Fix a cracked iPhone screen on the cheap

September 18, 2007

vergeWhen Ars reviewed the iPhone, we found that it was surprisingly durable—not only was it very scratch-resistant, the glass screen didn’t really crack until we started being very rough with it.[...] Thanks to verge for providing this nice story on Digg.

Jobs confirms 3G iPhone for 2008

September 18, 2007

digitalgopherApple promises 3G iPhone for 2008 and you can expect a 3G iPhone later next year…[...] Thanks to digitalgopher for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

jhnshft: I think its shocking how many people are surprised by this. I mean come on we know this is how Apple rolls. They are like technology drug dealers. With that said, my Verizon contract runs out in May.

redfuzzycow: ahh thank you massa jobs, thank you ::bows repeatedly::

skyzyx: Inaccurate. He never says “3G by 2008″, but rather that “3G + Battery = Sucks.”

corsa: Here is a video of Steve Jobs answering the 3G question at the UK event. You watch this and hear EXACTLY what he says about the 3G iPhone.

(spoiler: he says he hopes the 3G chipsets with acceptable power consumption will be available “late next year”)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Gyq0lTubjk

tony.pitale: Buried for inaccurate and spam. Pocketlint just quoted the lines from the presentation that anyone could have read on Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/18/live-from-apples-mum-is-no-longer-the-word-event-in-london/

On top of that, I don’t see where he said that 3G is coming next year. I see where he says “we’re working on the next one and the next one” but, anyone could have guessed that Apple would not have been resting on their laurels. Of course they’re working on the next one.

blogger123: I want it to be 3g sooo badly, cause where I live we have blanket 3g coverage, its _everywhere_ and even if I imported an iPhone, I wouldn’t get high speed browsing, so the fact that Mad-Dog has confirmed it is very reassuring

roberto_deneero: And in other news….Microsoft is hiring additional programmers to push Windows 98 SP37 out the door by year end.

norm78: In other news the 3G iPhone has been unlocked!!!!

xthroughmyeyesx: Wow, are you serious? I JUST ordered an iPhone two days ago and this announcement comes out… amazing. I’m going to personally fight Steve Jobs.

mavedatthews85: Whoopty-shit. They should be confirming 30 and 60 gig iPhones for me to care.

macpro2006: ERRR!! I just got my iPhone. Why! I don’t have the money to buy the new one!

beerbarron: Whoever said battery life was less important than having 3G is a fool, can you imagine being in a phone conversation with a client and boom the battery goes, because you only have 2 hours worth of battery? No thanks…

ozziek: Cool. This means by about 2012 we *should* get an iPhone that has 3G, GPS, MMS, 3rd party app support, development API and a 3 megapixel camera with video calling. Sweet – I’ll be able to blog about how retro it is on my Nokia thought controlled 5G implant phone ;)

blacklilyninja: cell data service in canada is ungodly expensive. apple needs to make the carrier comply to a unlimited data plan. I hope its telus but i fear it will be rogers.

bawpcwpn: Just to save time and cut out the repeated comments such as “Bring the iPhone to Canada”, why don’t we just say, “Bring the iPhone to the rest of the world!”

iPhone v1.1.1 Feature Breakdown (8 and counting)

September 18, 2007

batmantEngadget got their hands on v1.1.1 iPhones at Apple’s London event this morning. I thought I would breakdown the 8 new features I have gathered from examining there photos.[...] Thanks to batmant for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

12340987: no a2dp?

mrblaack: until they add voice dialing i’m not interested.

thesutex: carrier menu doesnt mean anything.. just that you can select which operator to roam on when abroad.. nothing more.. its still locked down.. this is a feature on every locked down phone from any manufacturer..

ohsnapitsbrown: “Network setup with VPN support”

It already has this.. I hope that this means it’s being updated. I (along with many, many other people) have been waiting for Cisco VPN support. Anyone know?

