - since there’s no legit Mac supported online rental platform. Perhaps another no-brainer destined to be mishandled by the big studios? Don’t blow it.

PC Mag spoke with Apple’s Greg Joswiak and received some refreshingly candid responses to their questions about the iPhone and iPod touch. Most notably, Joswiak said that Apple doesn’t oppose native software development at all, and that the company takes a neutral stance on it.[...] Thanks to AmazingSyco for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
Mafoo: I don’t believe this for a second. If they really wanted to bless 3rt party apps. they would have released a offical SDK. My guess is that they just don’t want to look like they can’t control thier products or don’t want to look like they are trying to control their customers.
Zoglog: taking a neutral stance is not giving you their “blessing” Inaccurate title. Go kill yourself.
grawity: How about “crack the iPhone to bits?”
penguincentral: Well, this is a surprising turn from the worst…
broodking: wow at last a good new age device that the company lets u hack there product
now I’m only waiting for Sony to allow u to hack the PSP
HappyScrappy: They reversed field.
http://digg.com/apple/Apple_changes_mind_now_says_don_t_hack_iPhone
carl25: does it really matter ? they obviously can’t stop people from hacking it.
m2paper: I wonder if they will try and stop iToner.
Lazer32: Its a Trap!
jim1977: Hmmm… saying the right things in the right places isn’t the same as open source or releasing an SDK; it’s just marketing talk for “we have a big wall, climb it if you want to, but it’s not going away and it might move or get bigger.”
Jaymoon: Could it be that they aren’t minding this one bit because there’s no way on earth they are going to meet their projected 10mil. iPhones sold by the end of the year?
Once the modding community builds up, sales start to rise, all the while Apple pretends it happened by pure chance… Pfffft.
tomis: Lack of a unified/documented SDK is just a sign that a platform is still in beta. Why buy a phone that’s still in beta in the first place?
Dognutz: bad title. Stoopid , bury. Who taught you to write titles??? FOX NEWS HAHHAHAHAHAAHAAHHAHA
mvpimpao: apple get its money from the selling of the iPhone.. not from xboxlive kinda thing (wtf lol)… thats AT&T´s problem. i could bet as Apple dont give a rat crap if people unlock their phones.
klethron: I want my ZunePhone complete with URGE and some other spyware crap.

Purchasable iPhone Ringtones are officially here, but most of you won’t want to pay $0.99 for the privilege of using a 30 second version of a song you’ve already purchased. Here are 8 alternative ways to get ringtones onto your iPhone.[...] Thanks to diskopo for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
satforever: none
CelticWarrior: I’m NEVER updating from 7.4
Once i read 7.4.1 broke the free ringtones, i haven’t updated.
Apple can suck it. .
h377r1d3r: 9th way: Sell iPhone, but a Phone
JOHNNYNUKEM: … and to think I payed money to download Crazy Frog
/sigh
thefinger: That’s all we need… helping people create more shitty annoying ringtones.
themurph2099: Here’s another free way to get it done:
http://www.applegazette.com/site-news/introducing-iring-free-iphone-ringtones-for-all/
liquidcola: and no one can come up with one way to get them on a sidekick 3?
eugene2x: Um, iPhone is crap?
buba69: doesn’t google account for #7 and #8 and automatically disregard those efforts?
joe361: Another who gives a shit topic.
weizur: Wow a How to and a 8 ways and it’s about the iphone, this will obviously lauch to the top of digg forever!
DaveClarkOne: How many ringtones at 99 cents each is going to send you into bankruptcy?? Fuckin’ A, this is the most ridiculous kind of thread. Buried as lame. Tight screws.
lumbergh: AppTapp (which was mentioned) is amazing. The list of apps and updates is growing literally by the hour. You can now get any of the following: multiple chat clients (including Colloquy for IRC), an NES emulator, Frotz, two terminal apps, SSH, Apache (yes, on the phone), demos that use the motion sensors… etc… it’s unbelievable.
tomis: Does anyone still use those iPhone things? I mean, aren’t those sooo June 2007? Is Apple even in business anymore? It’s all about the linux phones man.
lebsoljah: so they lowered the price of the iphone but are charging shitloads of cash on their extras
the funny part is that more than 50% fall for it

A couple of PC Magazine folks met with Apple marketing honcho Greg Joswiak yesterday to talk about the new iPods, and thrillingly, he had some answers to interesting questions.[...] Thanks to geargirl for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
wageslaven: Apple says “if the updates happen to break native apps or your native apps turn your iPhone into a rutabaga, don’t go crying to Apple, ’cause it ain’t their problem. “
They dont “support” this either, they’re just smart enough to use the right language to say “mod at your own risk”. When they update the software, and it bricks your device, they’ll not be responsible.
Mathewh: ya, this is really great news. i think they want to see what the community will do with it. speaking of which, what ever happend to the microsoft origami thing?
andy2na: Hopefully this confirmation will urge authors, of already great programs, to port them to the iphone or touch. Adium PLEASE!
Lutz: This is great news, while the third part native software on the iPhone has grown, I have been a bit worried Apple will make it troublesome for the developers. Since Apple doesn’t care, the iPhone/Touch software archives will probably grow very big very fast!

Crazy Frog and iPhone fans can at last rejoice, as iTunes is now providing ringtones, just as we reported last week. You know the drill: get a 30 seconds ringtone of some of the songs you already bought in the iTunes Music Store for an extra 99 cents.[...] Thanks to UCBearcats for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
patokeefe1: This works extremely well. I don’t even mind paying the extra 99 cents because I can’t seem to throw money at Apple fast enough anyways…
crackintosh: “Could not create ringtone. An unknown error occurred (-42165). there was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later”
No thanks, I tried once, now I’ll just make my own.
imsobored151: i forgot to say that crazy frog songs are not ringtone-able
imsobored151: its not an update, but 7.4.1 has alot of features that im just finding today.
BTW
anyone have any good ringtones made already. I need a good song or two.
Lyph5: I’m not seeing it. Is it in 7.4.2? Because that’s not out yet. 7.4.1 doesn’t have this option.
pixelmatrix: strange—only like 1/15th of my music is available for ringtones

After its commercial release, the iPhone Sim Free software unlock is now under heavy attack by hackers all over the world. Even DVD Jon is after them, according to sources deep in the effort. They are advancing at a fast pace and the crack may be ready as soon as tonight. On top of that, part of the iPhone Dev Team keeps working on their own unlock[...] Thanks to yokozuka for providing this nice story on Digg.
What other users say about this:
dralter: It is already here, time to move on.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/breaking/independent-iphone-free-software-unlock-achieved-298825.php
Kakcoo: So maybe by tomorrow my iPhool is gonna turn into a real phone?
*Jumping on walls*
springo: That’s why everyone should thank them and not the guys at iPhoneSIMFree.
