Apple (AAPL) Hits 52 Week High

September 25, 2007

xistboiClosing today at over $153.00 Apple has hit it’s 52 week high – all for no reason. Performing at over 74.8% year to date could the next stop be $200?[...] Thanks to xistboi for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

DONT1: wow

DONT1: good news

iota: 155.00 isn’t just the 52 week high for AAPL, it’s the all-time high.

jojofreak: i love owning this stock!!

openthinker: boought at 1 cent so all you blow me. Nah nah. :P

jeffreyf: Apple hardware’s adoption rate in tech capitals is fairly high; I’d say over 50%. If that’s any indication of the future, the stock is fairly cheap.

max1574: I guess when he said “for no reason” he meant that no new products or extreme interent hype were pushing it forward.

Anyways, glad I bought them at $70!

Now lets not fuck it up apple! k?

fLUx1337: bah meh blah couldn’t care less, aslong as they keep their products to good and better than the rest, they will get my money.

As soon as they start fucking about with me, thats when I stop giving them my money….

BlackJackJester: congratulations…should we all digg an article every time a company hits a 52wk high? Guess what else? Cisco hit its 52 week high of $33 today also, and Cisco > apple. I don’t think apple does $100 million in sales every day. Cisco does.

.Steven: 52 Weeks = Year?

twit987: Buried for “no reason” comment.

danceparty: bought at $83. “for no reason” heh…dumbass.

CPeanutG: Bought in at $20

vertinox: I had a dream last night that Steve Jobs got cancer again but this time he died and there was a panic at the market. And then my AAPL shares went to $30 again.

comptr: damm shouldve not sold my apple stock time to buy back some apple stock.

Inmate files lawsuit claiming O.J. Simpson is “hitman” for Steve Jobs

September 25, 2007

lnfiniteLoopA South Carolina inmate notorious for filing frivolous and fanciful lawsuits against public figures has used his latest complaint to accuse Apple chief executive Steve Jobs of employing O.J. Simpson as a “hitman” for the past two decades, in addition a litany of other outlandish offenses.[...] Thanks to lnfiniteLoop for providing this nice story on Digg.

xenonline: WTF?

metalica77: Did he get sold a DOA Ipod or something?

da5id: I knew it!

Gabberwok: This is the most rational thing I’ve seen on Digg today…

Cherubim: Jobs is using “the juice” to squeeze the competition ?

opticburger: “Several weeks ago, he filed suit against Elvis Presley and Neverland Ranch for, inter alia, ‘WAR CRIMES Rock N Rollin My Brain’,” the Judge wrote.

Sounds like something out of The Onion.

caryw: How the hell did this make it to the front page of digg? Just because it mentions Steve Jobs? This kind of crap happens every day without anyone paying notice, and rightfully so.

None of us are any better after reading this garbage. Buried, please do the same.

toastgodsupreme: Your taxes at work…

HideoKojima: I heard that Steve Blowjobs paid him with his ass.

EdwardoTheGreat: And yet Gates isn’t dead.

madstringer: His Wikipedia entry is the funniest that I have ever read. Having a bad day? Read It!

Leopard In Release Cantidate Cycle

September 25, 2007

longofestWith only two known issues remaining, MacRumors sources are indicating that Leopard is in the release candidate stage of development. Release Candidates are typically chosen amongst builds that have no known major issues and little to no known minor issues.[...] Thanks to longofest for providing this nice story on Digg.

hope that Leopard doesn’t go the way of iLife 08. iMovie nerfed, iPhoto made more confusing (events and cover flow? Come on.) A myriad of other features nobody cares much about.
The “coverflowification” of Apple products is a virus. It’s style over substance to the nth degree. I’ll buy Leopard for “Time Machine”, but I fear everything that will “come with.”

tomis: That title is about as ready for release as Leopard is. From what I’ve seen of 10.5 I was hoping Apple would delay it another 6 months. Otherwise I’ll be watching the updates and either wait ‘tll the DVDs are shipping with 10.5.3 or so, or just wait for 10.6

F4d3d: Free Leopard Upgrade?
I JUST bought a MacBook Pro, and I’m wondering if Apple usually offers a free upgrade to a new version of OS X for those who have recently purchased a computer with the old OS. Any thoughts?
Cheers!

