OS X Dashboard Widgets running on iPhone (with screen shot)

September 17, 2007

CaptainObviousCopy /System/Library/WidgetResources over to your iPhone, install your OS X widgets into /var/root/Library/Widgets and run Widgets.app. “The Weather, ESPN and Calendar widgets are some of the best; the Flight Tracker, Dictionary and Phone Book are among the worst” in compatibility[...] Thanks to CaptainObvious for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

TexasFlood93: no matter how good your team is doing, you stick with ‘em.

blackbrutha: put this on installer please. Too lazy to ssh or ftp.

harryterry: also dugg for the NHL but seriously TexasFlood…the kings arent good anymore

Maxpower57: All the iphone is is a collection of widgets anyway.

TexasFlood93: dugg for the NHL widget. GO KINGS!

spargett: Damn, I really wanted the Dictionary to work : (

mrdude272: It’s funny…while the iPhone is cool now, it’ll be just another “razr” once every redneck, grandma and “tweenage” girl has one.

temugen: Thank you CaptainObvious.

niallabrown: People make fun of the Open Moko and say its for Linux nerds, but if you have to do this to get a simple application on iPhone…. why bother? Open Moko will be very user friendly and have tonnes of apps that you don’t have to hack to use. iPhone is pretty ridiculous. I want to OWN my phone for once.

saddino: @ravi: this is just a hack…Most widgets won’t work since they require system calls, widget plugins or other OS X-only features.

FredFredrickson: Let the uselessness commence!

digitallysick: Nice, so what are some decent widgets to use?

ravi7791: Does the translator and dictionary work? I’m going to order my iPhone tonight so I can’t test it out myself.

tim507: I thought you could put OSX widgets on it already..guess i missed that part :P

Apple’s Mistakes When Designing the iPhone

September 17, 2007

jonnkidsThey want the iPhone to stand alone as a platform, as a symbol. This is what they have already done with personal music and the iPod, the iPod is bigger than the Walkman ever was. Can the iPhone be bigger than the phone? Not so fast Apple.[...] Thanks to jonnkids for providing this nice story on Digg.

Hands on: Getting down to iWork ‘08

September 17, 2007

Mattman9876With iWork ‘08, the latest generation of its office suite, Apple has given Mac users a powerful alternative to Microsoft’s Office for Mac. This new version finally offers an alternative to Excel called Numbers, a spreadsheet tool unlike any that has come before it. It also adds some great new features to iWork’s other two applications…[...] Thanks to Mattman9876 for providing this nice story on Digg.

The .Mac Stand-Off. 4 things You Could Do Besides .Mac

September 17, 2007

obeezyMy .Mac account expires in 39 days. That’s 39 days to decide the fate of a 2 year long dependency on a service that while great, has had its share of ups and downs.[...] Thanks to obeezy for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

timusca: .Mac is a waste of money, in my opinion… I think most people stay just so they don’t have to change their email address. It doesn’t serve anything that can’t be had somewhere else, and usually for free.

Email: gmail.com
Web Hosting: tons of free places, but you can also buy hosting for a LOT cheaper than .Mac
Syncing/iDisk: box.net – 1GB for free and paid upgrades are available

Am I missing anything? .Mac really is a waste… the only thing it offers that’s good is the seamlessness it offers with OS X. But its worth a few extra clicks to me to save the money.

Note: I’m also a self-professed Apple fanboy.

eridius: The only reason I use .Mac is for the syncing, and that’s the one feature that nobody else has duplicated yet.

How many iPods could be powered by my body’s electricity?

September 17, 2007

tamarThis asks you several questions about yourself, including height, weight, and your resting heart rate. It then tells you approximately how many watts your body is producing, including how many iPods and refrigerators your body could power.[...] Thanks to tamar for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

demizer: So I am at 107 ipods… Am i fat? I think i’m going to cry…

ManuS: An here’s how to get that electricity out…

http://www.econvergence.net/electro.htm

SuperMikel: If i am 97% over average i want to know what the average is because i put in the stats for someone who had a 60 heart beats per minute, weighed 135, 5 ft 7 inches, and was 16 years old. But this person was still over average, i mean how can someone like this be over average?

theratdotus: how can you get the watts out of your body into a wire?

kknater: My high score is 648 Watts, anyone get higher than that?

spartin92: Your Body is Producing 289 Watts!
This is 45% MORE wattage than the average person
You could light up 3 light bulbs
You could power 72 iPods
You could power 1 Xbox 360
3 of you would be needed to keep a refrigerator running

now my life is complete :)

ItsMyWii: I can run 2 360z! Now I can play Halo 3 twice at the same time!