GhostFreeman: This might seem silly, but Semacode support would be nice.

giddytonk: I sure wish Notes would sync…or maybe I don’t know how? I have some great notes on my iPhone, but I don’t have a way to email, sync, or print the notes. Seems like it would not be too hard to sync to Stickies or simple text files on a PC/Mac.

batmant: I would like to see stability added to Safari. Anyone else get a minimum two crashes a day?

go5go: Version one needs some improvements.. Lots of things would be useful..
A quick fix to the sms/mms thing would actually be on the carrier side. When I receive an MMS photo it tells me to go to some website and put in all this crap. Make it so I can just tap it to open safari and have the login and password inputted for me.. That would be the easiest quick fix.
To send, you can always email directly to your friends phone using their carrier’s mms email. Not a huge deal.
Multiple SMS can be sent, but you have to type in the numbers manually.
An Email Accounts “Home” Button to go back to the main account selection screen.. That is my biggest pain for switching between email account views.

mateo60: More importantly for me, from that article I just learned that I can double tap the space and get a period with a space on my Blackberry. I did NOT know that and I’m nerdily exited now.

celeronxl: Why are they right-aligning the iTunes icon? That looks terrible.

Original pictures of the iPhone lacking the YouTube icon demonstrated left-alignment. Why the change?

ggore: Everyone keeps bitching about not having a 3G iPhone, and Jobs said yesterday they would have one in a year or so, but where would you use the thing??? 3G is only available in a very few places in the U.S.

BobOki: I would like to see MUCH better integration with exchange, such as syncing contacts, calendars, etcetc over the internet (like activesync).
I would like a way to switch applications without closing them.
Copy/paste would be grand.
Have control over the bluetooth profile (for a2dp) would be totally awesome, and I am shocked it is not working already. I would LOVE to listen to music over my bluetooth.
I would like to record video.
I would like to send sms and MMS to multiple recipients.

vvaduva: When will they make the e-mail reader app better? I don’t need new calculator icons…I need better functionality! Improve e-mail clients, add some sort of wireless syncing option so I don’t have to haul usb cables with me everywhere and for crying out loud, add some voice dialing support!!

emt1451: Arghhh what are you waiting for Apple? RELEASE IT ALREADY!!!

lifeinanalog: and there goes the 3rd party application support.

iPhone UK: The News so Far

September 18, 2007

1KrazyKoreanSo here are the basics about the iPhone launch in the UK, as announced by Steve Jobs in London. It was a pretty utilitarian affair with a predictable demo by Jobs of the iPhone’s features, an announcement about the carrier, a chat from the O2 CEO Matthew Key (pictured next to Jobs), and some Q&A.[...] Thanks to 1KrazyKorean for providing this nice story on Digg.

Disappearing $100 iPhone Store Credit: The Solution

September 18, 2007

diskopoWe’ve been getting reports of people’s $100 iPhone gift certificate actually having a balance of $0 when they go to use it. And by reports, we mean myself. It happened to me. But there’s actually a solution![...] Thanks to diskopo for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

caponumen: You crapple fans are worse than crack freaks. But your brilliant exploitation’s never fails to amuse me. That $100 store credit is worth about $10 – tax in the real world…..

toetagger: Open letter to Steve Jobs: What the fuck, dude?

SBeckstrand: u people are all cry babies.

if microsoft was as cool as apple they’d over price
without a second blink too. we just all know microsoft is gay :)

Sidzilla: I have to say I’m amazed. Jobs basically screws over every early adopter who buys his crappy phone, drops the price $200 bucks but only gives the whiny fanboys $100 ‘credit’ which will get them about $25 worth of actual merchandise on the over priced Apple store, and then proceeds to screw that up, also. If Microsoft pulled something like this the Gates haters would be rolling out the big guns, but if you dare to besmirch the sterling character of Stevie Jobs, why, you must be a neanderthal. What a bunch of losers. I hate fanboys of both camps, but come on people. You are taking it up the butt from Jobs, and now he is denying you the reacharound.

silentex: I’m always amazed at what people bitch about. You buy an iPhone, Apple gives you $100 for doing so, and then you have the audacity to complain. Grow up.

cjwl: Wasn’t there a fairly recent story about someone who had a $1000+ store credit gift card from a return that became worthless ?
Sounds like Apple’s gift card system is broken, either fundamentally, or prone to theft. avoid.

mikesbaker: here is a solution – STFU about how you paid extra money to be an early adopter (AKA chump) so you could feel better than other people who weren’t stupid enough to pay a 50% mark up.