Thanks for making computers fun again Apple

I’ve used it – and it’s going to be worth the wait!, 15 Aug 2007
By David Hughes “Nikonusa” (Bristol, UK) – See all my reviews

I’ve been using the pre-release builds of Panther for some months. As one of many, my role has been to use it day to day and report back and operational deficiencies (okay, bugs) and inconsistent behaviour. I’m pleased to say I’ve only had call do so twice, both for minor issues. The version that I have doesn’t boast all of the headlining features offered in the sneak previews (no Time Machine, no Spaces) but nonetheless it’s worth every penny when you come to upgrade. If you want to upgrade to the equivalent Vista product you’ll pay four times as much and still end up with an inferior solution. Don’t be afraid to pre order – this is going to be a very robust product from day one

chrysalis: If I buy an iMac now, will I have to pay again for Leopard in a few weeks, when it will be released?
Or will Apple give Leopard to people who just bought a new computer?

80hd: seeing neglect for spelling is like getting poked in the ribs to some….

toetagger: My dick just moved.

bingobongony: IS that Release Cantidate as in “We CAN’T release this crap?”

ericdano: Tori KANT SPELL

itsmedamon: buried for the typo.

“rant rant idiots rant rant get a brain morans rant rant”

WonderSwan: Does anyone know if, for Leopard, Apple has fixed the ridiculously sloppy folder background color bug for Intel Macs (i.e. user selects a color but it changes next time the folder is opened)?

antitab: No res independence? :(

This was a waste of time – just got to the Apple site to see it with descriptions better than crap like “Safari’s default bookmarks include a number of new ones in the Popular folder.” (Amazon, MonsterJobs, etc..) Those stupid default folders are for people who still have AOL accounts…hotmail too for that matter. They are what I always delete first when I zero-out my macs and start from scratch.

onefellswoop: Here’s my question, which I’m surprised I’ve never seen anyone else ask:

Won’t time machine make it impossible to erase your porn after you’re done with it? Will your trail forever be dirty? Or are you able to erase things from Time Machine too?

I also wonder, what happens when you run out of hard drive space? I know that it uses an external hard drive (…right?), but those are still subject to limitation. Does it then start erasing the oldest stuff, or what?

TheNik: I’m excited that you can modify grid size, but that’s just me. :P

Leopard should be sweet-ass. :D

nycmac247: I use Leopard every day and love it.
Time machine is wonderful and the iCal Server will be the best thing Apple has ever done … until Final Cut Server ships…

onefellswoop: Am I the only one who doesn’t understand how braille will work on a computer?

cctoronto05: I don’t like the folders… kind of reminds me of M$…

bborofka: Can we finally resize images with Preview now?

sg7791: I miss OS 9.

Wilddigi: Apple is going to pull a Microsoft

Hydraulix: Are they ever going to upgrade the terminal? It’s long overdue for an upgrade.

NoNamesLeft: I really think they’ve fucked up the UI with Leopard, I don’t like the dark menus and transparent menu bar. Also, what’s with the blue folder icons? They look like something IBM would use. I run OS X every day yet every day i am losing hope in Apple’s future direction – I used to love them now I just put up with them because it’s better than Windows and runs BBEdit and CS3. Stop snatching developers for the stupid iPhone and iPod Touch Apple and get back to doing what you do best, computers!

cave: The aqua scroll bar doesn’t fit in at all with the rest of the Leopard theme. I thought they would have changed it by now.

Let Apple know that you want 3rd party apps!

September 25, 2007

onezero2000iPhone users that like the 3rd party applications that are being developed have to communicate their unhappiness with Apple, otherwise they will continue on this course. If users flood them with requests to work with the community, they will have to.[...] Thanks to onezero2000 for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

dluv: Hey retards, Apple already knows you want 3rd party apps. Get a life and realize they don’t care. Leave them the fuck alone to make another overpriced gizmo to keep that stock riding high! If you’ve seen, they could give a shit as long as the product works and nerds keep buying higher memory versions. Except for the stupidest rebranding on earth, the red AIDS ipods, they don’t Microsoft themselves out by rebranding different types of the same product for suckers. Hence they don’t need to spend the time. Plus that whole exclusivity deal makes them not care.

sophia269: I think every one wants Apple to add 3rd party apps! as i want this.