Midnitte: Over 9,000 µWatts!

341 watts isnt bad huh?

Acqua206: For all of you guys with extremely high wattage, I’m guess you have a high resting heart rate, which means your out of shape and that your heart isn’t working very efficiently. Not something to be so very proud of.

YojimboJango: I generate 104% more electricity than a normal person?
weird…

fxu1989: Your Body is Producing 433 Watts!
This is 117% MORE wattage than the average person

* You could light up 4 light bulbs
* You could power 108 iPods
* You could power 2 Xbox 360s
* 2 of you would be needed to keep a refrigerator running

I’m a big guy .. what can I say :x

maxpower17@digg: 92

Ozzy73: I can power 2 refrigerators =’( I think I should cut back on red bull and McD’s

tmalloy: 78 ipods

BossKey: I could have saved some money if I could plug myself in between my computer and the wall instead of buying that UPS…

Mirror Your Mac onto a Bootable External Drive

September 17, 2007

mklopezIf and when that terrible day your Mac dies finally catches up to you, you can be back up and running with all your applications, system preferences, settings and data in under 5 seconds with a bootable system clone.[...] Thanks to mklopez for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

girafx: Save yourself the $30 and use Carbon Copy Cloner (bombich dot com)

sudowrestler: My method is to make a periodic clone to a USB drive with the free version of SuperDuper, and separate daily automated backups of my home directory with the free Lacie SilverKeeper, with the music folder excepted. The home folder backup just takes a couple minutes. This way data will always be just about current.

copper7op: i’ll start doing this now!! i’ve had an old 120gb usb drive kicking around and now i have a use for it

scgf: To backup your bootcamp partition download the free app ‘BartPE’ which will create a bootable Windows CD, and install DriveImageXML (do a Google search for both). Once you have the bootable CD, boot your Mac with it and simply backup your Bootcamp partition using DriveImageXML to an external USB/Firewire drive. I bought a small 2.5″ hard drive and a USB enclosure from eBay – very cheap. I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro hard drive and was back in business very quickly using SuperDuper and BartPE.

dyranios2: Yeah I do this once a month (with superduper) so if for whatever reason I lose all my data on my harddrive I will never be a month at most out of date, it helps me sleep at night. :)

otomo: My solution is to have a 20G partition for the os (/ for you unix guys) and to throw in the other partition as /Users (all users added, overlay mount).

Then I only backup the os partition with disk utility before I install point updates, and rsync the other partition every few days or so, it is a cron job. Seems to work fine. Of course this involves the voodoo that is the command line.

paulgrunt: SuperSuper is an excellent backup solution for mac. I’ve been using it for about a year and its been invaluable for me. Easily the fastest most convienient backup solution.

shaggypaul: dd ftw

nycmac247: use target disk mode and Disk Utility, maybe?
also – Intel macs can boot from USB – as long as they are formatted right

deepblue: Will Superduper or CCC include the Parallels virtual machines too?

Bikechess: One caveat: I don’t think this strategy works if you have your computer encrypted with FileVault – you can no longer boot up from the duplicate drive. This, at least, is my experience. Our IT department is now forcing us to use encryption – effectively destroying my excellent backup strategy. The encryption is really effective, too, since my password is “enter”

totorototoro: What would make SuperDuper! truly amazing would be if it could back up the BootCamp partition seamlessly as well. As it is, you’ll need to use DiskUtility to make a disk image of that to back it up as well. SuperDuper! is pretty great otherwise, however.

jabberwolf: LIE in title!
Back up in 5 seconds? Um maybe differential or incremental.
Second mirroring is not new, well maybe for Apple it is.

dupeduperson: I am surprised no one has mentioned carbon copy cloner. Pretty good software. I use it to do the same thing. In the past I tried superduper, but I can’t remember why I use carbon copy cloner instead.

bingobongony: i hate it when my Mac dies finally catches up to me

Bill Maher Rips iPhone Fanboys a New One

September 17, 2007

mklopezLeave it to Bill Maher to bring us down to earth about the frickin’ iPhone. Thanks, Bill. We needed that. Well, at least the “nerd tax” was reduced by $100.[...] Thanks to mklopez for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

mikehill33: which video is it?