KenIovino: This is to weed out the dumb and lazy people who don’t want to go through the trouble all over again to get the credit. It’s the same thing when you get a rebate from BestBuy. They know a good percentage of people won’t use it, or go through the trouble; so it saves the company money. You should be happy that their even giving you credit.

Thanks for posting, I didn’t have any trouble personally. I qualified for the price protection, so I got the difference put back on my credit card.

almeidaalmeida7: I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS EQUIPMENT IN MY SITE

Slovenian6474: “…But there’s actually a solution!”

Bitch some more.

pukufek: “Putting aside any complaints about whether or not Apple should have given people that $100 gift certificate”

They shouldnt have.

yomamaisfat: Shoplifting is always an option.

insomniac8400: Apple screw something up, no way!

digjam: NOT A BAD MRKTING STRATEGY….OBVSLY TO GET INTO NEWS..!

Remote Control Your Computer with Your iPhone

September 18, 2007

mklopezYou could spend hundreds of dollars on a multimedia remote with a touchscreen interface, glorious album art, and all of the fixings, but if you’ve already got an iPhone, you really don’t need to. Today I’ll show you a number of ways you can use the iPhone to remote control everything from iTunes playback to your Windows or Mac desktops.[...] Thanks to mklopez for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

penguincentral: How interesting…

Hey, the only reason that this is popular is because it’s the iPhone. If it was some other crappy phone, then this wouldn’t have even made the front page.

dewar2002: remote buddy does all of this very well, but you have to pay for it after 30 days. waiting for serialz.to to catch up to recent release.
http://www.iospirit.com/remotebuddy/

pruppert: These are awesome. Perfect companion to the wireless Airtunes on Airport Express.

80hd: I think a cool iPhone/Touch feature would be to pick up on shared libraries while your on your home network and let you swap out music automagically. Not that it’d be fun to pick music by hand but if you use smart playlists this could be really cool since new tunes would load up just by coming home.

bloominoctober: Why not just use RDM+ to remotely control your computer?

http://www.rdmplus.com

toetagger: Am I missing something?
http://www.ipresents.co.uk/a/i/stuff/apple-remote.jpg
Oh, yeah- you got a PC.

Grimdotdotdot: “You could spend hundreds of dollars on a multimedia remote with a touchscreen interface, glorious album art, and all of the fixings, but if you’ve already got an iPhone, you really don’t need to.”
… Because you already have.

acnx: you can full remote control your pc wuth Symbian phones too and a small app installed :
http://axtmag.com/2007/09/19/use-your-phone-to-remote-control-your-pc/

stratdog25: Yeah… i remember being able to do this 2 years ago on my Treo650… oh yeah it has a great nintendo emulator on it. can the iphone get 33 lives on contra?

WiseWeasel: Now if only I could control my AppleTV from my iPhone…

jdubsss: I wonder if these people bashing the iPhone’s touchscreen have much experience with other touch screen products. Personally, I have digital touch screen pads all throughout my home, my navigation system in my car is touch screen, and I have remote controls that are touch screen. The iPhone is by FAR the best touch screen I have ever used, and the keyboard is actually quite simple once you’ve played around with it for a week.

pezholio: I’ve been able to do that for ages on my non-iphone. Nice little app called Salling Clicker that connects via Bluetooth. Combined with a radio transmitter I’ve got access to my iTunes library all over the house. Go me!

JohnnyXmas: MISLEADING. It only lets you control very specific actions remotely.

Not to be “that guy,” but WindowsCE had Terminal Services since v 3.0, and WM5 has VNC apps for total PC control.

hugehead83: Not to bash the iPhone, but PPC/smartphone users have been able to do this for over 2 years (see logmein.com). They can also watch their TV tuners (and record video from their phones) all for free. iPhone people need to get over the hype.
Cheers VolnoX.

notjamt9000: For amarok you could use the “Web Control” script, works ok on the Nokia N800 so I imagine it would on an iPhone, although I don’t know about the screen size. Of course the N800 has VNC too so I can also use that.