MistySteele: OR, we could, umm, let the market decide. OpenMoko anyone?

rotorhead47: Yeah thats right Apple will have to do what we say, or else we will hit Alt-del-F3-Ctl-backspace-## on our half-assed linux rig and then really show them we mean business, and by mean business, I mean hold off on purchasing that 10th iPOD. Yeah I bet apple is quaking in their corporate offices since they wont share code to the potentially biggest selling consuer product ever, so a few geeks can make a lame version of sodoku for iPHONE.

srodolff: How about letting Apple know that Apple hardware is too expensive. It is a hellava lot more helpful than 3rd party apps.

ChrisTots: wow, how original:
http://www.digg.com/apple/Can_Digg_save_the_iPod_T …

pradador: The only way to make a point is by not buying the iPhone in the first place. It makes no sense to buy the iPhone knowing full well Apple’s stance on 3rd party apps and then act as if they are doing something wrong. Apple wants your money, that’s it. By buying the phone you lose the only leverage you have against companies like this.

The right way to do this is have people who want 3rd party apps NOT buy the iPhone so that the lack of sales drives Apple to change their model.

Jeezoflip: i think people hacking the iPhone and making apps for it is pretty clear enough sign that we want 3rd party apps. They still wont do it.

LogicAJV: Apple is doing something really crazy. They say you are leasing the iphone, but you have to pay 400-600 dollars for it. I know don’t know about you, but leases have 2 requirements. One they loan you the equipment. The second you pay a fee to use the service and if the service doesn’t function, the company has to replace the equipment free of charge.

The iphone can’t be both, an electrionic purchased item and a leased item. You can’t pay for a service and also have to pay for the equipment to use the service. Then have them tell you how you can use the equipment you just bought. iphones need to either be rented or bought but not both. I don’t think iphones come with a lifetime warrenty, therefore, I bought the iphone and I can use it how I want. Apple therefore has no right to tell people how they can use, unlock, use it as spare parts, etc. their iphones.

ivorylion: Is anyone here under the impression that Apple isn’t aware that users want and will support the development of 3rd party applications? I don’t think they are holding out for a few people to send e-mail asking for them to be legitimized. For that matter, I don’t think they care if 100k people send e-mail asking for them, if they don’t want to release their products for development, then just deal with it.

xombi242: I want a fuctional calender. If there is a virtual keyboard, it should be a given feature! That seems to be my current complaint as I just got it today in the mail. I just want to be able to jot down notes and other things. It would be nice. If I have to go to a 3rd party app to get what I want, why can’t I?

toetagger: The iPhone is a phone that does a few other things too. Jobs keeps saying the iPhone is not a computer because they will release a pocket computer- a PDA- next year… they might even call it the Newton. AAPL 250.00 ‘08.

cipher64: Sooner or later people will have to realise that Apple is just another big corporation trying to make a big buck, obviously they care more about making money than anything else. Otherwise they would have been a small time business with a few hardcore fans, but they are in the mainstream and they have to play the game by the rules that every other big corp. follows. And playing that game you might not always do things that are fair and best for the customers, sometimes you just have to care about your own interests. That’s the plain truth in my opinion.

woodsk7: I think the facebook app is a good example of apps that can be created through the current system. I think eventually Apple will load the phone will all the necessary applications…Because in general, most apps are useless.

Anyway. Check out my app that displays what is currently playing on the radio in the major US cities.

http://www.timbergeron.com/current/

thewump: If people were not hacking phones to use on different networks this would not be an issue. These iPhone hacks are affecting apples current and future biz-dev deals, and I can completely understand them taking action.