I got a list of all his video clips…which would be a useless Digg submission.

jsp317: Now that was funny. I don’t care who you are. I know i have damn sure got burned wanting the latest and greatest. It’s the price we pay.

britoca: Fuck Apple

DeathChill: I can’t believe how overly angry many of you are getting. He’s making a joke about the truth of the situation, not personally attacking any of you…

haroldk: Why do people legitimize Maher’s mean-spirited, sarcastic humor?

It figures that he dated Ann Coulter.
http://www.nndb.com/people/399/000022333/

wageslaven: Maher misses his description of the iphone user, givnig them a compliment by calling them nerds, geeks or the informed early-adopter.

Apple users are hipster wanna-be yuppies who buy overpriced fashion products on credit.

PaulOnion: Billy Boy can be an AssFace @ times but there are moments of truths between his lop-sided rants…

BeingHuman: You all lose, Bill included. http://www.javierzanetti.net/Handoyo/Pictures/070319%20Special%20Olympics.jpg

BeingHuman: You all lose, including you, Bill.

http://www.javierzanetti.net/Handoyo/Pictures/070319%20Special%20Olympics.jpg

willgonz: He’s the type of guy that would camp out for Yanni tickets.

combustion8: Bill’s a douche as are iPhone fanboys.

CraigJ: Bill Maher = Liberal Bill o’Reilly

chuckufarley: the iPhone slides in and out of my wife’s neopolitan cheerio nicely! much like the toy dolphin from my Sealab 2021 playset….thanks UW so·ror·i·ties

jptolife: The thing is that the iPhone keeps getting talked about. People can’t seem to be able to live without the iPhone anymore. Lol people need lives… Yes the truth hurts.

kaiwai: What I love; in every comedy there is a perl of wisdom that can’t be ignored. Lets remember folks; this is just a phone, another phone with new fancy features that slowly become so-so after a few hours/days/months of usage. I find it funny that people are offended over someones comments regarding a phone.

Come on guys (used in a non-genders specific sense), are there people that attached to a device/company that they need to spam forums with mouth foaming abuse? talk about a need for a life.

Apple event tomorrow at 10:00AM BST / 5:00AM EDT, set your alarms (really!)

September 17, 2007

lisaphamEuropeans have been waiting in constant anticipation since June 29th to hear when and in what form their version of the iPhone will take. The rumors pretty much revolve around which carriers in which regions will get the phone, with a hint of speculation about a 3G update in HSDPA and UMTS rife Europe.[...] Thanks to lisapham for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

britoca: buried for “FUCK YOU JOBS!” Stupid non-environmental trend setting motherfucker! Why don’t u design shit that doesn’t brake or is upgradable instead of stuff that trequires a new purchase each time? FUCK APPLE

alperea: I already know what they’re gonna do. The same thing as always. Just rename something that always exists, give it a shiny gradient, and call it a revolutioin.

FlohEinstein: Dugg down since it’s over – and we got no 3G. You can keep that version of the phone, Mr. Jobs, I’ll be waiting for v2.

freaktheclown: Some highlights:

Q: Is unlocking a concern?
Steve: “It’s a constant cat and mouse game — we have the same thing with the iPod with music.” Steve looks at Matthew, “Are we the cat or mouse?” ‘We have to stay one step ahead of them.”

Q: Were you aware that the iPod touch was coming out when you were negotiating the iPhone deal?
Steve: “Well, one’s a phone, and one’s not. The iPod touch is training wheels for the iPhone.” Ha! Oh boy, that’s rich.

Q: Why not 3G networks?
Steve: “The 3G chipsets are real power hogs. Handset battery life cuts power to 2-3 hours.” Yeah yeah, we’ve heard it before. “Our phone has a talk time of 8 hours and that’s really important when you want to use your phone for internet and music. 3G needs to get back up to 5+ hours, something we think well see later next year. … WiFi is way faster than any 3G network. Energy efficient EDGE with better, faster WiFi. That’s why we chose it.”