Apple Confirms O2 as UK iPhone Partner

September 18, 2007

geekchicO2 has been confirmed as the launch partner for Apple’s iPhone in the UK. Speaking at a press conference this morning, Apple boss Steve Jobs said “We are coming to the UK and wanted to pick the best carrier and that is O2,”[...] Thanks to geekchic for providing this nice story on Digg.

Apple iPhone To Be in the UK on Nov. 9 on O2!

September 18, 2007

glbanksitterApple just confirmed the UK launch date and carrier![...] Thanks to glbanksitter for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

MakJak: They should launch their mobile phone early, because festival is near to come. anyways i found a best 3 mobile phone contract deal website. where i found cheap three pay monthly mobile phones. http://www.3mobilephonedeal.co.uk/

j1gs4w: Why are they advertising “Unlimited Data”? The O2 CEO at the press conference already said it would contain a fair usage policy! Why can’t they be honest for once?

AccuraCast: I think network locks suck. Mobile phone handsets should be usable across networks, just like all regular TV models can show all regular broadcast channels. Mobile network operators have too much power and hold their cards to close to their chest. Rather anti-competitive in many ways.

parbjohal: The American AT&T tariffs are better.

- At the lower end tariff – more talk minutes
- Free minutes roll over!!
- Unlimited mobile to mobile!

I personally think this is less about the phones ability, and more about the choice of tariff.

I’ve been using a Samsung D900 for a while now, and that has no 3G – and i dont notice that my occasional web searches etc are horrendously slow. I would much prefer to have a device when I’m out in a bar / cafe / friends & family homes where i can jump onto a wifi signal to check my mail etc etc.

Even if I’m doing those ’slow’ web searches over EDGE – I’ll be happier the experience is at least ‘the full web’ via safari, giving me a much better (albeit slightly slower) mobile web experience.

Also, europeans love to send text messages, most people will use 200 free texts halfway through a new month.

I’ve owned many phones… personally, I cant remember the last time I needed to replace my battery. So I can’t understand peoples need to be constantly removing / replacing the battery. What I have had to do with almost every phone is buy 2nd wall charger! 1 for home / 1 for on the road – Apple could have bucked the trend even further by simply supplying a 2nd charger!!!

I’m holding out on the hope that o2 are holding out on all the tariff information…Right now. the iPhone tariffs look incredibly dated – and I can imagine all those people who might be calling Orange, Vodafone et al to try and escape their contracts in the coming days will be easily retained by those companies by simply telling them ‘we’ll give you more for your money…’

beerbarron: People argue which the best provider is, o2 has been good to me, even as a pay and go customer, they have given me 50 pounds off new phones for the last 4 years, coverage in my area is good, isnt so with orange or vodaphone. As for the product itself, the jesus phone is a status symbol through and through….still want one though. Edge sucks, but like the interview said 3g would drain the battery to much, they could of made the device thicker and included more battery life, but I guess apple wanted a slim device. I think what a lot of people fail to get is that most people dont care about 3g accept for those that know what it is, which is a very small proportion. I know if I had the choice of 3g or wifi and edge I’d go for wi fi and edge.

sspooner: Lot of whiners here today. Probably the same people that predicted the US flop of the iPhone. All my “well off” buddies in the UK are waiting for these with cash in hand. Not only that, but I’m shipping my buddy in Australia an unlocked one this week. The haters just don’t get it.

robmarcer: I was planning on ditching my 60gb ipod video and my Ericsson w880i and getting an iPhone but it’s just too big of a compromise, even if it was free on contract (like almost all phones are in the UK) I’d be unsure due to the long list of missing features (3G, bluetooth modem, decent size memory). The touch isn’t really that much better than my old iPod (for any use I make of it). I can’t see how the iPhone can work in the UK with this price and feature set.

synagence: Think i would also like to wait a while for iPhone to see how the cat and mouse thing progressed …. i know whatever apple throws at iphone hackers will sooner or later circumvent … just like PSP … but i’d like to see this unlocking software survive a couple of firmware updates before i threw down cash on something which could be deactivated at any time

SuperSunny: JUST UNLOCK THE FUCKING PHONE

rick2k: why do O2 suck?