Analyst, iPhone Dev Team disagree on impact of iPhone warning

September 25, 2007

1KrazyKoreanCommenting on Apple’s statement Monday about unlocked iPhones, American Technology analyst Shaw Wu said the matter is likely to impact only a small percentage of iPhone customers, namely “hackers.” Representatives for the unofficial iPhone Dev Team, however, disagree.[...] Thanks to 1KrazyKorean for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

indiefan: I’m going to go with the dev team on this one. I know people running installer that i would hardly consider “hackers”. It’s just so easy, and the promise of NES/instant messenger is incentive enough.

centerblack: IMO, Apples statement was simply a heads up. I don’t expect Apple to spend time/money getting their firmware updates to run correctly on my modified phone. I’m assuming that they loaded 1.1.1 onto an unlocked phone and found that it didn’t work. I doubt anyone spent more time than that.

This has always been Apples stance. If you’re going to play with private/unsupported parts of their system, that’s fine, but they can’t guarantee that the hack will continue working through updates. It’s the same for the iPhone as it is for OS X developers… IMO the response to their statement has been overly critical.

You also have to understand that Apple is justifying continued development on iPhone software with the profits they’re getting from ATT kickbacks. They really shouldn’t be expected to figure out how to load firmware updates onto modded phones that aren’t supporting continued development.

Apple isn’t bricking phones. I’m sick of people crying about this. You have to plug your phone into iTunes and tell it to update before anything is going to be loaded onto your phone. Would it be nice if iTunes let you flash your phone back to factory? Sure, but Apple isn’t in a position to implement that. The BEST they can do is make it known that their update is going to break your phone so that the people who developed the unlock can come up with a process to return the phone to factory status.

kkiran: Hmmm, after seeing Hacker’s grip on the core OS of the iPhone, installing just the iTunes Store on the iPhone without an update to the firmware is more than a possibility!! Apple is good, remember how they accepted Apple TV hacks??Steve Jobs himself was an AT&T hacker and he cleverly exposed iPhone’s internals. If he wants, he could easily lock our phones out via iTunes but he din’t and infact, he is using the custom Apps on his iPhone too!! Its just that AT&T is playing spoilsport – nonetheless, I bet Apple won’t force bricking our costliest phone(??) released exclusively in America!! Long live iPhone Devs & Apple :)

jackman3: Apple can’t not legally brick iPhones anyway since the DMCA allows users to modify their cell phones to switch service providers.

aerogant: It’s apples choice really, but they should have added itunes first before doing something about unlocked phones. The reason is that people who don’t want to change carriers or can’t use the carrier they pick, will not be buying music or videos from their store. I have never owned an ipod, and when I heard the iphone was unlocked I started buying more music and videos from itunes to put it on the phone, it would have been nice to be able to do that directly on the phone :P .

iPhone dev team disputes Apple FUD with bold statement about unlocking

September 25, 2007

superpixelA spokesman for the iPhone Dev Team, the group that developed the iPhone unlock has issued a statement condemning Apple and promising a tool in the next week which will restore your iPhone to a factory-fresh state. The unlock, he writes, made the iPhone free and useful world-wide, not just in certain countries. Read the full statement at tuaw.com[...] Thanks to superpixel for providing this nice story on Digg.

What other users say about this:

moisie: Just because you buy something and it’s technically capable of being made to do something doesn’t mean the manufacturer has to actively support it or make efforts to not disrupt your practices.

Some people are arguing that modifying the software shouldn’t have an effect on the hardware warranty but it’s possible that modifying some of the software could alter how the hardware runs and cause the hardware to break.

I

gjmacd: maybe Im missing something, but is running Installer.App (AppTap) considered “unlocking” the phone?

stabilo66: This one worked for me on T-Mobile !!

http://iphone.h18.ru/

returnofthemac: you are correct zeroMPHfallover, a web app is not an app. I was pissed about it. I still am pissed especially with this bullshit about bricking phones. I am not apologizing for Apple.

HOWEVER. People everywhere are all like “Apple likes money! WAAHH”. I like money too. So do you. He’s a fucking CEO. I do not agree with the people who are like “steve jobs is god”. Steve Jobs is just a very slick salesmen for very slick products that in my experience, just work better for me. So with all this considered..