Q: What are your plans for iPhone launch in Europe, and your reaction to upsetting other carriers who feel played-off in terms of not getting this deal?
Steve: “We said we’d be in a few countries in Europe and we still plan to do that. As to the carriers, we took the approach to see who would be the best fit — it’s like going out on a few dates before getting married. So yeah, we have a few upset girlfriends out there.”

sonycam: I wonder how Apple will take the European iPhone launch. In the UK at least, we have a completely different mobile (cell) phone market. Most new phones which cost $800 without a contract are completely free if used on contract (substadised by the network carriers). So if iPhone is seriously looking to compete, they won’t be able to charge the same amount as the US release because people can get too much more for their money. I expect it to be locked to O2, but I don’t mind that, there isn’t really a ‘hated’ network carrier here like AT&T is, I would be using O2 anyway.

domyates: yes we’ve been waiting with constipation

sundby: “Europeans have been waiting in constant anticipation”

We have? Really…?

batmant: “Over the last two weeks the new iPods have done remarkably well. Look at these numbers. Wonderful. Today…we’re replacing every one of them. Boom.”

erikhensarling: Wake me if they say anything about Leopard. Yawn.

toetagger: Their going to announce a fix for the iPod Touch! Alert the press!

podgey22: > Europeans have been waiting in constant anticipation since June 29th

Have we? I don’t give a toss if they release the iPhone here.. Why? Because Nokia don’t bend me over and do be from behind when I modify my n95… And the n95 was free on a 18 month contract =)

Ellipsys: Something to keep in mind: To the best of my knowledge, Europe and Asian band 3G operates at 2100mhz. We run ours on 1900. This is why many imported phones that are supposed to be HDSPA, are little more than edge here. If apple is serious about an iPhone for Europe/Asia, then they will put the 3G capability on this band – thus making it useless for us to import. So feel angry we won’t get better phones, or feel relieved that the ones bought all ready aren’t totally obsolete.

totorototoro: Only wake me up if the after hours stock price drops below 130 because of the announcement, whatever it is :P

mobilehavoc: Lets hope they don’t wait until the end of the day to release the next iPhone update

bingo000: How about giving the iPod touch an upgrade and lets call it an iPhone with 3G?

4 Free iPhoto Tools You Need To Have On Your Mac.

September 17, 2007

obeezyHow about those little utilities for iPhoto that really make it a cool and fun Mac utility? Not that there’s anything wrong with iPhoto. It’s not Photoshop and Bridge and needs a little help.[...] Thanks to obeezy for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

DanielNielsen: Im still waiting for a Pixelmator final release

MrManFitz: You all fail.

Konstantinopol: I’m a new mac user, and has just finished importing my 15GB photo-collection to iPhoto.

Kelmon: I’m surprised to see that FlickrExport from Fraser Speirs doesn’t appear on the list as I thought this plug-in was mandatory if you use Yahoo!’s Flickr service (http://connectedflow.com/flickrexport/iphoto/).
Article is buried since I don’t believe that any of those add-ons are in any way essential, particularly in the ‘08 version of iPhoto.

HunterTV: Really stunning comments guys. Well done.

mp3dog: Why in the world would you need to create separate photo libraries?
Isn’t that what albums are for???

theprez: WTF…? I feel so stupid not knowing that holding down Option while opening iTunes or iPhoto allows me to choose or create another library. It’s a feature I always thought was missing to separate work stuff with personal stuff. Since when has this existed?

iparker: no bullets to identify the “must have” tools for iphoto? fuck that, show me something clearly or i’m moving on.

fangorious: Not quite on-topic, but other than QuickTime Pro or the cfx iMovie plugin, how can I rotate video clips? The cfx iMovie plugin seems to want to crop when it rotates.

willwork4ammo: Keyword assistant is no longer supported in iPhoto ‘08.
From the req’s section:
Keyword Assistant does not support iPhoto 7 (from iLife ‘08), and I have no plans to support it in the future for one happy reason: iPhoto’s native keyword interface is now good enough that Keyword Assistant is not necessary! Yay!

macbth: I got to try out some of these add – ons

h00ligan: Here I was just using iPhoto thinking.. thank god it’s not Adobe Bridge. Like i need to deal with that, every time i want to show someone some trip pics.

NeonElixir: Meh.

TurboBeard: Frames? Glamour shots? That site looks like it was from 1995 so I can’t read the article.
Eat it.

bhalash: Don’t forget Lightroom. It adds all those handy tools iPhoto simply don’t have.