They suck becuase for the 1 year i did have a contract with them:
50%+ text messages failed to send or did send but didnt arrive to the other phone untill 6 hours later
Customer service is non existant
Reception drops out all over the place (hey i live 30 mins from london)

It just stinks… Orange, T-Mobile and virgin are the only decent networks in my experiance

DaviDaviDaviD: iPhone in the UK? Why am I not excited. Although I am currently on 02 it’s just the memory, I was really hoping for the 16gb. No 3g which is also disappointing :( Looks like I will be getting a touch then!

silviu-lucian: I can’t wait for it to come out in Romania.

I’m such a fanboy, it makes me sick just thinking about it!

IggyPop: That’s great that the UK got the iPhone. We’d like to see it up in Canada too. Apple and Rogers need to get together and make this happen.

BingeBoy: You are all bitches! hack it to another card or shut the F(*&#! up! g3 will be in the next full gen god chill you still got wifi.

finknottle: Ditto on O2 being the worst network. Stick with my e61i thanks.

Live from Apple’s “Mum is no longer the word” event in London

September 18, 2007

Otto-MateEngadget’s live coverage of the UK iPhone launch…[...] Thanks to Otto-Mate for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

rydadi: FEEL FREE TO WATCH NEW MOVIES

http://piwak.com watch free new movies like spiderman III
the transformers, fantastic 4, harry potter, die hard and next,
the simpsons..NEWEST MOVIE RUSH HOUR 3..Watch Free 4300 Live Internet TV Worldwide!!

joker3001: If your walking around the UK with an IPhone, everyone will know you got bent over for it!!!

Lueng: ok,It’ already here in China ,we had reinvented iphone into several versions ,such as M8,icrazy and ilove. And is pretty cheap and poisoned

beerbarron: Digg me down all you like, weather you think its fair or not. All your bitching isnt going to change the fact it will sell. its not just apple fan boys that will buy it, techies will want their mitts on it. I would be interested to see if this can tie into exchange server, and if it will support google apps, if both of these are a yes, then I can see this as a perfect little tool for my needs

elai: Do you get unlimited data with your other plans in the UK? Thats probably where the price difference is comming in

Mushirooms: by Pooley 6 hours ago
So, let me just get this clear:
1) I’ve got to pay the £269 ($535) for my UK iPhone
2) I’ve got to change providers
3) I’ve got to pay a higher monthly tarrif than I do now…
4) … and for that I get a lower connection speed
5) I’ve got to sign a contract for 18 months
6) Total cost of ownership for my iPhone is £900 in the next 18 months
7) No MMS 8) No 3G/HSPDA (although you’ve probably covered that in 4)
9) You probably can’t accept any files, images or ANYTHING else from anyone wanting to legitimately blue-tooth you something
10) You can’t install 3rd party apps without hacking (and possibly bricking it)

AND youve got to be 18 to get the contract in the first place? THIS IS INSANE. I love Apple, even tho those ‘Genius’ couldnt figure out tht my battery had died and had to run a test for 18 days. YES 18 DAYS! And my ipod has lasted 2 years without nothing going wrong, bt £900 for 18 months on up to £1260, its insanity to even consider buying this if your a regular consumer. They’ve signed their own death warrant, no one is going to buy into this unless theyve won the lottery.

Thanks Apple

explodingtree: Mum is no longer the word. I must say, in regards to this article, everybody’s heard about the bird, bird is the word.

bobbilljoe: There are much better phones than the iphone (especially in europe)

this is a big waste of money

samste: Now i’m certain to get a touch instead of an iPhone

aduzik: I’m so jealous that British customers are getting free WiFi access, too. AT&T has some sort of lame-ass WiFi service in the US, don’t they? Granted, the O2 tariffs start at least $10 more than the US rate plans and for fewer minutes, too.

Christbait: This iPhone nonsense is going to completely flop in this country.

What a load of crap, £269 and a £35+ monthly fee for nothing more than a nice looking phone that is extremely limited in features? Sort it out, and take note: Just because we’re not American doesn’t mean we’re absolutely blind & naive Apple-loving lemmings who go crazy at the mention of a new product.

I’m really starting to dislike this corporation more and more.