Stop whining about something that **might break** something that you “broke” in order to get it to do what you want it to do. If you installed 3rd party apps, uninstall them and restore before you update. If you were daring enough to unlock it for t-mobile.. accept the consequences. You knew what you were doing. You bought it with no 3rd party support at all and there was no promise of native apps at the time.

This week, before you update just wait for the pro’s to spoon feed you a new way around it. It’s what we’ve all done so far so stop crying.

AzMegladon: Apple Fans -vs- Apple , kewl : )

zflow: LOL, that has to suck, and I was getting close to buying one… guess it’s the PSP firmware cat and mouse game all over again…

fuxjoey: What a quick response & slap Apple in the face.

uberfu: people are forgetting one thing:

Regardless of whether Apple wants to bow to the pressure of the masses or not [like they sometimes have] – they are under contractual obligation with AT&T for 5 years – remember the Exclusivity Agreement they both bragged about for months ?

Yeah – well Apple has to build that little “bug” the Dev Team mentions into their product or AT&T could slap them with a breach of contract action_ So odds are better than not this will continue thru the end of their committment_ With the exception that Apple as of late has had the tarck record of kicking over ant hills – so we’ll see_

Maybe in 2012 this will be less of an issue_

This is no different than the DRM issue with iTunes_

What I find interesting is that you buy an iPhone and commit to a 2 year agreement with AT&T [aside from any hacking] – AT&T and Apple have a 5 year agreement – so what happens at the end of 2-years if you want to move to another carrier and your contract is up ? Wouldn’t they be obligated to allow you to then use any carrier you want and they’d have to allow for support when migrating to another carrieer ?

It is going to get real interesting over the next year and a half_

digitallysick: Its just a way to keep you from unlocking the iphone, to keep at&t happy, and money in apples pocket.

pop1: “several hundred thousand people have unlocked their iPhones”

Wait. That doesn’t add up. If Apple just recently sold the 1 millionth unit of the iPhone, and several hundred thousand people have unlocked theirs, that means a sizable percent of the sales didn’t convert to AT&T subscribers.

I don’t think that’s the case.

Other than that, all power to iPhone unlockers. I hope Apple realizes it would have made a lot more money if it hadn’t locked the iPhone to AT&T and instead positioned the iPhone as a programmable device (and without needing to drop the price). I wonder how many more millions of units it would have sold by now…

Swift2: They’re not saying you will brick your iPhone by updating it, they’re saying you might, and they can’t be held responsible. In other words, buy an iPhone, use it according to the agreement, and if it bricks you’ll get a new one, or free repairs for as long as your warranty goes. If you screw around with it, you’re breaking the agreement, and there’s no warranty. Plus, when they want to do something like, say, the Wireless iTunes store, or whatever, if you take a hacked phone and try to get the update, they’re not guaranteeing that it won’t brick it. To unlock the phone, you have to change the firmware and the modem code. Why should Apple test updates so that it won’t break your hack?

“To live outside the law, you must be honest.”

btswrkng: You know, tuaw.com wasn’t all that great back when it was a blog about Apple, Inc. and its products. But now that it’s morphed into being a blog almost entirely devoted to iPHONE UNLOCKING and iPOD TOUCH JAILBREAKS and all that crap I’ve removed it from my RSS feed. SO BORING.

jacbop: Apple will probably start offering “software resets” at the Genius Bar for $75 a pop. It violates the warranty, but they can make money resetting people’s phones.

K00q33m0nsta: Isn’t it LAW (DMCA) that states all Cellular service providers (AT&T, T-mobile, Verizon, etc..) in the U.S. have to unlock their mobile handsets? Can someone tell me how AT&T and Apple are not getting sued right now?
If they (apple and at&t) just followed the law that was placed, none of this bullshit would be going on right now. Consumers (regular and apple fan boys alike) wouldn’t be getting screwed.

Singee15: The best part of that article (in true programmer style):
“The text of the statement, with modifications for grammar and spelling, follows after the break.”