The iPod meets the iPhone: a review of the iPod touch

September 17, 2007

zaibatsuApple has drastically overhauled the iPod with the release of the iPod touch. Ars goes hands-on with the latest iteration of the world’s top-selling digital audio player line to determine if the iPod touch is anything more than an iPhone without the phone.[...] Thanks to zaibatsu for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

LittleDas: Actually it looks like they give two different resolutions within the same article.
Nice proofreading guys.

LittleDas: According to wikipedia, the resolution isn’t 640×480 it’s 480×320, the same as the iPhone
I’m willing to believe wikipedia but does anyone else have other information?

astrosmash: The thing that bothers be about the iPod touch is that it’s not so much the next-gen iPod as a crippled iPhone.

Take the iPod classic. With a 80 GB drive I can store my entire music collection, my entire photo library, I can backup my MacBook, and I can throw a few Family Guy episodes on there to boot. *That* is how you get the most out of the hardware, and it feels good.

Compare that with the touch (or iPhone jr., as I think of it), a device that is intentionally crippled. The disabled calendar really takes the cake, and I fear it’s a harbinger of things to come. And with the lack of any certainty regarding 3rd-party applications, it’s very hard to get behind the touch. Not to mention that capacity-wise it’s hardly a replacement for my 4G iPod.

I love my iPod because I’ve gotten a ridiculous amount of use out of it over the last three years, but when I look at the touch all I see is the stuff that isn’t there.

RagnerD: I love the new generation of iPods. I just wish I didn’t need to choose between the massive storage of the Classic and sex appeal of the Touch. They are both lickable.

If you need lyrics or art for iTunes/iPod try this plugin. http://soundcrank.com

thesledman: I think a large part of the disappointment or lack of features people feel is due to the iPhone coming out before the touch. The iPod touch is the next generation iPod. The iPhone is the touch with “smart-phone” features. Jobs billed the iPhone as the “Best iPod Ever” meaning it was a cell phone combined with the iPod touch interface. It needed to have smart-phone features to compete with phones of that price range. The added fact that iPhone guaranteed 24hr Internet connectivity (EDGE) including email makes sense. I think if the touch came out prior the the iPhone people wouldn’t have been so disappointed. Although honestly I can see Apple addressing the calendar and email in the touch. Not sure if the LCD issue can be addressed via software though. Steve Jobs likes to cripple things at first, then un-cripple them and look like a hero.

jdaniel284: I’m sick of Apple articles. We know already… the new iPods are a disappointment. Let’s move on now.

SN3AKattack: Wait, wait, wait… hold on a second… “The iPod touch is the first digital audio player to ship with a full-featured web browser and support for watching YouTube.”
That right there, is complete bull#%$@. Now if they had said that it was “the first digital audio player from Apple”, it would be true.
I’m sorry but the Archos 605 WiFi may not be as innovative but it certainly beat the Touch to release of a PMP with WiFi.

Christbait: Might as well rename this site to iDigg given the abundance of Apple topics, all on one page

ZebraCrew: Goddamn! I consider myself an Apple Fanboy but this will be the fourth iPod Touch article that I’ve buried (and there have been others I left alone). How many reviews of this thing do we need to see? Enough with this shit!

eddielement: If you read carefully enough, the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store..LACKS PODCASTS!

xandifenn: check out seeqpod on the ipod
http://seeqpod.com/iphone

MonkeyHugger: Good review. The screen problems really are stupid though. Quality control sucks at apple.

fixty: I have to say, I was excited about the Iphone, would have probably bought one if it wasn’t tied to ATT. Then excited about Ipod Touch. Almost ordered one, but the screen issues/crippled features/ no bluetooth/low storage nixed that idea. Now I just wish Apple had never released the Iphone and had instead made a 160GB Ipod Touch with bluetooth and a mic and a VOIP app. I would have paid $599 for that INSTANTLY. Now, dammit, more waiting… I don’t know, maybe Cowon’s D2 will get wifi/voip… can someone please do this right?! DAMMIT APPLE!

happyman987: This is the most well rounded review from any site I’ve read, Ars Technica didn’t get emotional with the device like some other users. If you want to know the truth about the touch, look no further.

miniboss: It really isn’t a “What if the iPod and iPhone had a baby” scenario because the iPod Touch has very little relation to the older iPods. More accurately, this is “What if you cut off your iPhones arms and legs” because the Touch could easily have been much better but Apple marketing decided that forcing the device to be inferior would be in THEIR best interest.