Jonny0stars: There joking right ?

lysdexia: I think at that price and for that wonderfully generous contract, the whyphone will be a rip-roaring success for A££le Corp. I predict they will grab 0.00000001% of the UK market in the first year of launch.

What a bunch of merchant bankers…

CharlesDance: i’m going to steal one then unlock it

cygnus2112: I’ll wait on getting an iPhone until I’m able to hack one to insert a user-friendly touch button that instantly kills other iPhone users and records their death screams so I can play them over and over.

HOW TO: Fix a broken iPhone glass screen for $5.

September 18, 2007

EpicSAWith so many people breaking their iPhone screens. It is a good time for a guide to show us all how to fix it without spending an additional $250. All you need is a couple hours and $5.[...] Thanks to EpicSA for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

shoook: Here’s a link if you’re work or school blocks somethingawful; http://www.zzoop.com/index.php?=&=http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2629249

shoook: Could I get a mirror? It looks like my university blocks this site.

TheUberDork: why does the author of this article sound so much like the author of that damn “essay written while high” article that has been floating around the internet for the past few years (and recently made it onto the first page of top stories in the past 24 hours)?

also there only seem to be 4 steps.

but it only takes one to avoid cracking your screen: don’t put your god damn keys or change in the same pocket as your phone. I’ve personally seen iPhones dropped from higher than 5 feet, land right on the screen and not seen any damage to the screen itself. There was also a podcast done by systm demonstrating how resilient the phone is. I’m calling bullshit too. Just another sucker trying to get traffic on his forum. buried as lame.

Takuro: He didn’t exactly take a very clear picture of the finished project. I’m sure if he did, you’d see how crappy it looks.

Coloring the plastic with a Sharpee??? Ugh. You might as well rip off the entire LCD panel and draw a home screen in crayon.

Mapper99: Ugly all right!

Here are some more fun iPhone stories and hacks:

http://iphone.corank.com

BingeBoy: Tell Kevin to do this.

Treoinmypocket: I have owned a Treo 650 for two years. It has a glass screen. Right after I got it I bought some plastic grippy applique’s for the side and back because the thing slipped out of my hand 3X in the 1st 10 minutes. There was an included screen applique (held on by static not glue) that has prevented any scratches.

I am sure you can get these for the iPhone as well – I would highly recommend the screen applique.

nugx: Yes, I am sure that piece of glass on your expensive ass phone just ‘broke’ randomly in your pocket during class. Were you in Opera class? Did she hit the ‘High F’? Or maybe it was the brown note because it smells like youre fulla shit…

dasdef: id be more concerned with the shards of glass 2mm from my penis head.

Mikey9oo: This is so stupid. I have had an iphone since launch day and the screen is beyond resilient. This guy is obviously a dick. “I pulled this out of my pocket after class,” YEAH FUCKING RIGHT. It just casually broke? He must have done something very stupid.

This is not a known issue, and his repair looks awful.

swook: My iPhone strike me as rather robust. The Anodized aluminum is hardy and the glass seems tough. In the past week I fell off of my bike while making a call (stupid, I know) and tonight it vibrated off of my amp onto a concrete floor during rehearsal. No probs. It is actually more scratch resistant than my 5G iPod, and due to it’s lack of moving parts, sturdier than the Sony w810 it replaced.

Seriously, it only has the APPEARANCE of fragility, a product of elegant design, I suppose.

rhett: goo-gone, razor blades, glass, dremel tool… he’s assuming the reader has all of these things already. What exactly did he spend $5 on? That stuff would cost me more than $5.

R75700: If i’m going to spend 500 or more on an Iphone, not only am I not going to break or let a single scratch find its way onto the screen…i’m 100% for sure not going to replace it with plastic and color it with a marker.

its an iphone not my second grade science project.

And PS replacing it takes 5 minutes…hours of cutting glass off the outside well exceeds five minutes hahah

How to fix iphone screen in 2 hours and 5 minutes

Dhalgren: Could this look any shittier?

crossmr: “With so many people breaking their iPhone screens.”…
yeah I know what you mean, just this morning I saw a bunch of people just wailing on theirs with a hammer. like 20-30, just crossing the street to the train…
